Obama: Change has come

Published Wednesday, November 5, 2008

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Barack Obama swept to victory as the nation's first black president Tuesday night in an electoral college landslide that overcame racial barriers as old as America itself. "Change has come," he told to a huge throng of jubilant supporters.

The son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas, the Democratic senator from Illinois sealed his historic triumph by defeating Republican Sen. John McCain in a string of wins in hard-fought battleground states — Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Iowa and more.

On a night for Democrats to savor, they not only elected Obama the nation's 44th president but padded their majorities in the House and Senate, and come January will control both the White House and Congress for the first time since 1994.

Obama's election capped a meteoric rise — from mere state senator to president-elect in four years.

In his first speech as victor, Obama catalogued the challenges ahead. "The greatest of a lifetime," he said, "two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century."

While Obama won 51 percent of the nation’s popular vote, he captured 338 electoral college votes.

But Alabama and Covington County remained a red state and county. Obama only received 39 percent of the popular votes in the state and only 21 percent in Covington County.

What a sad, sad, day. I can only hope and pray that I am wrong about this man.
May God have mercy on us.

This is a sad day for America and I can only hope that people come together and pray for our nation, cause we are gonna need it. What has the people of America done, putting a Muslim in the power seat? The next four years is gonna be a nightmare of which the people of this country has never seen. God is the answer and I hope he protects what he has created, cause this man (obama) will destroy it!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NATION FOR WAKING UP IN A BETTER WORLD! Finally, after eight long years of deception and tyranny, we can again hold our heads high as a nation revered! The slanderous tactics of calling President Obama a "Muslim," "terrorist," and "socialist," fell on deaf ears, shined a light on the hatred of a few, and gave opportunity to the citizens of this great nation to rebuke ingorance. What a sad day for the Andalusia Star to allow such racist and backward comments (even though the paper states you cannot)... this shows the true racial diversity of the readers of the Star news and their feelings...

Yes, God is in control, He is the answer and is in Charge... And the Bible states God puts all rulers in positions of power. As a CHRISTIAN I AM PROUD TO HAVE VOTED FOR OBAMA.....

Regardless of your thoughts... Obama is still the PRESIDENT and Biden is the Vice-President... Oh yes and Palin is riding back to Alaska, but not before taking women and their opportunities to another level.... However, John McCain will be in Washington moving forward as a Senator representing all of us. --

Despite Alabama being a majority "Red State" -- People around the USA and World want a Change from "Bushes" failed policies that have crippled our economic growth and opportunities.

I am amazed at individuals who cannot debate the facts of the candidates other than to state "Muslim or tickets to Africa". Argue a view rather than stupidity

I may have to pay more in taxes, but am willing to do my share to support this country. Even with backwards, racial individuals who want to divide and use negative views to tear this country apart.

This is a day all Americans should be proud that we live in a country that allows anyone to speak, be hear, and possible be President.

To the first comment about a muslim being in power and this is not a nightmare. I promise you this president cannot do any worse than the nightmare we are already in. Obama cannot destroy anything that Bush has not already done in the last 8 years. The economy is worse than it has been in history. This campaign has proved that everyone is ready for change and this state needs some help with that from your comments. I am not from Africa and I do not intend on living there. Please try to open to open your minds to change

Only thing we can hope is that Obama doesn't ever get the chance to make any changes without the approval of the house and senate. For a campaign that was ran on not being "racial" it's amazing to me how it changed somewhere after the election to be all racial. Pray for America, we need it now more than ever.

I agree admin23. All you heard was that it was NOT about race, and now all of a sudden, boom.....racists! Please....I sincerely pray that all AMERICANS stand up for themselves, and don't allow the muslims to walk over us. WE are in this war because of Obama's kind....one can only guess what's to come next.....go ahead, open up all the doors, push Americans out.....that's what's gonna happen. We, who are born here, as true Americans, don't have a chance in hell now.....I say send em' all back where they belong!

I can say a few things. The only thing about Obama is he don't believe in God but there is a lot of people who don't. So we can not blame him for that because before he got president they had already taken prayer out of schools and football games. Bush has already taken this world down and I am a person who has so much faith in the good Lord above and I am not going to throw stones at Obama because what ever happens will happen. I wasn't for either one of our president canidates. But all we can do is HOPE and PRAY for the better. I do fear that things are going to get alot worse and people who live on a fix income I don't know what to say but feel sorry for them and hope this man will help.

It is crazy to look at all the unpatriotic people from Covington county on here. This is way Andalusia, Opp, Florala and the other areas will continue to run in a different direction than the rest of the world. Mr. Obama isn't muslim and he never ran his campaign on the fact that he is black. Why start praying for America now, when you should have been praying for it since the day you started praying. I have gone to war and defended this country, and for someone to tell to go back to Africa is crazy. i have never been there. I am an American who is black, besides, I think the Native Americans who had this land first have a better argument than you to tell someone to go back somewhere. God created the world not just the United States of America, let's not forget that. We need to work together as a nation to be better not tear each other down like the few people who have written comments on this subject. My president as of right now is Bush and I have supported him even when I haven't agreed with him. He was my Commander in Chief and I never doubted him when I had to go to Iraq. I will do the same under Mr. Obama. Regardless, on January 20, 2009 my president who is a CHRISTIAN with CHRISTIAN VALUES will be black, but the funny thing about it for all people in this nation who have terrible things to say about him, he will be yours too. There is nothing I or you can do about it. If you don't like it you can get a ticket and go to Africa or where ever so we TRUE Americans who believe in Democracy and those who have defended this country can truly salute the flag like it is suppose to be saluted.

I just hope that everyone in this great country remembers that we are all "One Nation Under God". And it is going to take prayer and blessings from the Almighty God above to change this nation, not one man.

Where do I begin? To "justice" President-elect Obama is not from Africa, and I would venture a guess that a vast majority of we who voted for him have never been to Africa either. But if you'd like to buy my ticket, I could use a vacation. What is it going to take for people to understand that President-elect Obama is NOT a Muslim? Do the research with an open mind, people! Following like sheep is what has gotten us into the mess we've gotten into the last eight years! And to patwilliam, President-elect Obama WAS born here - Hawaii was a state when he was born there. Or are you incinuating that immigrants are not welcome here? Unless you are 100% Native American, your forefathers had to have come from somewhere else. Everyone needs to UNITE and support the new administration and work together to dig out of this hole we're in here at home and abroad.

Posted by rustynail1 (anonymous) on November 5, 2008 at 8:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I've read about him, heard about him, been told about him. I don't have a lot to write about him, other than, I just don't like him. I do have a comment about this being a race issue. If it isn't a race issue then why is it so important to write about " America's first black president?" I heard there were people in several places in the United States, including Andalusia that was asked to leave the polling places due to "intimidating" the public. It's been a racial issue from the start of his campaign.

Posted by JayL (anonymous) on November 5, 2008 at 9:13 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It is important because it is an historic event. It shouldn't have to be racial, but if you think it is then so be it.

Posted by scobb (anonymous) on November 5, 2008 at 9:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It amazes me how close-minded you people can be. Barack Obama is not Muslim. He is a Christian. But, even if he was Muslim, whatever happened to freedom of religion? Not all Muslim people are terrorists. I voted for Barack Obama because of his stand on the issues. I voted for Barack Obama because I feel this country needs change, so that hard working people, like most of us in Covington County, will not have to struggle to put our kids through college one day, or decide which bill you're not going to be paying so that you can put groceries on the table. To justice and the rest of you that are being hateful, I'm sure it won't matter in the end what Obama does. He could end up being the best President this country has or will ever see, but you won't care, because all you care about is the fact that you're certain he's Muslim.
As for the news stating that Obama is America’s first black President…hello…it is history in the making!! Would you have griped and moaned this morning had McCain/Palin won and they went on about how she was the first female vice-president? Again, that would have been a major history making event. No, they wouldn’t have because she’s white…and that’s what makes this sad.

To JayL, God Bless You and thank you for your brave service to defend our great democracy. And to all those who want to make this a racial issue, I am a WHITE, middle-aged female.

Where do I begin? I am really saddened that in this day and time there are still "people" in this world who just don't get it! Some of you just can not handle the thought of an African American running this country or better yet getting ANY high position, period! Let me remind some of you that black people did not ask to come to this county, "YOU" brought them here so that you could make money by selling them to the highest bidders!!! Now you want to send black people back to Africa just because the United States has a black president!?? Black people are here to stay and they ain't(excuse the grammar!)going nowhere!! How can you claim that you are Christians and are going to heaven when you can not get along with people of different ethnicities and cultures? Huh!!!!! Yes, change can be a scarry thing but this country is LONG overdue for a change. Obama will not be able to clean up all of this mess with one term; it's going to take more than 4 or 8 years to clean up the mess the Bush and past presidents have created for the United States. I commend Muziknmotn, Contactpgm, fancy2167, and JayL and others for their positive comments. I can't believe that the Andalusia Star News would allow such racists comments in their newspaper, I don't care if they do have the right to free speech. Some things should not be said publicly! God Bless you all and God Bless America!

LadyBug6, it has been your comment I have been waiting on all morning. I knew it wouldn't take long for someone to post a comment about white people brought black people over here. If you had ever done your research you would see that actually it was Africans who brought Africans over here becuase THEY wanted to sell them to the highest bidder. Also, before Africans were sold as slaves in the America guess who the slaves were, WHITE PEOPLE. However, you don't see us walking around talking about what the world owes us.
Obama was brought up a muslim. This concerns people becuase it was MUSLIMS that crashed airplanes into our bulidings on September 11, 2001. It was MUSLIMS who danced in the streets and celebrated as our people died in those crashes and as our troops died and continue to die overseas.
As far as the question would we have complained if McCain and Palin would have won? Of course not! That's who we obvioulsy voted for. That's who most of Alabama voted for. We are a republican state. There was never any doubt who Alabama would vote for.

