APL summer program boasts average of 200 children

More than 150 children attended the final summer reading program at Andalusia Public Library on Thursday, APL children’s Librarian Caryl Lee Ray said.

Thursday’s program was TomFoolery, also known as Tom Rayburn.

“We’ve been averaging about 200 children,” she said. “And it’s growing by the week.”

Ray said that last year numbers for the program were down and that she ranged from 125-150 children.

“I’m excited about this year,” she said. “A lot of our business have donated door prizes, which are great for our children. I appreciate them so much.”

This year’s program is themed “Super Hero,” and Ray said they have had a lot of circulation from sixth and seventh graders who have a summer reading list.

Additionally, a lot of children elect to come for pre-show and check out books to read.

Ray said that art, photography and Lego contest entries have been slow to be submitted.

Art contest entries are due by July 13. The age categories are 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12.

The teen photography contest entries are due by July 31 and may be black and white or color and up to 8 by 10. The age group is 13-18.

Lego Construction Contest entries are due by July 17.

Participants must use a minimum of 50 pieces. There are two age categories, 6-9 and 10-14.
