Because of Andalusia’s size and its quality standard of living, the owners of Hummingbird Landing thought it was the best place for a new 56-unit apartment complex for people aged 55 and over.

Hummingbird Landing Owner Jerry Braden said construction on the complex, which is located off of Moore Road, started in April.

“It’s 56 units of one and two bedrooms,” Braden said. “It’s mostly two bedrooms. There may be one unit with one bedroom only. The rest of them are twos.”

Spread out in three separate buildings, the rooms will be spread out across two stories. Each building will have two elevators.

In the middle of the complex will be a 2,000-square foot clubhouse.

Braden said the complex won’t be finished until late spring of 2016.

“They look like they’re going real fast to start with, but it just takes a long time,” he said. “These are nice units. I would say late spring of next year is when they’re going to come online.”

Braden said most seniors do qualify to live in the apartments.

“We find most seniors qualify as far as the income goes, and there’s no rent assistance,” he said. “The rents are in the $350-$400 range. They’re not terribly expensive.”

The apartment complex is for independent living, Braden said.

“Folks have to be able to take care of themselves, even though it is 55 and over and most of the tenants are in the older range of 70 and up,” he said. “Every market is different. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

Braden’s company, Hummingbird Landing LP, centers around building complexes in rural areas with good towns.

Braden owns 56 apartment complexes similar to Andalusia’s. Hummingbird has built complexes in Monroeville and Enterprise.

Braden said construction financing for the project here is through Regions Bank.

“We get tax credits from the Alabama Housing Finance Authority,” he said. “Regions will be buying those tax credits from the authority.

“This is something that’s really good for the community,” he said.
