Two local girls will represent Covington County in the Alabama Baptist All-State Honor Choir next weekend.

Andalusia Elementary School’s Abigail Mills and Straughn Middle School’s Kelsey Kelley were selected from more than 300 students to be in the 162-voice choir for fourth through sixth graders from across the state.

The pair are members of Harmony Baptist Church.

Mills said she loves the song “Come to the Music,” while Kelley said her favorite is “Joshua.”

They have been practicing every Wednesday night and have had some practices in Dothan.

“I’ve been singing since I was about 5 years old,” Mills said. “I just like singing a lot. That’s my favorite thing to do.”

Kelley said she’s been singing since she was 2 and performing on stage since she was 5.

She said she found out about the honor choir from Mills’ father.

The girls had to memorize 10 songs for the performance and have been practicing since December.

“I’ve enjoyed it a lot,” said Kelley. “I love it.”

Mills said the songs have been revoiced and this is her first time singing different harmony parts.

“It’s good, but it’s complicated,” Mills said.

They will perform March 4 at 6:30 p.m., at Dalraida Baptist Church in Montgomery and will perform March 5 at 10:15 a.m., at Eastern Hills Baptist Church in Montgomery.

The group is directed by Karen Gosselin, state missionary and associate in the office of worship leadership and church music for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Mission and accompanied by music specialist Deb Anderson of Elkdale Baptist Church in Selma.