I am not against Obama because of his race...although he is half white. Everyone seems to have forgotten that. The entire campaign all anyone was interested in was that he was black and a muslim. He is not a Muslim, his father was. He is not entirely black, just as none of us are entirely white, black, pink or purple. I didn't vote for Barack Obama because I don't like his stand. I didn't not vote for him because of his color, religion, or anything else that people are saying. Segregation is over and it has been for years and years and years...for those of you who don't want to let it go...GROW UP! I have never owned a slave, just as none of you have ever been a slave. I don't owe you anything and you don't owe me anything. We need to start getting along as humans and AMERICANS. I am afraid that middle income America is going to be over taxed and the rich will get richer and the poor will get richer. It is those of us in the middle who are going to get screwed!

Posted by admin23 (anonymous) on November 5, 2008 at 11:31 a.m. (Suggest removal)

nurse you just summed it up. I did not not vote for Barack Obama because he was bi-racial. I didn't vote for Obama because I do not believe I should have to give part of my earnings to someone else because they are less fortunate. I earn my money and should be given the liberty and freedom to disperse it to whom I see fit. No more taxes on my hard earned money, it's not fair to those of us who work hard and provide for our families but those who do not seem to make it we have to be taxed higher for. The only ones who would agree to this way of life would be those who do not work at all or find loop holes out of taxes everytime anyway.

Posted by Festus (anonymous) on November 5, 2008 at 12:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Let me just explain why I voted the way I did.I did not agree with Mr. Mccain or Mr. Obama. I'm a small business owner who is even now in high tax bracket. We employ several people and it's their livley hood as well as my own I'm worried about. If the new president taxes me any more it would be to my benifit to reduce my employees as well as my production to come under the 250,000.00 threshole. That not only hurts me but the familys who work for my company but also the tax base as a whole. At this time we were looking to expand, but for now we'll just have to wait and see.Mr. obama said he didn't mind paying a littlt more .I DO.

Posted by TABO (anonymous) on November 5, 2008 at 1:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I have no problem with an African American running this country.I don't mind that at all. But look back fifty years. We wouldn't have heard such derogatory words used on television, we wouldn't have celebrated a bisexual couple exchanging vows, nor would we have allowed the thought of aborting babies just because you want to. I don't mind paying higher taxes and helping those that can't help themselves. However, there are more than enough people drawing checks that could get out and at least flip burgers. However, those people would rather stay home and have babies so they can draw a larger check. No, I am not just referring to African Americans; there are white people that do the same thing.I wanted to vomit when I saw all the people cheering last night on television over Barack Obama's victory.People, this is the beginning of our punishment. For those of you that go to church, you know what is going to happen.I pray I am wrong, and I am praying for Barack Obama's salvation, because no person, no matter who they are can run a country without God's help. We, Christians, have started accepting things that should not be; we do not want to stand up for our beliefs. We need to come together, color aside, and start praying for this nation. And on the subject of President Bush, I have to defend him.The economic problem that we are in is not just on him.Situations like this do not come overnight. Situations like this come after several years.President Clinton signed packages to supposedly "help" us when he was in office, and now we are seeing the results of it.Everything that Obama does will not take affect overnight. He may not even be in office when the rewards (if any) begin to appear from the changes he has made. On racism, there are people who are racist in this country; however, there are a lot of people just wanting to claim that we, white people, are racist.I have never owned a slave and I never will.I don't hate African Americans and I never will. But one thing is for certain. The way a person carries themselves reflects on his or her character.Whether the person is black or white or even Asian. We need to start carrying ourselves in a dignified manner.Start keeping your appearance up, start using ENGLISH appropriately (after all this is AMERICA) if we were to go to another country we would be expected to speak that language, let's start expecting people to speak English.Everyone who possibly can need to start working for what we have and start helping those who CANNOT.Cannot and will not are two different things. And about Obama, he needs to grow a respect for this country and he needs to start soluting the flag.We need to be proud of our freedom here and we need to preserve it.I personally did not vote for him, because I am a Christian and I would have felt extremely convicted if I had. That is my belief. And for everyone who doesn't believe that it is going to get worse, read REVELATIONS!!!

The election is over. The decision has been made. It is now our responsibility as Americans to unite as a country. Many of the users have said something along the lines of it being impossible for just one man to ruin the world so we should all calm down and quit bashing Obama. Everyone should also keep that in mind when they bash and/or refer to President Bush's past terms in office. He is NOT single-handedly responsible for the shape our economy is in.

WE are the ones who took out loans on houses that we couldn't afford so now they are being foreclosed on. WE are the ones who spend our money on vehicles that are too expensive and vacations that are unnecessary and clothes that are overpriced. And now we are trying to blame BUSH for the shape we're in? Impossible. We should all be ashamed of ourselves and own up to our past mistakes. WE are the only ones capable of turning this economy around by making better financial decisions in the future and continuing to have high voter turn outs for EVERY election that we can vote in and not JUST this election because we wanted to see the first, black President.

Everyone should also keep in mind that while those who DIDN'T vote for Obama because he was black made a racist decision...those who DID vote for him because he was black are just as guilty of being racist. I am proud of those who went to the polls and voted because they knew the issues and where their beliefs fell.

Romans 13:1 - "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God."

We may not understand God's will, but God is ultimately in control. I may not agree with Mr. Obama, but I will support him because it is in God's will for him to be in the position he is in now. God bless.

You all are correct. When I was in nursing school, I worked at a local grocery store. I had to tell a lady that the dog food she wanted to purchase was not covered by her foodstamps. She had her son take the dog food to put it back on the shelf. She also told him to "grab a couple of steaks because their dog could eat steak." At that time I felt like I could vomit. I was so upset with the mis-use of the system. I went home and told my grandmother and she just shook her head. It is people like that who will benefit from Obama going into office. She will be rewarded, while the rest of us who are working for a living will be punished. I know that there is nothing we can do about it now...the people have spoken. I just hope that in 3 1/2 years that those same people are the ones reaping the "benefits" of Obama's election. I remember several years ago when Clinton went into office...people were so excited. But years after Monica and others surfaced, you were hard put to find anyone that would admit that they elected him to office. May God be with us all.

Enough with all this. He will be our president like it or not. I think we can all agree that the country is in the tank because of what's happened with President Bush. The question is can all you who voted for McCain, that's black, white, hispanic or whatever, do the patriotic thing and get behind Mr. Obama? I asked the question because he will still extend his arm out to you to help you.

JayL, it's not very patriotic to blame President Bush for the problems of our economy and if you can read any of the comments above yours, you would see that we don't all blame Bush for the way things are currently. It has more to do with people who want to live outside of their means. Obama is not offering his arm out to me to help me. He is wanting to raise my taxes!

Posted by cagriffinbdx (anonymous) on November 5, 2008 at 3:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I can get behind Mr. Obama (which is what my last post was about actually), but hypothetically...I wonder had McCain been elected...If all of the Obama supporters would have taken the loss and supported McCain the way they are expecting the McCain supporters to back Obama now?

I tend to doubt this very much seeing as how many of those people are the very ones who are BLAMING Bush for EVERYTHING that is wrong in society. We should support EVERY President that has been/will be elected. Not just Obama. Then, when the time comes to vote and elect a new leader then we can do so if we're unhappy with the situation.

I suppose it excited a lot of people, though, that they think Obama is going to "take from the rich and give to the poor" (a.k.a. they think they don't have to work and someone else will pay their bills) I'm afraid that's not going to go as planned. But, I'm in it for the long haul and just like everyone else, I'll have to wait and see.

I didn't vote for President Elect Obama as his title is but, I will support him and stand behind him as the President of the country. People need to stop being racist and stand behind the man America elected. This nation will only survive if we can stand togather. As for the problems with the economy it follows a natural cycle of ups and downs if any of you ever care to take an Economics course. Thanks to my Economics teacher I learned that. But, notice Congress's approval rating is lower than President Bush's and it's a Democrat controlled Congress. The economy started going south in 2006 right around the time the Democrats took control of Congress. But, we need to support the man America has elected whether we like it or not. I will fight for this country whehter the Presidents name is Barack Obama or John McCain.

