Members of the Covington County VIP Lions Club met on the Court Square Thursday to raise awareness for blind and low vision.

Approximately 10 members gathered at the Surly Mermaid and walked with their white canes around the Square.

Wanda Sasser-Scroggins said Thursday the group wanted to bring awareness of blind and low vision to the community.

The white cane in American society, is synonymous with a blind person’s ability to come and go on his own.

White Cane Day is also a reminder for motorists to yield to pedestrians using a white cane or guide dog, which is required by law.

The mission of White Cane Day is to educate the world about blindness and how the blind and visually impaired can live and work independently while giving back to their communities, to celebrate the abilities and successes achieved by blind people in a sighted world and to honor the many contributions being made by the blind and visually impaired.

The group is active in the community and recently participated in the Extreme Experience Retreat at Blue Lake Methodist Camp.

The National Federation of the Blind in 1963 asked governors in the 50 states to proclaim Oct. 15 of each year White Cane Safety Day.
