The Jackson Pond bridge project on Hwy. 55 should be complete by mid-July, according to Alabama Department of Transportation officials.

“The bridge is basically complete,” ALDOT District Manager Bill Wofford said. “The contractor is working on the road way and the bridge railing, and guard rail must be completed.”

The bridge, located in Lockhart, was closed effective Nov. 10.

The project is an estimated $1.84 million project, and for months, travelers have been forced to take an alternate routes.

The official detour north goes from Florala up Hwy. 331 to Opp and across Hwy. 84 to Andalusia, and is the opposite when traveling south.

Local travelers have been using Still Pond Road as a detour, which brought the traffic count on the 3.7 mile, narrow road from 120 cars per day to some 2,400 cars per day, according to Star-News records.