Wow...everyone seems to have some kind of opinion, so I guess I'll voice mine. First of all, I DID NOT vote for Mr. Obama.....not because he's black, half-black, or whatever.....but because I don't agree with his views on certain issues. AND as for the whole Muslim thing....some people apparently haven't read into him as much as they should have. A direct quote from Mr. Obama states, "I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction". I personally don't want a president who's going to "side with the enemy." Although, it seems some people don't seem to mind that. Hello.....9-11!!!!! I can only do like some of these others & HOPE & PRAY that things will get better. However, I feel like it will only go downhill from here. Say what you want....but that's MY opinion!!! (And many more people feel that way too, whether they post it on here or not)

I have to admit that I a white/middle aged/college educated/veteran of the United States Air Force/southern Democrat and I support Obama. I think a lot of people have let the issue of race cloud their minds and hate rule their heart. We are truly a nation of immigrants, our ancestors all sailed across an ocean to arrive in this country. Obama has a white mother from Kansas, of all places, and a black father from Kenya so he is neither white nor black, he is American. America is a melting pot and in America the majority of us have DNA comprised of several different races. To me Obama being mixed is a blessing, he has had a unique look at America threw both white and black eyes. How many of us can say that? He has seen the farmers struggle in Kansas and experienced the plight of his father's family in Kenya. He, to me, is what America is all about. Do I agree with everything Obama believes, of course not but I don't agree with everything Bush stands for either. We are all equal in the eyes of God. For those who prayed for McCain to win, sometimes God answers our prayers by telling us no. Garth Brooks had a song out years ago that said some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers and that may be the case here. I agree the race issue has been discussed non stop since last night's election but you have to accept the fact that this is truly a defining moment in our nation's history. If Sarah Palin had been elected vice president we would be hearing this morning how historic it is that a woman is serving as vice president because of the historic significance of the moment. Only about 50 years ago a black man couldn't drink out of the same water fountain as a white man but today he is president-elect. That my friends is history. I long for the day when we will truly be the United States of America, when it won't matter whether a black man, mexican, native american or woman is elected president. I believe instead of spending billions of dollars building homes for the people in Iraq we should be spending our money helping Americans who are homeless. We completed our mission in Iraq when we captured Saddam now it is time to bring out guys home. We are the only nation in the world that feels the need to rebuild a country we helped destroy in war. I served in Desert Storm and my husband has served in this war. I don't think anymore Americans should die for people who are selling us gas at such high rates that gas is becoming a luxury. I love this country and have put my life on the line and served in combat and so has my husband. When we were fighting for this country we were fighting for all Americans, not just white America.

Way to go Ciego03! I had read that comment in the past, but was unable to recall it from File 13! Obama has been elected President. We must all deal with it...good or bad. As for the economy...President Bush is not solely responsible for that. He didn't just wake up one day and say "Hey. I think the economy should suck." We all did this. We have long been living beyond our means. The problem that bothers me is, Obama plans to take my hard earned money and give it to those who chose to sit around and draw a welfare check. I do not respect that. I work over 40 hours a week for my paycheck. I worked and sent myself to school in order to become a productive part of our society. I was not raised to be a bum, but I guess that is where our nation is headed...condemn the working class and reward those who lie about injuries in order to gain a disability check and manipulate the system in order to draw food stamps. What a disgrace that is to our country!

I have read all comments and took every one into consideration and I have come up with some questions. Will Obama help our elderly? Will Obama help those of us are working 2 and 3 jobs to put our children through college? Will I have any Social Security when I reach 65? Will I as middle class have to pay more taxes than I already do? My Mother worked for a textile mill for 30 years and during Clinton's term it was closed and sent over seas because the company couldn't compete over here. Now she is 60, disabled and has no insurance coverage until after she has been on Disability for 2 years! She is a extremely bad diabetic and her medicine is over $400.00 dollars a month, that is over half of what she receives! I am a single Mom with 3 children who has never received any kind of benefit from the government. I have always worked more than 1 job at the time. These are my issues, I would love for there to be more help for people less fortunate than myself. I don't mind paying taxes, but I am already pulled thin as it is. I think that is what alot of people are worried about.

Concerned1, I think you said it all. We all are already stretched way too thin. Our taxes are high enough. Why should we have to pay higher taxes in order to give to those less fortunate. They should help themselves!

"I don't think anymore Americans should die for people who are selling us gas at such high rates that gas is becoming a luxury." (quote from above)

Me neither. McCain actually supported lifting the ban on East coast drilling so we could become more self-reliant as far as our country's oil is concerned while Obama does not want any East coast drilling. So I'm afraid the oil situation will probably not change much regardless of the fact that we have a Democrat as President-elect.

It just makes me so mad that Mother is having to struggle so hard when she has worked so hard all her life. Nothing was given to her and now when she should be able to relax she is struggling and I am working so hard to help her and take care of my children also. I hope that as our Country's leader that he makes the lazy people get off their behind and work. No free rides!!!! Take care of elderly and my gosh how can someone who makes under $30,000 like me pay anymore taxes? We do need a leader and maybe by the help of God this nation will improve!

Why are all of you racist hiding behind “anonymous”? I agree that Andalusia Star News should not even allow such imbecilic comments (for those racist who made those comments…imbecilic means ignorant, unintelligent, dumb). Excuse me…I may be using too many big words for you. Our nation is at the worst it’s been in years. It is sad that some people would rather continue in this depression that we are in, than have a black man as president. Thank you President Obama for giving us hope that a CHANGE will come!

I'm using my freedom of speech because I don't agree, so I am being patriotic. I answered the call when President Bush needed me. I serve a country without question. So I am very patriotic. You say Mr. Obama wants to raise your taxes. Taxes will be raised on the upper class who needs no help. Truly, the Bush administration has given far too many tax breaks to the upper class that doesn't need it. So like Mr. Obama has said from the beginning he will roll back the tax breaks to where they were when Clinton was in office on people making $250,000. McCain wanted to tax the middle class even more than Bush and tax health benefits among other things. The Middle Class is hurting and that's where the bulk of America is. He wants to help small businesses and businesses who doesn't ship jobs overseas. People cannot pay on mortgages because their jobs are closing or being shipped overseas because of what has gone on with Wall Street and was going on overseas. Bush had the power to do something about it. That's how the rich are getting richer. $10 billion dollar a day war in Iraq? For what? Military leaders does not really know. Contrary to what you are being told. There is no winning or losing in Iraq. The war should be waged in Afghanistan where the real threat is. But like I said the real question is will you do the patriotic thing and support President Obama? With all that's being said on here, it's hard to say about some of you. Tax break to 95% of Americans? How could you not?

tayrjones, you really should get your grammar correct before posting a comment. Truly, it makes you seem imbelic! If you are addressing more than one racist, you would make it plural...racists. However, I do not think that anyone here is racist. I think that we are all entitled to an opinion. That is what this forum is all about...opinions. And, in the United States of America, we are still entitled to freedom of speech!

So like Mr. Obama has said from the beginning he will roll back the tax breaks to where they were when Clinton was in office on people making $250,000."-JayL's comment...now someone explain to me why it is fair to raise the taxes on those who make 250,000 yearly? Small business owners, the very ones who America was built on are going to be taxed???? Taxing them makes absolutely no sense. People can't pay on mortgages because they are buying houses they can't afford. Trying to put gas in luxury cars and SUV's they can't afford the payment on much less the gas in the cars to get them to their jobs. Obama believes in a classless society, Americas economy will never survive a classless economy.

It makes me sad to read some of the things being said on here. I've traveled all over this nation and everywhere I've been there are always people who associate Alabama with racism and ignorant rednecks. Comments like many of those above do little to dispel this stereotype.

If you've made it this far and still think Barack Obama is a Muslim, terrorist, or a threat to this country you are amazingly ignorant and clearly have made absolutely no effort to remedy this. I bet you are the same folks who mindlessly believe and forward every e-mail you receive. It takes some seriously willful ignorance to continue to propagate this sort of tripe.

As far as the Muslim thing, let me quote Collin Powell:

"Well, the correct answer is, he is not a Muslim, he's a Christian. He's always been a Christian. But the really right answer is, what if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer's no, that's not America. "

I've read every comment above and I haven't tallied it up, but I'd guess that about 85% of the statements made have been false or gross misrepresentations of the truth. Everyone is entitled to have an opinion and express it, but that doesn't mean anyone cares what you have to say.

If you have researched the candidates and the issues and used information from a reputable source to determine you don't agree with Obama's ideas or policies, then that is great. That's what this country is all about. In case you haven't figured it out by this point, I have done just that and I voted for Obama.

But just for the record, I also like John McCain. He is a bona fide war hero and a great patriot. His conduct while a prisoner of war was exemplary and he has endured suffering that most people will never comprehend. However, after watching this campaign closely I felt as time went on he acted less and less like the "maverick" John McCain and more like the people who crafted the policies that got us into this huge mess. He seemed out of touch with normal Americans and the problems facing the nation (couldn't recall how many houses he owns, thought the fundamentals of the economy were strong). He also made several questionable decisions, not least of them being Sarah Palin.

Bottom line, like it or not Obama will be your president on January 20th. Continuing to spread lies and hate speech or preach Revelations is not going to change that or change the minds of the 53% of voters who believed Obama's messages of hope and change.

"Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction." I didn't vote for Obama. However, I feel the qoute cited above should be considered in the proper context.

I did not vote for Obama, but we were all ask by John McCain to do our part to take the country foward. As long as the gov't does not interfer with my constitutional rights, I can do my part. Don't take away my freedom of religion, freedom of speech, right to bear arms, etc... Nurse, I totally agree with you. I knew a lady during the Clinton admin. that did not work, because she would get more gov't assistance by staying home than she could make by working. My vote was not racist. We were all raised with certian values. Mine included, that part about life begining at conception. No abortion, what part of that is not murder. Amen to Calf. for voting down the gay marriage admendment. There's alot promised that will never be carried out by the President or the Congress. Someone said Obama could not do anything without the approval of the Congress. Let me see, the House is controlled by the Dems. The Senate is controlled by...., oh yeah, the Dems. So therefore, Obama can do, almost, anything he wants. I just hope the "Change" is not what we are going to need to pay our higher taxes. Taxes will rise no matter who the Pres. is. Maybe Obama will make smart choices, when picking his cabinet members. We had bad years with Pres. Bush, but also with Pres. Clinton. I know we will rebound again. Let's just all pray that God's will to be done. Don't forget, He will put trials before us. God Bless !!!

No, Sarah Palin was not a bad choice. Don't slam her she has accomplished more in her political life, thus far, than most do in a lifetime. 2012 is only 4 years away. Who knows? Gov.Palin, you will always get my vote. Realist, do you know that she also cleaned up problems in her own party in Alaska? Gov. Palin was not a bad choice. The far left supported Obama, now they're going to want their pay back. Now what? PRAY !!!

