Improvements planned for Southern Bypass in April

The southern bypass, which connects Hwy. 29 to Hwy. 55 and is home to the Kiwanis Center, Covington Center Arena, and Covington County Health Department, will be widened and resurfaced this spring.

The Andalusia City Council last night adopted a resolution required for the Alabama Department of Transportation to complete the project. Mayor Earl Johnson said the project also will add a foot to either side of the road.

“This is a big improvement, at no cost to us,” Johnson said.

The project is slated to begin in April.

The council delayed its regular meeting Tuesday after a tornado moved through the area.

In other business, the council:

  • Agreed to provide $5,000 in support of the Alabama High School Rodeo Association holding its annual event here.
  • Approved a single event alcohol license for the National Wild Turkey Federation for its annual fundraiser.
  • Agreed to move its banking to BB&T, after receiving bids from local financial institutions.
  • Agreed to purchase vehicles for the inspection department, horticulture, and maintenance departments.
  • Announced an opening on the Housing Authority. Those interested in serving should complete an application at city hall.
