Sponsors are still needed for sending World War II veterans to next month’s World War II veterans “Keep the Sprit of ’45 Alive” program.

The event will be held at the Air Force Armament Museum, 100 Museum Drive, Eglin Air Force Base, and will commemorate the 70th anniversary of World War II.

Locally, John Vick is organizing an effort to take World War II veterans to the event, which is set for Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Vick said he would like to charter a bus if enough World War II veterans are able to attend.

“We are still looking for sponsors for the bus,” he said. “We are hoping that we can get 10 businesses to donate $200 each. CCB Community Bank is the first. This is a great way for us to be able to honor our veterans.”

Covington Region Honor Flight has agreed to be the fiscal agent for the trip.

Anyone who wishes to make a donation may make checks payable to Covington County WWII Vet Celebration and mail them to Covington Region Honor Flight at PO Box 281 Andalusia, AL 36420

The event will begin at 10 a.m., with Reveille and the presentation of the colors.

Historical lectures conducted by prominent historians on the Doolittle Raiders, Eglin Field, WASP, authentic slide shows, patriotic dance routines by the famous Highsteppers, Doughnut Dollies, Big Band era music, photo booths, re-enactors, Rosie the Riveter, a full service World War II field kitchen, VA representatives and more will comprise the event.

Contributions for a second meal for the veterans are also being solicited.

Departure is expected to be from the Andalusia Area Chamber of Commerce at approximately 7:30 a.m. that morning.

World War II veterans who are interested in going to the event or those interested in making contributions should contact 222-2030.