Posted by realist (anonymous) on November 5, 2008 at 11:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Sarah Palin is a very popular governor and did indeed accomplish a lot in Alaska, but she also abused her power to get her former brother-in-law fired. She thinks living close to Russia qualifies her as a foreign policy expert. Based on that and her numerous displays of ignorance, including ignorance of the VP's role in the Senate, I feel she was a bad choice and hurt McCain. In four years, yeah, she may be ready, but when she was chosen she was not ready or at least she was not properly prepared.

Had McCain picked a more experienced conservative he could have probably accomplished the same goal of energizing the Republican base and at the same time avoided a lot of the backlash he got over Palin as the initial fervor for her after the RNC evaporated.

A nurse should know that no one gets on disability without the approval of a doctor and the persons medical records so if there is a problem with people abusing that system it's because a doctor said they qualified.
And let me tell you a story about disability, people who get on it ,can't get off of it! My neice, who was hit by a drunk driver when she was 3 years old was awarded 20,000.00 by the insurance company. It went into the probate fund earned 18 years worth of interest and after all the banks lawyers and such got theirs, my neice at 21 got 2700.00 and because she was on disability, social security took that!!
Your hard earned taxes are not going to help the poor, it is going into some rich jerks pocket that already makes 250,000.00 a year. Tell me how you paid for that, maybe higher insurance premiums but it's not the fault of people on disability. The insurance company paid the bankers and lawyers and our system got the money. My neice who laid in a coma for 12 weeks at Sacred Heart with massive head injuries who had to learn to walk and talk all over again and didn't ask to be run over by a drunk driver didn't get a dime of the money that was meant to help her.!! And I might add my daughter in law who is now applying for disability because some stupid doctor couldn't fiqure out what was wrong with her and wouldn't ship her somewhere else and the ER staff I might add accused her of faking was in 3 different hospitals with a twisted intestines, surgeries too numerous to count and 8 million in doctors bills( she was in the hospital from June to September, half of the time on life support) and she has been waiting for almost 2 years to get her "welfare check" and still toting a bag on her side for her crap to drain in to this day.So please if your going to be in a field that professes to help people please educate yourself on how the system really works or get out. If you see people abusing our system blame the doctor who approved it too! And by the way, neither one of these two people qualifiy for food stamps!! If we all take your view the people who actually need it suffer the most. My neice was 3 and had no control of what happened to her and my daughter in law was a working productive part of society before this happened to her so please get educated!!

I can't believe how programmed the people of Andalusia are. It's like you want the new president to do very badly, but little do you know, if he does badly then the United States does badly. The times are hard and you want them to get worse because there is a President that will be black. I can understand the arguments on taxes if you make more than 250,000. You have a fair assessment on the matter. The American people of all races have spoken. There is no doubting that. All of a sudden you want to start praying because he is black. I wonder who taught you that if someone is black and has a certain title and a little power no matter what it is, the world is going to go to hell? We should try to be better people because of the situation. We should be trying to make the world a better place. But because you look at someone's race, gender, class, or sexual orientation you want to do the opposite. That is so last century. That's why the south now with the exception of a few states is so backwards. The man is trying to heal a nation that is very divided and most people in the south are trying to keep it divided, both black and white. Young people in the south are living like their parents and grandparents and great grandparents lived. It's too much hatred. Instead of trying to go forward you rather be stuck in neutral, rolling backwards.

Did anyone not notice China, Russia, Africa, and those who we are now at war with, are all celebrating Mr. Obamas victory. We all heard what Mr. Obama said during his campaign. Did those of you who voted for Mr Obama not listen to what Mr Obama was actually saying. Like No offshore drilling (keep sending millions of dollars overseas for oil) extra taxes (when or if you succeed in business employers can't afford to give employees (like you and me) raises), oh and hey how about this one lets cut our military (so we won't have enough defense when we get attacked AGAIN) last but not least no guns ( for those who hunt for food like deer, turkey,) . What can I say? For some of us Our bed has been laid for us now we have to sleep in it THANKS

The change Obama is talking about is the system stealing our hard earned money and giving it back to the people where it belongs. A lot of people don't even realize that it is going on. Almost none of the programs we pay taxes for go to the programs themselves, you have this fee and that fee and the banks have to be paid and the system sucks the money up that's why the actual problem never gets solved. By the way did anyone get a letter from their insurance company telling you that legislature approved the states liability insurance requirements were raised and it will reflect the rate increase when you renew your vehicle insurance, now I don't remember voting on that, did I miss something. It's our greedy system not the people!

He didn't say no to offshore drilling just because you didn't hear him say drill baby drill. He supports offshore drilling. He also understand that the government has given the oil companies land to drill on as well, but yet they refuse to drill on it. They oil companies have programmed you to think that they have to buy oil from the middle east, Africa, and Venezuela, when in fact we should be drilling on the land we have set aside. He wants to get off oil not only in other countries, but get off oil period. He want quickly renewable resources. Yes other countries and continents (because Africa is not a country) are celebrating because they feel they will be looked at as human beings and not look downed upon. Taxes on upper class instead of the over taxed middle class. Clinton was in office we had a record surplus that the Bush Administration squandered on tax cuts to the rich and to support Iraq. Employers, such as small businesses will benefit from Obama because that's where he is trying to give a tax break to and not the large corporations that ships jobs over seas and takes jobs from Americans. He wants to cut spending on the military, not cut the military. In fact, he voted to raise pay for the men and women for the military, McCain did not. McCain wanted to place heavier burden on the middle class who is 95% of America. Obama is Pro-guns, he doesn't want the semi automatic weapons that are on the streets. You can hunt all you want to. Do people even read anymore?

The need for change is needed,I voted for McCain and felt he was the only one that could hold our status to our great Military. The need for such as well the need for our security is so important. We also need one that will allow the growth for our security within our nation. The events of 911 was started during a lack of concern for those in at the time. Law enforcement and military cutting must stop. I pray and hope that President -Elect Obama will take such stance, The cutting of funding for this is not needed, we must insure that others know we still mean business as well of his desire to make the changes needed but not at the risk of our SECURITY of our homes and nation. Before Reagan those in the military were way under paid as well being taken care of,so we as AMERICANS need to push him to not let this go forgotten. We must take care of our care takers of Freedom and lets not forget TUESDAY Veterans day, go to the parade and support this great cause and not let this be just another day off. Good luck Mr. Obama keep faith and nation first. Race problems is not the solution, but we all as some have stated are Americans and need each other. I was born and raised in the South, yet have stood by al cultures and races to allow the freedom we have and am as well proud of my own race and culture. Life is to short to hold anger, we in America are as one and must allow this change, without anger.

In no way am I racist towards anyone but I didn't vote for Barack Obama. At one point I thought he was a decent guy until I saw him on t.v. one day speaking about live birth abortions. He seemed okay with the concept. I, personally am not a fan of birthing a child and then killing it. If anyone wants to pass a law where it's okay to kill a child that has been born, they need help.

Health Care is another thing I don't like. Low cost/free health care is the most insane thing I have ever heard of. If this ever passes through the checks and balances, I'm going to guess doctors and nurses are going on strike.
It has nothing to do with the color of his skin. But the fact that what he feels is "okay".

And to the people who have all the negative things to say about his color or nationality...

Go to church on Sunday and try to love someone.

I did not say that everyone on disability gets a welfare check. My mother does not. I think you totally mis-interpretted my statement and chose to make it about hatred. And, if those of us who are in the healthcare profession get out because of the wrong-doings that we do not agree with...who will take care of you when you need it? Just a few things you should think about before you start spewing your rantings in the direction of a nurse or doctor!

Our governemnt is killing people like me that have work all their life and now I am in the battle for my life and to have major surgery I had to beg sell and everything to put up $6000.00 for this surgery to save my life. I did not vote for Obama BUT I am a true American and Obama is now our President and I will support him. As it has been stated above our country is in the worst state it has ever been in. Let us give this man a chance. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE FIRST 1 OR 2 YEARS OBAMA IS IN OFFICE IS TO GET A HANDLE ON WHAT OUR PAST PRESIDENT HAS OR HASN'T DONE!!! So many think as soon as a person gets into office there is change. Well they may change but not as fast as turning off and on a light switch. Something else to remember is that the President doesn't have supreme power. Most decisions must be approved by the house and senste. My hopes are the following: our economic state will level off and get better, that we don't looses "IN GOD WE TRUST", that our new president sees the worthyness to help the aged and to stop helping those that "mooch" off the government and get assistance when they are able to work and need to tighten their belt like many of us have had to do, hopefully there will be fewer tax breaks for thoses that can pay taxes and let's see some help for us that are doing our best to make ends meet, and finally let's see less bail-outs and have people and companys be responsible for ther actions. One more thing those of you that DID NOT vote please keep your mouth shut. You have no right to voice an oppion because you had nothing to do with these results.

I voted for McCain and I am PROUD to say I did. For all you who think he IS NOT Muslim, you need to do some more research. Ciege03 QUOTED HIM!!! And I HEARD HIM SAY, "his MUSLIM faith". The interviewer questioned him, and Obama changed it to his "Christian faith". I'm sorry, but you're not both!!! He's 50% white, 7% black, and 43% Muslim.

I work 8-5 EVERY DAY so I can have nice things and pay my bills. It aggravates the CRAP out of me to see people NOT WORK, lay around and have baby after baby, because they KNOW the state will keep on giving them OUR HARD WORKING money. Now THAT'S what PISSES ME OFF!!!!

