Construction for a major sidewalk project on the west side of Andalusia is expected to begin in January, after the city council awarded the bid to Alabama Road Contracting Services, LLC, a local company.

Engineer Jeremy McMath of Civil Southeast Engineering recommended the council accept the company’s bid, the lowest of six submitted. Bids ranged from Alabama Road Contracting Services’ low of $398,960, to Geisler Contracting’s high of $572,880.

The city received a grant through the Alabama Department of Transportation for the project, which will extend a sidewalk from Dunson Street down Prestwood Bridge Road to Cedar Road, and extends the Church Street sidewalk to Snowden Drive. An alternative in the bid, which is included in the price, takes the Prestwood Bridge Road sidewalk from Cedar Drive to Rosewood Lane. Alternate B adds a sidewalk on Church Street between the bypass and Snowden Drive.

McMath said the focus will be on completing the base project first. If unforeseeable events don’t increase the projected cost of that project, Alternate A and Alternate B will be added at a later date.

The city’s portion of the project will be 20 percent.

McMath said the company has a portable concrete plant and will batching concrete on site for the project.
