The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution honored seven on Monday.

Six students were honored with the DAR’s Good Citizens medals, while John Givhan was honored with the chapter’s first-ever Distinguished Citizen Medal.

The annual award for Good Citizens recognizes and rewards high school seniors who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities.

Those honored were:

• Taran Carrasco, Andalusia High School.

• Avery McNeill, Florala High School.

• Mallory Kelley, Opp High School.

• Sami Stamnes, Pleasant Home School.

• Katelyn Vickery, Red Level High School.

• Aneissa Coursey, Straughn High School.

Sue Bass Wilson presented Givhan with his award.

Wilson said Givhan has helped so many people.

“He was the one who stood out the most to us,” she said of choosing a recipient.

Givhan, who wounded in action in 1964, said he co-pilot told him he was going to make it and the holy spirit told him he was letting him go home so he could help others.

Givhan said he saluted the seniors, but gave them advice for the future.

“Things change rapidly after you graduate,” he said. “Be ready for it.”

Givhan said he had every reason to believe those honored would face their challenges.

The DAR Distinguished Citizen Medal was introduced in 2013 to recognize individuals, 18 years of age and older, who fulfill the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership and patriotism.