And quit blaming Bush for the problems our country is in. Just like someone said earlier, if you can't afford it, THEN DON'T BUY IT. Period.

The other thing that pisses me off is him not saluting the American flag. Do they not have a panel of judges that decide who can or can not run for President of the UNITED STATES!??! Wanting to change our primary language? Wanting to change the American Constitution? I bet Washington and Roosevelt are FLIPPING in their graves....."want to teach the world to sing". We know how to sing, and as far as I'm concerned, I'll keep on singing.....the National Anthem!!!

I will stand behind Obama, basically because like it or not he'll be there for the next several years. I just hope MY GOD, JESUS CHRIST, is with him in this journey that the United States is taking on. GOD BLESS YOU, and GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

"He didn't say no to offshore drilling just because you didn't hear him say drill baby drill. He supports offshore drilling. He also understand that the government has given the oil companies land to drill on as well, but yet they refuse to drill on it." (quote from above)

The oil companies can't just go in and drill on land because they have land to drill on. They do extreme testing to see if there is oil available to drill before they actually go in and drill it. IF there isn't any oil available on that land then what's the point of them drilling on it? The Gulf of Mexico is being drained dry quicker than anyone thinks. And Obama may not have said "no" to offshore drilling, but he certainly isn't keen on moving any of the companies to a new area to find more oil. If they just needed land to drill on to find oil then they could drill in my backyard, but there's more to it than just having the square footage/mileage.

And I wonder, JayL, how many Presidential elections have you actually voted in? Was this your first or have you voted every single year since you were old enough to vote? Just out of curiosity.

JBB, I cannot make any sense out of most of your comment. However, if you are not from Andalusia then why does our newspaper and it's comments bother you so much? I don't quite understand how I could ever be sad that I didn't vote for Obama. Just like most of your comment that also didn't make any sense. Change has not come, nor do I seriously think that it will. At least not the change you are expecting. You are correct in that there were white people voting for Obama and black people voting for McCain. As I stated earlier the only people trying to turn these into racist comments are you and a few others on here who are mad that we didn't all vote for Obama. Let's see if you are still singing your "Yes We Can" buisness in four years.

alhm, Go to the top of the page and read the racist comments and respond to that since you like to respond to my comment. Oh am sorry you didn't respond to those comments because you PROBABLY feel and think the same way. You are a JOKE.

DID YOU FOLKS HEAR WHAT HE SAID WHEN HE WON?? CHANGE MAY NOT HAPPEN IN A DAY, A YEAR, OR EVEN A TERM!! WHAT??! HE NEVER SAID THAT BEFORE ELECTION! HE IS TRYING TO ALREADY LET YOU KNOW HE PROBABLY CAN'T MAKE CHANGE HAPPEN WITHIN 4 YRS.. HMMM.... SOUNDS LIKE THE OBAMA I FIGURED HE WAS... FULL OF B.S.!!

Obama has way too many ties with too many terrorist etc... All the other nations are celebrating because they know they now can come in and do what they want to do....KILL AMERICANS!! Do you not read inter-national news? They all call for a hollocoust of America! They want to come murder you and your children! They think we are a perverted, nasty, trashy, greedy society and I have to say we are becoming that way faster and faster. We need to get back to our roots and PRACTICE the christianity that we claim!

I just pray that God will guide him into doing to correct things because he sure is going to need some help!

Its a shame that you all are not even given OBAMA a chance. It is not his fault the way this country is..... put the blame where it need to go THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. Nothing is changed over night and yes it takes time for change. This Country is in the worst shape it has ever been in thinks to your party. Yes it will take time but some things he can start to put in play. You all kill me on here calling yourselves Christians because we all serve the same GOD even your PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA.

Obamas campaign was based on the change he is going to bring. He won based on he was going to shake up Washington and change this USA back into something postive. Well uhm, as soon as he won he started singing a different tune!! That set off my warnings right there!

The Republican party is not to blame for our broken economy! It is people trying to build houses to big and and too expensive. They all took outragous loans, mortgages, etc.. out trying to live beyond their means! The companies loaning out money that irresponisbly is to blame as well. The PEOPLE OF THE USA are to blame for this and we as the PEOPLE OF THE USA need to come together and fix it.

Ok cagriffinbdx, you can only do so much when you are the minority in congress. Minority meaning democrats being outnumbered by republicans. One piece of land for example in Alaska is redy to be drilled. Wanting to be drilled on. Congress won't act on it. Congress lead by republicans. That's one reason why the seats that are being held by republicans now are being taken by democrats. But let's look at drilling. we find oil, it's all well and good, but it adds to pollution that is majorly in effect today. President Bush right now is trying to pass law to lower restrictions on companies that pumps too much pollution into the air. Yes, Mr. Obama is trying to get more oil but you have to be responsible by doing it. Can't say that much about President Bush. I have voted for President 3 times and city council while I was in Andalusia each time it has come up and senators and house representatives in Florida and Alabama. It's my right to vote and I choose to take it seriously.

Wow. JBB, you really are not helping your cause by using incorrect grammar or spelling. It makes you seem very ignorant. I applaude your conviction to your decision. The fact is that none of us know what is going to happen. We would be in the same shape had McCain gone in...the future is uncertain. People are afraid of the unknown. Obama is unknown. He appeared out of nowhere...he has said things that make people uneasy, and he has danced around the issues. As was said above, he never admitted that CHANGE would take more than a day or a term until after he was elected. I am sure that had he said that during the campaign, those who voted for him might not have been so fired up about him. Now, as for the racist comments. It seems to me that the only people on this forum who are making this a race issue are the people who admit that they voted for Obama. I would have voted for Obama had I believed that he was the right choice for this country. Everyone is ready to place the blame on Bush and the Republican Party for the state of affairs that this country is in...take responsibility for yourself. We have all made poor decisions that helped lead to the economic crisis that OUR country is in.

Let's take race out of this. He isn't President elect because of race. He is president because the man is just brilliant. He beat a good man in John McCain. I happen to agree with McCain on a few things. I just thought that Obama was better.

Okay u people have been complaining all day because a BlAck Man has finally got what this country owes him, no one cried for 8 yrs when the crook of the year was robbing us blind fighting a war that only he and the rich can benefit from now its time for justice in this country even if u so call republican or klansman like it or not, when have u ever known change to happen overnite, we gave the bush's 16 yrs and nothing happen it took Bill to pull us out of one crisis and bush to put us back in and deeper than we ever thought, now it's obama time to get this country back on the right foot u people gave him two terms and all he gave was a rebate check during tax time. Let the Obama have his chance to prover himself worthy before u drag him in the mud.

redbone, I would have to say that your comment is the most racist comment on this page. Number one, you say that this country "owes" Obama something because he is black. No one here owes him anything. Second, you are calling republicans "klansman" which is a racist comment. Please continue showing the true colors of those who voted Obama.

Now own to other issues am not a scared black man from Andalusia we can take the mask off and lets keep it real. I have two college degree's and getting ready to get my third one so you are not talking to a dummy. Am sure you are in Andalusia making no more then 35,000 a year if that and struggling but you are too stupid to realize your PRESIDENT OBAMA was the better choice for you. Let me make it clear for you redbone, I don't owe any black, white, red, orange, purple, or any other color anybody anything and neither does anyone else. The rest of your comment was not as easy to understand due to your run on sentences. But basically, I get the jest of what you are stating. Obama was elected becuase he was "owed" the presidency. You have basically stated that it wasn't becuase he was qualified or because his ideas were the best but simply becuase it was "owed" to him. You have just proven everyone of the above comments that all the "klansman" left.

REDBONE, it's very obvious you're black....and this is probably the ONLY election you've ever voted in. What's sad...is you probably voted because he was BLACK and have NO CLUE what he stands for...along with OVER HALF the people who FINALLY voted in America!!!! Hell, most of them didn't even know HOW to vote, because they never did care about who our President was!!!! And another thing, I DON'T OWE OBAMA A DAMN THING!!!! You need to get an education and learn proper English...well, maybe not, Obama wants to change that too!!!

Posted by nurse (anonymous) on November 6, 2008 at 3:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

JBB. I am not perfect, nor have I ever claimed to be. I would suggest to you that you put your 2 or 3 college degrees to good use and represent yourself as an educated person. If you had read all the comments, you would see that I did also correct someone else on this page about their spelling...those kind of things just bother me. As you said, "am sure you are in Andalusia making no more than $35,000 a year," you are correct, I am in Andalusia. However, obviously your degrees are not in psychic communications because you do not know how much or how little I make. I will never pleasure you with asking you for a job, however you might need me one of these days! Healthcare is not a field in which layoffs are apt to happen, however I am sure at least one or two of your degrees are disposable. Please. Let's keep our focus on the issues. I know who the better Presidential choice for me was, unfortunately he did not win this election. Obama is the President Elect. He will soon be the President of the United States, but I will never say that he is MY President. He is the President that the majority of the people of America thought was the appropriate choice. Just as when Bill Clinton was elected, I will endure this poor choice too. I am not saying that 8 years ago George Bush was the correct decision either. I think we all need to put our differences aside and come together to reclaim our country and make it a better place. I respect those like JayL, who are educated and who do put their beliefs on the line and who are not out to downgrade other people. For those like JBB and redbone...grow up. When you start acting your age and not your shoe size, then we can talk.

This is in response to "Nurse". Thanks for pointing out that I left an "s" off of racist. However, you should have checked your own spelling before posting. You are imbecilic!!! You spelled it “imbelic”, so you are the DUMMY! Get it right before coming on here trying to bash someone’s “opinion” (as you call it). I was not aware that such comments like “go back to Africa” were opinions…last time I checked, it was considered to be a racist remark. If you don’t believe me, say it to a black person and see what happens!

