Members of the Covington County Quilters’ Guild are busy gearing up for their quilt show.

The guild holds a quilt show every few years and this year’s show has a theme: “My Blue Heaven.”

Organizer Jan Harbuck said this year’s event has a lot to offer.

“There are 41 in our guild,” she said. “We’ll have almost 200 quilts on display. We’ll also have wall hangings, a purse or two and a quilted jacket.”

There will be a bed turning ceremony by Sharon Hopkins, she said.

“They’ll get to see quilts from the past,” Harbuck said.

An American Quilt Society Appraiser – Alma Moates – from Pensacola will be on site.

“There are several reasons to get your quilt appraised,” Harbuck said. “One so you’ll know what it’s worth. Then, if you’re dividing up family property and also to insure it.”

Harbuck said those who wish to have a quilt appraised may fill out a form and Moates will be able to work them in.

“She does a very good job on appraisals,” Harbuck said.

There will be vendors, and a scissor and knife sharpener.

There will also be items for sale.

“This is a great way to buy your child’s teacher a gift or a co-worker,” she said. “There will be a lot of nice things at the boutique. You can get some Christmas shopping done while you’re there.”

The quilts will be judged.

This year’s challenge quilt will have to feature something blue, a circle and flying geese.

“They just got to take it from there and create what they wanted to,” she said.

There will also be a viewer’s choice category, as well.

Tickets are on sale now and will be available during the quilt show for several items.

  • A donation quilt in which all proceeds will go to Pilots for Christ. Tickets are $1 each.
  • A specially designed knife crafted by John Harbuck. Tickets are $1 each. Money will go to support the guild’s charitable projects such as comfort quilts that go in sheriff deputies’ and police cars. Harbuck said a child gets one if police picks them up. They also supply pillowcases for children in foster care and plan to supply them for domestic violence victims at the Bethesda House.
  • Drawings for 12 different baskets with a variety of themes including a Christmas basket, Thanksgiving basket, kitchen supplies, baby supplies, beverages, beach and a man basket. Harbuck said that Tickets are 25 for $5 and that those who purchase them may put all the tickets under on item or any other combination of their choice in hopes of winning the basket.

There will also be a silent auction.

The event will be held Fri., Nov. 4, and Sat., Nov. 5, at the Kiwanis Center.

Doors open at 9 a.m. each day.

Admission is $6 per person per day. Coupons are available around town for $1 off admission.
