Swimming into the championship

Several local athletes put up strong times this weekend at the AHSAA Class 1-5A South Sectional swim meet in Mobile.

Straughn freshman Grace Philpott earned state qualifying times in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke.

Philpott’s time of 1:05.81 backstroke in the earned her a regional championship and it was also a personal best in the event.

In the breaststroke, Philpott finished sixth with a time of 1:19.05.

Opp freshman Conner Tillman qualified for state are placing second in the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 5:38.62. Tillman also qualified for state in the 200-yard freestyle with a fourth place finish and a time of 2:05.69.

Opp sophomore Emma Younce put on spectacular performance and captured two regional championships in the 100-yard butterfly and the 50-yard freestyle.

Younce finished with a time of 1:02.49 in the butterfly and 25.57 in freestyle.

Opp senior Elisabeth Younce also competed in the event, but came up just short of earning a spot in the state meet.

These three swimmers will travel to Auburn University on Dec. 1 and 2 to compete in the AHSAA state swim meet.
