There were a pile of Covington County natives on hand Saturday in Montgomery as they traveled to support the former Bulldogs Montel Lee, Johnathon Johnson and the Ferrum Panthers take on former Opp Bobcat Brandon Williams and the Huntingdon Hawks.

In their homecoming game, the Hawks topped Ferrum 48-27.

Former Opp Bobcat Brandon Williams got the start at linebacker for the Hawks, and former Andalusia Bulldogs Montel Lee and Johnathon Johnson each started on Panthers’ defensive front.

“It’s really cool playing this close to home,” Lee said. “I want to thank everyone that made the trip up here to watch us.”

Johnson was also excited that friends and family got the chance to come to Saturday’s game.

“I’m just excited to get out there and play in front this Andalusia crowd,” Johnson said. “I want thank all of them for coming up.”

Johnson got the game started strong for the Panthers as he chased the Hawks’ quarterback out of the pocket and helped force a fumble that Ferrum recovered.

The Panthers began driving down the field, but Williams made a big stop on third down that forced a punt from Ferrum.

On the third-and-one plays, Williams shot into the backfield from his outside linebacker position where he met the Panther quarterback for a 6-yard loss.

The stop by Williams forced and punt from Ferrum and set up Huntingdon’s first scoring drive of the game.

Vic Jerald rushed in from 3 yards out to put the Hawks on top 7-0.

Ferrum answered back with a strong drive that ended with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Harvey Taylor to Chris Guy.

Huntingdon’s quarterback Luke Bailey then took over the contest and added two touchdown passes to give the Hawks a 21-7 lead in the first quarter.

Bailey tossed an 18-yard touchdown to Nick Haas to go up 14-7.

On the Hawks’s next drive, Bailey connected with Jerald for an 11-yard touchdown.

The Hawks started the second quarter with another strong drive, and Bailey capped it off with 41-yard touchdown to Diggen Andre to put Huntingdon on top 27-7.

A few drives later, Ferrum picked up their last score of the first half when Taylor hit Raushod Floyd for a 3-yard touchdown.

The extra-point attempt failed and Huntingdon lead 27-13 with 1:23 left before halftime.

There wasn’t much time left before halftime when the Hawks got the ball back, but the air-raid attack doesn’t require much time to score.

Bailey drove the Hawks down the field before hitting Otis Porter for a 25-yard touchdown to put Huntingdon up 34-13 at halftime.

The Hawks continued to pass the ball well in the second half and held off the Panthers for a 48-27 homecoming win.

Williams finished the game with eight total tackles for the Hawks, including two for a loss.

Johnson finished with two tackles and Lee added one for the Panthers.
