The Alabama Department of Transportation will start a widening and resurfacing project on Hwy 84 west of the junction of Highway 55 in River Falls to just near the junction of Choctaw Street in Andalusia today.

ALDOT Public Information Specialist Brantley Kirk said a reduced speed limit of 45 mph will be in effect throughout the construction zone.

Signs and striping will help guide motorists through the area. Those traveling on the road are encouraged to use caution when traveling through the construction zone, Kirk said.

The 4.3-mile project, which costs $2,778,099.41, was awarded to Wiregrass Construction Co., out of Dothan. Wiregrass Construction had the lowest bid that met the project requirements.

Wiregrass Construction Project Superintendent Teddy Watts said this project is slated to last 40 days.

Watts said 12,000 tons of surface will be laid on the highway. Additionally, 172 tons of widening will be performed.

At present, Wiregrass Construction is still working construction on the 14-mile Hwy 55 project, which runs from Andalusia to the Yellow River Bridge.

During construction, there may be temporary width restrictions for oversized loads during the project.
