Florala woman’s accomplice dead in apparent shootout

A suspect in a Bowling Green, Ky., bank robbery in which a Florala woman is charged was found dead in Tennessee.

Law enforcement had been searching the Cottontown area for a man who fled on foot from a van that officers said was used as the getaway vehicle in the robbery Tuesday morning of Citizens First Bank on Campbell Lane in Bowling Green.

0615-Colleen+Sue+WatkinsThe driver of the van, 53-year-old Colleen Sue Watkins, of Florala, Ala., was taken into custody. She was charged with first-degree robbery and has been returned to Kentucky, the Bowling Green Daily News reported.

Sumner County (Tenn.) Sheriff Sonny Weatherford said a neighbor called police about 5 p.m. Wednesday when she went to a home and found the homeowner, a truck driver, dead. Investigators later discovered the second body.

The suspect allegedly had broken a door window to get inside the home. It is believed that a gun battle ensued when the homeowner, a truck driver, got home, he said.