Posted by nurse (anonymous) on November 6, 2008 at 3:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't believe that I stated that anyone should go back to Africa. I do feel that is a racist remark. Thanks for pointing out that I made a mistake...that should make JBB very happy. I am not "bashing" anyone's opinion. I am very pleased that we can all participate in such a forum and share our opinions. Just for clarification, an opinion is someone's thoughts or ideas related to a topic. And, I do not think that we should stoop to name calling...that is so 2nd grade!

nurse, you are right it doesn't make any sense that we all are on here saying what we are saying. Lets take the hoods off our heads and sit down and have a nice non violent, anti racial conversation about the people choice for President. And by the way as long as you live in the United States PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA is YOUR President. Now you do not have to like me but you will respect me as I will respect you we can agree to disagree By the way I do not live in Andalusia making $35,000 a year I live in Atlanta and I live in comfort you beleive that and you are more then welcome to come see how JBB lives :)

I didn’t call you a name…that’s my "OPINION". However, if the sheet fits... wear it! It’s so 2nd grade now that you’ve gotten your ass in hot water…it wasn’t 2nd grade when you felt like pointing out my grammatical error.

See, JBB. That was uncalled for. I don't know anyone who wears "hoods" as you call it. We all need to take a step back and remember that we all have to endure the next 4 years. They will not be easy, nor will they run smoothly. No matter who the president is or was...we have a huge battle that we must fight in order to get our economy back to the way it was. Agreeing to disagree is what this country is all about. Now, thanks for the invitation to your home, but I think I will have to decline! I kinda like it down here in Andalusia.

Have the racists winds changed in this comment section, or is it just me? Correct me if I'm wrong, but JBB, Redbone, and tayrjones don't want to be accused of voting for Obama because he's black, but they are accusing those who voted for McCain of being Klansmen simply because he's white. Fair's fair. Let's keep it even here guys.

It’s sad that I didn’t realize how racist and close-minded Andalusia really was until I left. You all have already made up your minds that PRESIDENT OBAMA is going to bring this country down. I don’t know what country you have been living in for the last 8 years, but the one I have been living in is struggling and depressed! All Bush has managed to do is keep the working middle class down. Why don’t you talk to some of the mothers and fathers who lost a son or daughter in Iraq. Explain to the kids who have lost their parents why mommy or daddy is never coming home. Better yet, why don’t you go over and fight the war…I bet your “opinion” will change then!

southernbelle, give me three good reason why you voted for McCain without looking them up.... I vote because he is going to end the war, help the middle class, and most important his health care plan................ anything else you want to know. NOW YOUR TURN

USCitizen...Please don't put words in my mouth! My comments are not directed towards everyone. Please go to the top and read the comments about going back to Africa and so forth. I have not once said anything about McCain, nor did I say that people voted for him because he was white. You don't know my race...you just assumed that I was black because I do not agreee with some of you. So what does that say about you. Yes, I voted for Obama. I voted for him because I thought he was the right choice. If it was about him being black, then Jessie Jackson would be in office (remember he ran)!!! So get your facts together before confronting me.

Comments like its a sad day in America because Obama won the White House or all i can say is to the ones that voted for obomba ,if you ever want a ticket to africa or where ever, we true americans who salute the flag can help you im sure. But as soon as we all come on to give our view its a problem. I love ANDALUSIA too and am sure every African American that grew up there and left love ANDALUSIA as well and it will always be home to all of us, but the bottom line is Andalusia is not willing to make a change that it needs to make nor try something different not long as a BLACK MAN is in charge. Like it or not it is the truth. Am not mad at all but I will respond to other comments that is racists and you all know for yourselves RACISTS comments have been made throughout these comments. Neither Redbone, Tayrjones, or myself started this blog but we will give our people a voice on here. If anyone on here do not like what we are saying then call the Andalusia Star News and tell them to take it down because if truth be told it should have never been up.

Okay Southernbelle…here you go…
1. He is more educated
2. He is concerned about the working class
3. He knows how many properties he owns (remember McCain said he didn’t know…it was 7)
4. He is a dedicated family man (which says a lot about his character and morals…McCain admitted that his first divorce was his fault)
I could go on but I do not owe you an explanation. But for the record...the "spread the wealth" issue that everyone is getting upset about...it won't even affect most of you. Who in Andalusia makes more than $250,000 a year??? I'm sure you don't! Oh, by the way...another reason I voted for him is because I think he is handsome...that really pisses you off doesn't it. What are you going to do...this is America, I have that right! On that note, I'm out!

This is so ridiculous. This whole thing read like a High School Drama class.

Everyone voted the way they voted for their own reasons. It really isnt anyone else's business why they voted the way they did.

America voted for him because they wanted change. For better or worse, its the way it is. Instead of focusing on what happened or didnt happen.. how about we all focus on helping him bring about change? I mean that's the reason we have a democratic society.. You may not like the new President but when its all said and done.. Its the people who are responsible for bringing about change. Our President just gives us the resources to do that.

In 1974 a band called Lynyrd Skynyrd released a song I'm sure everyone from Alabama... hell, everyone who hasn't been in a cave on Mars with a head under the rock has heard. "Sweet Home Alabama" was written in response to "Southern Man" and "Alabama" which were songs recorded by Neil Young. The songs were written in response to the social issues of the time as well as the poor treatment Neil Young received on a trip through the great state of Alabama.

Skynyrd had recorded in Muscle Shoals and met some great people there. Being Southerners themselves, they felt the other side of the story should be told.

However, their music was often misinterpreted. Many people saw only a rebel flag, and this applies not only to their critics but to their loyal followers as well. Some people thought the song endorsed George Wallace (they apparently missed the Boo! Boo! Boo! part after that line) and the song actually made some people hate Neil Young. Young began receiving death threats when he came to Alabama.

The truth of the matter is the song was trying to show a different side of Alabama and was meant to denounce George Wallace and racism, to show that there are good people here. Skynyrd was actually a bunch of Neil Young fans and he liked their music too. Young wrote "Powderfinger" for Skynyrd to record, but they were unable to after that tragic plane crash.

I tell that story to make this point: throughout history people on both sides of an issue have always interpreted things to support their own position. To an extent, that's exactly what happened so often throughout this race and in this "discussion."

Did some blacks vote for Obama just because he's black? Absolutely. Did some white votes for McCain just because he's white? Sure, there are television interviews with voters saying those very things on both sides of the issue.

But just like "Sweet Home Alabama", those people aren't stepping back to look at the real meaning of things and will probably never understand what happened. Some people loved Sknyrd because of that big old rebel flag and some people hated them because of it. Neither side ever bothered to look beyond that and listen to the music to get a clearer picture of the symbolism.

I think both sides here need to step back and get a clearer view of the discussion and what the other side is really saying. Some comments left here are clearly racist, but some have been twisted just like Skynyrd's lyrics.

JBB. About your 1:19pm comment about the country being in bad shape because of the Rep. Party. I don't know if you remember a Dem.President named Jimmy Carter. What were interest rates and unemployment when he left office, and Rep.Ronald Reagan took over? Home interest rates were at 20% and unemployment was 7.4%. Thank God that Al Gore was not Pres. during 911. During the Iran/Contra hearings in the 80's, Oliver North warned of a certain terrorist named Osama Bin Ladin. One Senator from Tn smerked. That Senator was none other than Al Gore. Col. North called his hand and Al Gore was not worried about terrorists of third world counties. Then 14 yrs later, that very group flew planes into the twin towers. What I'm saying is that we can always point fingers at the leaders of this Great Country. Nothing against no one personally, but we need to do what we can to make Our Country better. Pray for ourselves and please pray for our leaders. Thanks.

I will also agree with realist. Thank you. Each person has concerns, each persons concerns voiced here can be misinterpreted. So to each their own. But try to understand where each is coming from. We're all immigrants. At once, more than likely all of our decendants were slaves. So what. We were not. We are free. Lets look ahead. Lets hope that Obama, which clearly was not my choice, will be a president we all respect one day. Let's pray that we all can benefit. Let's not blame anyone for the past and work towards a better future for America. Not another Civil War fought out on the Andalusia Star's comments page. We all have a vote, apparently some voted for Obama, others for McCain. We've got who we've got. Festus himself asked for prayers, that's all. He believed in McCain as strongly as some believe in Obama, what's so wrong with his belief's? Or with mine? Nothing. As long as we all pray for a better country and economy, does it really matter who's running it? I have my own reasons for not wanting Obama. You all have your own reasons for not wanting McCain. So be it. You got Obama. So did I. Now it's time to be American's. regardless of the President. Life goes on....let's hope that ignorance doesn't keep us from being as great of a country as we have been so far.

I have a question for all the people saying whites are rascist because they dont agree with obama. How is it not rascist to vote for someone because they are black, and to say this didnt happen is truly ignorant. Blacks voted 95% for obama. Also, how can a christian vote for obama? I have a book called the Bible that says marriage is between a man and a woman (obama is pro-gay rights). The Bible also says Thou shall not kill (obama is pro-choice).

