Lady Eagles punch ticket to state

The Pleasant Home Lady Eagles battled their way through the loser’s bracket on Saturday morning to clinch the second state qualifying spot in the 2017 AHSAA Class 1A South Regional Softball tournament in Gulf Shores.

PLEASANT HOME 0

In the first game Saturday morning, the Lady Eagles fell 4-0 to Millry despite picking up more hits in the contest.

Sissy Martin got a one-out single to start things off the Lady Eagles in the opening frame.

Abby Walker followed with a double into left field, but the Lady Eagles were unable to push across a run.

Ava Bailey got the start in the pitcher’s circle for the Lady Eagles and retired Millry in order in the top of the first with a pair of strikeouts and a ground out.

The Lady Eagles got a strong start to the top of the second inning when Bella Worley led off with a single to center.

Taylor McGhee followed with a line drive double to center that moved Worley to third with no outs.

After a pop out for the first out, Worley was tagged out trying to score on a ground ball to third base, and another pop up ended the Lady Eagle threat.

Millry got a double to start the bottom of the second and then plated the first run of the contest with a fielder’s choice to shortstop.

The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Millry added three runs on three hits and one error.

Bailey singled in the top of the seventh inning, but the Lady Eagles were unable to move her around to score.

PLEASANT HOME 21, RED LEVEL 7

In the first elimination game of the day, Pleasant Home was able to knock off area rival Red Level 21-7 to keep their day going.

Hope Gunter and Martin drew walks to start the game, and then Amy Bulger was hit by a pitch to load up the bases for the Lady Eagles.

Rae Rae Coleman then ripped a pitch to center that caused an error and allowed three runs to come across for Pleasant Home.

Worley then drew a walk before McGhee roped a double to center for a 5-0 Pleasant Home lead.

A few batters later, Gunter tripled to left field and drove in Tiffany Knoll to give the Lady Eagles a 7-0 advantage.

In the pitcher’s circle, Knoll retired the Lady Tigers in order in the bottom of the first inning.

Walker led off the top of the second with a single and quickly stole second base.

Walker then took third base on passed ball and came around to score on single from Bulger.

After a walk and error loaded up the bases with one out, Knoll popped out to Graysie Lee in right field, which allowed Bulger to tag up from third for a 9-0 Pleasant Home lead.

Knoll remained steady in pitcher’s circle and picked up a pair of strikeouts on her way to another 1-2-3 inning.

Two Pleasant Home batters where plunked to start the top of the third inning and then back-to-back doubles from Walker and Bulger put the Lady Eagles up 12-0.

In to bottom of the third inning, Marianne Vigor started the frame with a single for and moved up to second when Alexis Perdue drew a walk.

However, the Lady Eagles were able to get out the inning without giving up a run.

The Lady Eagles added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning with two more runs.

Not looking to go down without a fight, the Lady Tigers found life in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Brooke Foshee was hit a by a pitch with one out and then moved to third when Ashlyn Joyner laced a double to right field.

The Lady Tigers loaded up the bases when Haley White drew a two-out walk.

Tori Hall followed with a double to center that scored Foshee and Joyner.

A single from Olivia Whitefield then plated White to leave the Lady Tigers trailing 14-3.

Ashley Stewart drew a walk to load the bases back up for the Lady Tigers, and Lee then came through with a triple to cut the Pleasant Home lead down to 14-6 heading into the sixth inning.

Maggie Wilkerson picked up an RBI single for the Lady Tigers in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 15-7 heading into the final frame.

Pleasant Home took advantage of five errors from the Lady Tigers in the top of the seventh inning as the grabbed a 21-7 lead.

In the pitcher’s circle for the Lady Eagles, McGhee struck out two in the final inning to help extend Pleasant Home’s stay in the South Regional.

PLEASANT HOME 11, SWEETWATER 4

Facing elimination for the second time in as many games, the Lady Eagles rolled to an 11-4 victory over Sweetwater to advance to the runner-up game.

Gunter got things started for the Lady Eagles with a single in the bottom of the first inning.

Martin then laced a tripled to left field to plate Gunter for the first run of the game.

A single from Bulger two batters later pushed Martin across for a 2-0 Pleasant Home lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, Martin singled to center field to score Tammi Hilson from third base.

The Lady Eagles added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning when Worley dropped to a sacrifice bunt to score Bulger.

Coleman then scored on a passed ball to give the Lady Eagles a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Worley roped a double to left field to score Walker and then a two-run home run off the bat of McGhee gave the Lady Eagles an 11-4 advantage.

PLEASANT HOME 6, MILLRY 2

After falling to Millry first thing Saturday morning, the two teams met again for the in the South Regional runner-up match, but this time it was the Lady Eagles who game away with a 6-2 victory and a spot in this week’s state tournament in Montgomery.

Walker reached first with a two-out single in the bottom of the third inning and then moved up to second base on a single from Bulger.

The Lady Eagles then loaded up the bases with a single from Coleman.

Walker then stole home to put the Lady Eagles up 1-0.

Gunter added an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to put Pleasant Home on top 2-0.

Pleasant Home continued to swing strong bats and a double off the bat of Walker brought Hilson into score.

Bulger followed with a two-run single to put the Lady Eagles out front 5-0.

Millry picked up a run off three hits in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Lady Eagle lead to 5-1.

McGhee tacked on the final run of the day for the Lady Eagles with a single to center field in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the top of the seventh, Millry scored one run off four hits, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Lady Eagles from earning a 6-2 victory and a spot in the state softball tournament.

With the win, the Lady Eagles will play Thursday at 10:30 a.m., at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.
