A home on Lindsey Bridge Road is a complete loss after it caught fire Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters from Sanford, Andalusia and Babbie fought the blaze at 17967 Lindsey Bridge Road beginning at about 2:30 p.m. Sanford Fire Chief James Adams said when the call came to them from E-911 Wednesday afternoon they were told there was an ATV on fire in a carport that had ammunition in it.

“When I arrived on scene there were already a lot of people there,” he said. “And the house was about half way gone. No one was home when the fire started.”

Around 7 p.m., Adams still had firefighters at the home, but said they had the fire under control.

“We are just babysitting it right now,” he said. “It’s going to burn some until probably Saturday.”

Benny Gay, who lives across the pond from Hunter and Heather Owen, said his wife heard some unusual noise.

“We live behind them,” he said. “My wife heard some popping, and it didn’t seem like smoke from a trash fire, and it wasn’t in a location that would normally be a trash fire.”

Gay said he got in his vehicle and rode around to the home, which was in flames when he arrived.

“There were others present and deputies were on scene when I got here,” he said.

Other neighbors said it appeared to have started on the right side of the home.

The home was previously owned by Dennis and Altheia Meeks, who watched emotionally as the home burned.