This is a no win argument. No one is going to admit defeat. If your not a racists, you will be after reading some of these comments. I encourage some of you to go online and type in "increase in black voters". You will find that there was an increase in black voters, and that Obama even wanted an increase in black voters. WHY? Shouldn't he want an increase in all voters. Anyway, just look it up your self. And I would also like to say that, yes, there are still racists people in the world. Whites and blacks, or Blacks and whites. I know some of both.

nurse, you are right I do need help, I just happen to be in the tax bracket that's going to help the less fortunate and I am also in the bracket that pays your salary.Everybody here pays your salary. the rich, the poor, the sick, the newborn, the ones on disablity and the ones on welfare and those on social security and even the dead.
Remember that the next time you say you don't want to give your hard earned money to those faking disabilty and while your sending that check to the nurses association that makes sure you get your 30.00 an hr. Who do you think pays your salary. We all do. People need to wake up and realize that people like you are part of the problem. Maybe we'll have a Global healthcare agreement and ship in those who will work for less and replace you and then a tylenol won't cost 25.00 on our hospital bills. Now wouldn't that help everyone out. Replace those ones that refuse to work for less than 20.00 an hr. And anyone here that owns a business knows what I'm talking about. I don't mind helping the truly less fortunate but I refuse to help the greedy!! And you are wrong, I won't need you. All I would need from a nurse is a wet rag, I'll spend my money on somebody educated not trained. And by the way I did vote for President Obama. People are looking on the wrong end of the spectrum it's not the poor that's the problem, it's the GREEDY!!

ahsgrudfan, First of all no one said all whites was racists for not voting for Obama that is how you feel so it must be true in your mind. I commented because of the comments at the top of the page so if you want to talk about being RACISTS go back to the top and start reading. Hell that is why we came on and started commenting about the remarks that was made. Nothing was said about those comments but as soon as we come on and respond to them then its a problem. If you really and truly have a book called the BIBLE i suggest you read it and find love in your heart for everyone even your PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA.

This comment section is the best thing to ever happen to the Star News. Reading some of these comments have made me LOL (literally) and also made me furious.

It also saddens me. What will it take to unify this country?
A catastrophic event? In the months following 9/11, we were unified. We were ALL proud Americans. Does anyone remember that?

Look at us now. It's pretty sad.

The next time you're at the store and you see a person of different color, hold the door for them.Smile at them. Or simply say "Hi".

How's that for a start?

Like it or not, we're all in this together.

Posted by Ineedtobeheard (anonymous) on November 7, 2008 at 9:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Boy oh boy.....this is so ridiculous. I have read the comments in their entirety. It seems from my prospective that there are a whole bunch of opinions and a whole bunch of namecalling and tempers flaring. In the end, what difference will any of it make. Obama has been elected, whether we like it or not. Time will tell if he does what he promised. I personally don't believe one word any politician says. They tell the people what they want to hear in order to get where they want to be. White or black isn't the issue, though that's what this entire forum has turned into.

The war cannot end overnight. He cannot pull the troops out overnight. The war will be brought here. Is that what yall want?

I'm not going to bash anyone's opinions. The are like A-Holes, everyone has one...Right!

Everyone needs to get over theirselves and stop fighting amongst each other. The race and been run and now it's time for him to put his "money where his mouth is"

Me. You are truly a sad person. You want to rant and rave about the amounts that nurses are being paid and the price of a Tylenol. The amount that nurses are paid is not nearly what they deserve for putting up with people like YOU. As for the price of Tylenol...that is decided by big business and the drug companies! I am not defending myself against the likes of you, but I am trained and educated. I hold a Master's Degree in Nursing. What do you have...my guess is a big fat NOTHING!

Thank you nurse. One of the biggest misconceptions in the world is people thinking you have to be one way or another because someone else pays your salary. You chose to do the job you do because of the genuine care and concern you have for people. Regardless of their ability to pay for their treatment. For the fourteen years I've been working I have always heard ignorant people say "I pay your salary". Really? I don't see your name on the bottom of my paycheck.

Ok Ladies and Gentlemens I have had a lot of fun on this site I must admitt..... talking trash about the out come of the election but now it is time to get serious and come together as one nation. Millions of people have lost their jobs do you know how many children will be effected because of that. Last month alone over 240,000 people lost their jobs and they are predicting 200,000 more each month for the rest of this year. There are more important issues to talk about other than the one we have been debating for the past few days. The bottom line we can be part of the problem or part of the solution. Am sure each and everyone of you who have posted a comment really want to put this Country back where it was when all people were doing fine and the elder and poor both black and white was being taken care of. Barack gave this NATION a beacon of LIGHT when the Counrty was in a state of DEPRESSION. He ENERGIZED the YOUTH of this COUNTRY who is our TOMORROW and gave them HOPE with a simple message of CHANGE and the belief to DREAM that oneday could come true with three simple words "YES WE CAN". So to all that really and truly LOVE this COUNTRY its time for us to put our differences aside and come together as one. And to all I made mad on this site AM TRULY SORRY I was only have fun and if you all are CHRISTIANS than I already know you have forgiven me because GOD HAS.......... Hope you all have a bless and wonderful day. May GOD Bless each and everyone of you. My real name is James Barnes

I am now serving a year in the Middle East as a member of the Armed Service. I left Covington County in 2000 to join the Air Force. I cannot believe that the level of ignorance has not change in the eight plus year I have been gone. In fact, I think the level has increased. And the worse part of it is that I put my life on the line everyday to protect the rights of people to be ignorant (freedom of speech). One of the best choices that I ever made was to leave such a backwards place such as Covington County and have not looked back.

You cannot put all Muslim in the same category. Not all Muslim are violent, just like not all white people are racist, not all black people are criminals, and so on and so on. The majority of African-Americans are expressing their jubilation to have vote for President-Elect Obama because they would be a part of something that no one thought they would see in their life time, an African-American elected to the highest office in the free world. And a majority of the country, 53% to be exact, decided that President-Elect Obama would be that right person to be Head of State. So those individuals that voted for Sen. McCain, get over it.

And for everyone that is saying that their taxes are too high, apparently taxes are not high enough if we are over $2.7 trillion, (that’s $2, 700,000,000,000) in debt to over 20 countries/nations including China. What ever happen to “Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country!” It’s more than routing for Alabama or Auburn on a late November, Sat. (I graduated from Auburn by the way and Troy State)

You do not always have to agree with what the Republicans or Democrats say or do (that’s why I am and Independent) There is not one party that has all the answers, nor in my opinion is there one party better than the other (Although I do appreciate the Republican Party for that Emancipation Proclamation thing.)

No matter what the some ignorant people in Covington County and other parts of the country might think, President-elect Obama is not Muslim, and if so, so what? Even Sen. McCain acknowledges that President –Elect Obama is Christian. He is an American, and has chosen to serve this country, just like I have for better or for worse. You people need to get a life!!!!

I, for one, am tired of these people who may or may not be in the armed forces voicing their opinions about the Covington County people. If you are from Covington County, and you're not proud of it, then keep it to yourself....that's so unfair and unjust to accuse everyone from Covington County of being ignorant. I RESENT THAT COMMENT MR. PHIBE! Your are not perfect....if you didn't want to serve your country, then you were not FORCED to join the services. You do it cause you wanted to or for the $$$$.....Let's get real here. This is really the biggest BS I have ever read, and NO I will not stop reading....and I WILL NOT stop commenting....but people, yall gotta stop being so freakin stupid about things....yes...OBAMA was elected...so be it....not everyone voted for him, and as I said before, everyone has an opinion.....all people are different...and it's crazy that all yall be calling names....STOP IT ALREADY! GROW THE F#### UP!

Posted by phibe1914 (anonymous) on November 7, 2008 at 5:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I have no problem serving my country. And I didn't do it for the money. No where in my comment did I say I was forced to join the service. In fact I have served my commitment and have extended to serve even longer. And that “my friend” is GROWN UP! And you can resent my comment all you want. I am proud to protect your right to resent my comment.

And if you used the education that you received, probably from a Covington County school, I said that you can’t group all people together. I didn’t say all people in Covington County are ignorant (that would be grouping all people together.). Just that it had a high level of ignorant people. And I can say that because I lived in Covington County.

Whatever phibe.....just wanted you to know how I feel. This whole forum is so messed up...it goes from prejudice to racists to slamming....it's totally ridiculous.....sorry if I misjudged you...thanks for serving OUR country...and yes, I attended school in Covington County, have lived here all my life and will without a doubt die here...but I love it here...don't slam me cause I have an opinion. Covington county is not a "BACKWARD PLACE"....I reread your comment and I didn't see where you stated that "I said that you can't group all people together." Nope, didn't see that sentence in there. Obama is the president elect...so be it...I didn't vote for him...and I don't really give a rat's behind if you did.....you serve our country and you do it with pride, but don't forget that we DO have the right of FREEDOM of speech, so don't go preaching to me about what you do.....you don't know me! I was married to a military person as well...so I do know the values instilled in such a person....I'm NOT IGNORANT, and I WILL RESENT that statement as I presume all Covington Countians should!

My comment was as followed:

You cannot put all Muslim in the same category. Not all Muslim are violent, just like not all white people are racist, not all black people are criminals.

I guess I should have included "not all people from Covington County are ignorant." I thought I was clear in making that statement in my second paragraph that you can't group people together because of race, religion, creed, sex, etc. etc.

Just wondering if anyone caught Oprah the other day when she had Will Smith on the show. They were talking about Obama, and Will Smith basically said he was SO excited and yada yada yada, but now it's time to put up or shut up and that now we'll see if he can put his money where is mouth is. Now that he is in power, let's see if he can keep his promises. No, I didn't vote for him, but if he can keep the promises he made and TRULY change our nation for the better, then I'll be in support of him 110%.

