The Covington County Commission has an unexpected task before it, as county engineer Darren Capps has announced he will retire effective May 1.

Commission Chairman Bill Godwin said Wednesday that Capps is on spring break, but submitted retirement papers this week.

In 2012, the outgoing county commission approved a contract between the county and Capps that secured his job until 2017.
