Man breaks in vehicles as Opp cops pursue in foot chase

An Opp man is facing burglary charges and potentially other charges after he allegedly burglarized a home in Opp.

Opp Police Chief Mike McDonald said Friday that B-Shift officers were notified around 6:08 p.m., Thursday, that there was a burglary at a residence in the 500 Block of 3rd Street.

“The subject made entry into the residence by forcing the back door open,” McDonald said. “The resident, a disabled lady, was inside the residence and when she heard the subject make entry, she met the subject in her laundry room and pushed him out of her home. The subject began to walk away and the victim asked her neighbors to call the police.”

McDonald said while neighbors were calling the police, the suspect broke into a vehicle at the intersection of Dry Street and Douglas Avenue, and then entered a second vehicle that was parked behind a shed in the same area.

McDonald said the suspect then walked to a residence on Batton Street when a patrol unit attempted to make contact.

“The subject fled northbound from the officers on foot,” he said. “The officers gave chase crossing West Cummings Avenue, West Covington Avenue, West Hart Avenue and West Street.”

McDonald said during the foot pursuit, numerous residents were giving officers information on which way the suspect was running.

“Several citizens played a major role in this arrest by providing information to the officers,” he said. “We also observed an off-duty Andalusia Police officer that lives in Opp that was out assisting officers.”

McDonald said a perimeter was established on West Ida Avenue, which forced the suspect to turn and run south.

“Officers continued the chase and the subject was taken into custody on Dorsey Street in the area of the Southside Baptist Church.”

Officers arrested Manderius J. Mount, 20, of Opp, and charged him with burglary second degree.

McDonald said charges for two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle are pending.

Mount was booked into the Covington County Jail.
