Florala looks to build off last season

The Florala Wildcats’ boys varsity basketball teams has started off 0-5, but head coach Troy Stewart likes what he has seen so far.

“We are building on what we learned last year,” Stewart said. “We want to continue to focus on us and keep building off what we learned last season. Right now, we look like a different team than we did last year. We are continuing to fight in the fourth period even after getting down.”

Stewart said the Wildcats recently competed in Boaz against a few bigger schools, and despite losing both games, he felt it was big confidence booster.

“We went up there and competed with those bigger schools,” Stewart said. “Even though we didn’t win, it was an eye opener of our players to see that we can compete with these types of teams.”

The biggest thing that the Wildcats have going for them is their teamwork, Stewart said.

“Our strong suit is our team work,” Stewart said. “We people scout us, they aren’t going to find any all-stars, but our strong suit is playing as a team and not as individuals. We are going to a different leading scorer nearly every single game. I’m not worried about who is scoring the points, as long as we are taking good shots and getting better.”

Stewart said that his expectations for the Wildcats are to just improve.

“Keep learning from last year and not make those same mistakes again,” Stewart said.

The Wildcats will be back in on Tues., at home against Samson.
