Florala Police are investigating a potential interference with custody case revolving around a missing teen.

FPD Chief Sonny Bedsole said police are consulting with District Attorney Walt Merrell to make sure that the case meets the requirements for the interference.

Sixteen-year-old Ashlyn Joy has been missing since Saturday.

Bedsole said she is believed to be in the custody of her father.

“What we know or believe right now, her dad had something to do with having her picked up,” Bedsole said. “Right now, we can’t say that it is an interference with custody case, but we are getting an opinion from the district attorney’s office. As soon as the DA give us the OK, we will issue warrants.”

Bedsole said right now they are calling it an interference with custody case.

“The father says he has the child or had her picked up,” Bedsole said.

Ashlyn’s mother, Stacy Paplauskas, posted on social media that her daughter was in the custody of her father, Gary Brent Joey, who took her from Florala on Saturday.

“His last known address was Plainview, Ark.,” she said. “I do not know if he still resides there as he has not seen the children in 2.5 years.”
