Opp police officers and a Covington County Sheriff’s deputy were involved in a shooting at the intersection of Highway 84 West and Leon Wiggins Road Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Opp Police Chief Mike McDonald confirmed the shooting took place.

“All I can say at this time is that Opp police officers and a Covington County Sheriff’s deputy were involved in a shooting at the intersection of Highway 84 West in Opp,” McDonald said. “The officer at this time is reported as uninjured and unhurt. One subject was injured and transported (via air ambulance) to a local medical facility.”

McDonald said the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is in charge of the investigation.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Spokesperson Kevin Cook told the Star-News that McDonald has requested the SBI investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday afternoon.

“Upon completion of the investigation, SBI will forward its findings to the District Attorney for review,” he said.

Cook said nothing further was available as the investigation is ongoing.

The Star-News will update as more information becomes available.
