Lady Wildcats outlast Red Level in overtime

The Florala Lady Wildcats battled from behind and held off the Red Level Lady Tigers in overtime for a 41-36 win Tuesday night in Red Level.

Red Level got off to a quick start when Deonna Harris found Hannah Colvin streaking to the basket, and Colvin finished it with a layup.

Maecy Shipp increased the lead to 5-0 with a jumper of the glass. Following a technical foul from Florala Colvin made the score 6-0 with a free throw.

Natalie Feagin then got a steal and drove the length of the court for a layup to give the Lady Tigers an 8-0 advantage.

One free throw from Colvin and Feagin gave Red Level a 10-2 lead at the end of the first period.

Florala got free throws from Jakiyah Griffin and Angel Maxey cut the lead down to 10-4, but a jumper from the top of the key from Feagin stretched the lead back to 12-4.

The Lady Wildcats responded with five-straight points from Morgan Jackson to make the score 12-9.

Griffin then cut the Lady Tigers lead down to 14-11 with a jumper just before halftime.

The Lady Tigers got the third period started with a Harris converting an old-fashioned 3-point play to give Red Level at 17-11 lead.

Red Level went up 19-12 when Feagin dropped in a layup.

Jackson cut the lead to down to five points and free throws from Griffin and Maxey cut the Red Level lead down to three points heading into the fourth.

Florala worked quickly to begin the fourth period and knotted the game up 22-22 after a free throw from Riley Edwards.

Feagin go the lead back for the Lady Tigers with a free throw with 5:40 left in the game. Another layup from Feagin put Red Level up 24-22.

Edwards cut the lead back down to one with a free throw and after a miss on the second Jackson got the offensive rebound and the put back to give Florala a 25-23 lead.

A quick basket from Jayla Poindexter gave the lead back to the Lady Tigers with 3:32 left in the game.

One free throw from Edwards and then a pair of free throws from Jackson gave Florala the lead back as time was winding down.

Red Level tied the game back up, but a shot from Griffin with 14 seconds left put Florala up 32-30.

Red Level got one more chance and Amie Catrett was fouled as she went up for a shot and was sent to the line for two shots with just 4 seconds left on the clock. Catrett sank both free throws to send the game into overtime.

The Lady Wildcats came out strong in overtime and seven-straight points from Jackson helped the Lady Wildcats to a 41-36 win.

“The girls did a great job of fighting back and never giving up,” Florala coach Troy Stewart said. “We had a girl injured that couldn’t play, but the other girls stepped up and did a great job, and Morgan Jackson got hot there at the end to help us get the win in overtime. I’m very proud of them.”

Jackson led the Lady Wildcats with 24 points.

Feagin led the Lady Tigers with 18 points.

“We played hard and we started out strong, but we just couldn’t sustain it,” Red Level coach Allen Catrett said. “I saw some good things and I wish the outcome would have been different, but we will learn from this.”
