An Opp Middle School student who made a false call to E-911 on Wednesday afternoon faces some serious consequences.

Opp Police Chief Mike McDonald said that around 1:33 p.m. Wednesday, the OPD was contacted by the E-911 Center and advised that someone called from OMS and stated to get the cops to the school fast.

“Several OPD units responded to the middle school and resultant to their investigation, a student was detained for making the call,” he said.

The case has been referred to the Department of Youth Services and charges are pending, McDonald said.

Opp City Schools Superintendent Michael Smithart said that a couple of students thought it would be funny to have one make a prank call to 911.

“I believe the humor soon gave way to another emotion when a student was placed in handcuffs and taken into custody,” Smithart said. “We appreciate the prompt response of the of the Opp Police Department.”

Smithart said it is important to remember that these officers don’t know what they are about to walk into when they receive a call like this.

“They have to expect the worst and act accordingly,” he said. “That is why foolishness like this will not be tolerated in our schools and the student will face the consequences from both DYS and a full disciplinary hearing from our system.”
