Law enforcement authorities have confirmed that Sgt. Larry Smith of the Covington County Sheriff’s Department died in a motorcycle wreck on old U.S. 84 near the Opp Country Club early Wednesday night. The accident occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m.

According to the Opp Police Department, Smith, who lives in Andalusia, was driving a motorcycle when it left the roadway and struck a tree. Both he and his wife, Pam, were thrown from the vehicle.

Opp Fire Department and ambulance personnel conducted first aid at the scene, and both victims were transferred to the Mizell Memorial Hospital.  Smith died as a result of the injuries. Mrs. Smith was treated and released at Mizell Memorial Hospital.

He also was a former employee of the Opp Police Department.
