Year-end donations: Wide range of charities offer local services

If you want to make charitable contributions before the calendar year ends, here is a list of some of the county’s charities:

  • Habitat for Humanity of Covington County, P.O. Box 1034, Andalusia, AL 36420. This charity combines sweat equity with contributions to help people of limited means earn homes of their own. The group completed its sixth house in early 2016, and has a seventh under way.
  • The Full Tummy Project of Covington County discreetly provides a bag of food on Fridays for children in Covington County who are at risk of hunger on the weekends. At present, they serve more than 200 students. Contributions can be mailed to P.O. Box 211, Andalusia, AL 36420.
  • Crossover Ministry, the eight-month addiction recovery program in Opp serving all of Covington County. Almost every crime committed in Covington County and in Alabama has a drug or alcohol connection. This group does important work.   • Wherever there is trouble in the world, the American Red Cross is there to help. Covington County Chapter of the American Red Cross, 234 Hillcrest Drive in Andalusia, AL, 36420.
  • Miracle League of Covington County provides recreational opportunities for physically challenged students to participate in youth sports. Contributions can be mailed to Miracle League of Covington County, P.O. Box 1971, Andalusia, AL 36420.
  • Meredith’s Miracles was created in 2005 in memory of Meredith Elizabeth McGlamory. The non-profit organization helps families with non-medical expenses when their children need out-of-town care. P.O. Box 643, Andalusia, AL 36420.
  • Similarly, the Megan Kelley Smiles Foundation provides assistance to families of older youth who need specialized care. The charity’s address is P.O. Box 1416, Andalusia, AL 36420.
  • The Lower Alabama Arts Council, 209 East Three Notch Street, Andalusia, AL 36420, promotes the arts. It recently has begun a membership drive.

  • The AHS Scholarship Foundation (formerly the Class of ’48 Foundation) funds academic and study-abroad scholarships for local students. The address is P. O. Box 603, Andalusia, Al 36420.
  • Jo’s Community Dinners provides hot meals delivered to those in need or those who are alone on Thanksgiving and Christmas day. Approximately 450 people were served each day in 2016. The address is P.O. Box 1002, Andalusia, AL 36502.
  • Covington County Imagination Library provides one book per month for every child born in the county from birth until kindergarten. By the time the child goes to school, he or she will have a collection of 60 books. The address is P.O. Box 643, Andalusia, AL 36420.
  • Pilots for Christ is a regional charity that provides free air transportation to patients who need specialized care, and for whom travel is a problem. The address is 107 Airport Road, Monroeville, AL 36460.
