Qualifying begins for ‘16 elections

Qualifying has begun for the 2016 Republican primary, and continues until 5 p.m. on Fri., Nov. 6, 2015, GOP Chairman William Blocker said.

The primary is set for Tues., March 1.

To qualify for election, Blocker said candidates must complete a Declaration of Candidacy form and simultaneously pay qualifying fees.

The offices on the 2016 ballot and qualifying fees are:

• Covington County Board of Education, Place 3 (incumbent Linda Powell) and Place 4 (incumbent Jeff Bailey). Fees are $100.

• Covington County District Commissioners. All four seats are open. Incumbents are Kenneth Northey (District 1, Opp); Joe Barton (District 2, Andalusia); Harold Elmore (District 3, Florala); and Carl Turman (District 4, Red Level).

Candidates must live in the district in which they run, but are voted on by entire county. Qualifying fees are $450.

• Covington County Commission Chairman (Incumbent Bill Godwin). Qualifying fees are $600.

Also on the ballot are district attorney (incumbent Walt Merrill), district judge (incumbent Julie Moody), and circuit judge (incumbent Ashley McKathan). Candidates for these offices much qualify with the state party.