My goodness. So many different views and opinions.I am not surprised though. The whole state of Alabama is mostly Republicans. They do have a right to their opinions.Just like the Democrats have a right to their opinions. What needs to take place is instead of looking at the fact that you voted for McCain or Obama, is that your vote did not even matter because Obama was PREDESTINED to be President.GOD has our life already planned out and all we do is do whatever comes next. All we can do is live one day at a time.Obama was going to be president regardless. Forty years ago President Kennedy announced that in 40 years we would have a black president. Not only was Kennedy a Christian God showed that to him.He knew what was going to happen.I hope that we all can put politics aside and come together as a whole and be one big family.God has prepared a place for us.Let's all make it there.Become ONE.And LOVE ALL.

One more thing Let's PRAY for our president. He looked really tired on his press conference yesterday.WE need to pray that GOD keeps him strong and healthy. We all need to be looking at the facts that we are going to have to help him with our views and opinions.Don't think they don't care about what the American people say.Let's remember GOD is the answer. If you don't like the changes then be mad at GOD he is the one doing all of this.If you are mad, then ask GOD to give you an understanding at what is confusing and he will show you your answer.GOD BLESS EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU!!!

yadayadayada...it is what it is....yep, let's see if he can put his money where his mouth is.....it's not the fact that he's black, for God's sake, it seems to be that yall think that's the issue...who gives a squat what color he is....Jeez! It's what he stands for and what he promises to do. If he can deliver, then sobeit...if he can't, then all of you so called Obamians, will eat crow, just like the rest of us who yall are trying to force him down our throats now! Get over yourselves, for Heaven's sake.....live and let live...quit bickering, and behave like you should. I don't care if you are in the service or not. It doesn't matter. If he ends this war overseas, guess what...he will bring it here to the US where we will be defenseless. For all of you who voted for him for that reason, you should have thought about the repercussions of such a drastic act. I don't like the war, I don't think the US had any business going over there in the first place...but that's my opinion. Why do we always have to stick our noses in the other countrys' business? Who knows. Why do we have to rebuild what we helped destroy? Who knows. They sure as hell won't come over here and help us rebuild. Did they send help with the Twin Towers operation....NO. They destroyed it, but we didn't have any help searching day after day, week after week, month after month, for our fallen citizens.....so sad that this world is in such a state of disrepair. It's not ONE person's fault. It's all of us. ONE person can't FIX it.!

SMB. Obviously you do not understand what racism is. I am the furthest thing from a racist. I haven't made any racist comments and I have many friends who are black, white, Hispanic, etc. I do my job everyday because I love what I do. I take care of people the same no matter their skin color...as anyone in the healthcare profession should. Obviously, you should do a little research on what a racist is before you start calling people untrue names. If I were a racist I would admit it. I come from a family of racists and always thought it unfair to judge people based on the color of their skin. However, based on the statement from SMB...I think it is fair to judge people based on their ignorance!

What is so bad in this election is the you believed what they said. You have to go on background.
Obama is for full term abortion and not help for infants born alive.
Obama would not even salute or honor the American Flag
Obama went to an " American Be God Damned" church for 20 yrs.
Obama stated in his book, he would support muslims
Obama had no friends of his past to stand and support him, except the ones who had bad backgounds.
Obama in his own words hates America society.
America's morality is in the pits of Hllllll and this election shows just where the pits are.

I don't hate him, but you will before it's over.
God's allows things to happen when the people forsake His values. America has forsaken the values in which it was established. You will soon see the real Obama.

Last post for this Obama issue for me, because it is getting crazy. Regardless if you are black or white, gay or straight, dumb or smart, he is going to be the President. There is nothing we can do about it. I will stand behind him like I stood behind President Bush. There is no way around it. Right now, I have white classmates who call me friend that have said some terrible things about Mr. Obama because of his skin color. This whole issue on here started off with racists comments and lies about his religion. Nobody has come in here and said anything bad about McCain or Palin. All this all about race and it's crazy. This is why I said Andalusia is behind everyone else, just like the south is behind every other region. This man is trying to heal this country and it's already apparent that some people in here cannot stomach that. I commend some people for actually stating a case. It was well taken. That's the way it should be. We as Americans, need to get our act together, especially in the south. I love the south and wouldn't have it any other way. It's just sad that we are still bickering like this!! BUT IT IS GETTING BETTER!

In my searches I've found that Obama Sr. had 12.5% African in his blood, with the majority of percentile being Arabic. This would be make Barrack Obama Jr. (D-Nominee) 6.25% African blood, 43.75% Arabic, and 50% Caucasian. This would mean the self-proclamed potential 'first African-American' President would in actuality legally be an Arab-American, by standard of Federal Law. In our country it states in order to be legally considered of a certain ethnicity you must have at least 12.5% of that ethnicity's blood in you.

This is a copy and paste of a foreign newpaper on Obama lineage. It's not the only one who states this. American media wouldn't allow this to be told. It would have been racist.

Sweetnannie....well said.. Thanks for standing up for us. As far as all the other narrowminded people on here....as you said, YOU WILL SOON SEE THE REAL OBAMA! I agree....it's not about race. Religion...that's another story. But some people turn a blind eye to that. Christianity is the only way and well, until they see that, they are not seeing what is truly in front of their eyes. No, we can't change what has happened to us with the election of obama (not even worth capitalizing), but we can stand on our beliefs and our faith. Alabama is a great state. We do stand for what we believe in and for all that can't stomach that, sobeit...stay the hell out of here. We don't need your kind. It's just a sad day in America when we now have to abide by the guidance of this person who doesn't believe in God. Goodbye and GOD BLESS ALL WHO BELIEVE IN HIM, SPREAD HIS WORD AND CONTINUE YOUR FAITH...

It's not about race, JayL. Never has been for me. It's about background and values. I have relatives who are black. We are close knit. It's about lies and values. In fact, my first cousin married a black man 28 yrs ago. It was really hard then for her. He treats her a lot better than her first white husband. So there. Most blacks voted because he was black. It's always been an issue for them. So never call whites racist when the blacks are continually being racists. American has come a long way and I hope that this election doesn't divide our nation again in black and white. It should only be values and background. I just don't like the lies.

Sweetnannie, You've definitely DONE YOUR HOMEWORK. You go! So, eat crow whoever said he wasn't Arabic! I believe you know your name!

My mistake. Thank you for the lesson. I'll have to look that one up. Eat crow? Very Juvenile!!

Posted by sweetnannie (anonymous) on November 8, 2008 at 7:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I would never say
"eat crow". I have done a lot of homework these last few months. I had my eyes wide open. I never took anyones words for the truth. I was continually evaluating the issues of each man. Plus all the lies of each man. It all came down to background and values. Obama's life was missing quite a few chapters. He seemed to leave and hide more than most. That brings suspicions. I agree there is nothing to be done now. But I still don't have to support an American hating President. I truly believe he wants to change the Constitution, as it is, and our Bill of Rights. He wants to change our flag and our National Anthem. He's already stated all that. What worries me most is the things he hasn't stated. I shutter to think why true Americans would vote for him. There were so many doubts. Our country's future is at stake, and we were willing to take the risk. So let's just sit back and watch.

Hey Jay this is your boy. I do not see why you are still on here talking with people who do not want to see the light when it is so bright. Like I said before: Millions of people have lost their jobs do you know how many children will be effected because of that. Last month alone over 240,000 people lost their jobs and they are predicting 200,000 more each month for the rest of this year. There are more important issues to talk about other than the one we have been debating for the past few days. The bottom line we can be part of the problem or part of the solution. Am sure each and everyone of you want to put this Country back where it was when all people were doing fine and the elder and poor both black and white was being taken care of. It is no need to keep talking to people who really do not want to hear what you want to say.

I only come on here to read what is being said. This really can be a great thing for Andalusia a place where you can come and voice how you feel without being RACISTS both black and white about issues that is at hand. All of you need to take a step back and check yourself before you can check anybody else. You all have a good nite and continue to keep it real.

ineedtobeheard, you really need to check yourself sound like you are a hater.

Responses to some "facts".

Obama is for full term abortion and not help for infants born alive.

Not exactly true. http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/...

Obama would not even salute or honor the American Flag

An outright lie. 3/4 of the way down the page here http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/... there are photos and videos of him saluting the flag during the pledge. This rumor was started over a single incident.

Obama went to an " American Be God Damned" church for 20 yrs.

His pastor said some pretty harsh things, no doubt, but he also has said some good things and is over all a good person. And I don't agree with everything my preacher says and he doesn't necessarily represent all my beliefs, just as Obama has said about Wright.

Obama stated in his book, he would support muslims

Why shouldn't he support Muslims? Many of them are good people.

Obama had no friends of his past to stand and support him, except the ones who had bad backgounds.

This is just stupid. You mean friends like his former college roommate? http://www.politico.com/news/stories/050...

You didn't see a lot of high profile friends come out and endorse Obama... because he didn't have a lot of high profile friends before he became a Senator.

Obama in his own words hates America society.

Direct quote from Obama's "A More Perfect Union" speech:

"This belief comes from my unyielding faith in the decency and generosity of the American people."

Believe what you want to believe. I also have checked the facts. This has been the problem from the beginning. Too many facts to be checked on Obama. Why? Because there is no history or paper trail of anything he ever did, good or bad. Obama made sure of that. After a while, when do the breaks stop. He is the president of America. You elected him. What happens will be on the shoulders of the ones who voted for him. So let it be. Time will tell all truths. I have heard and checked out all of the above fact checkers. The problem is you also have to check out the checkers. The circle never ends. What goes around comes around. Believe me it will!

Response Part 1

I am responding to several of the comments made since the very first day.I have voted since I was 18 because people died so I can have the right to vote. Served in the Military for 6 years straight out of high school. We are the only country worried about black and white. Maybe if we were UNITED like our name says 911 would have never happened.
For those of you who are trying to figure out Obama's nationality , let me tell you a little secret, there is not a space on the census, or any paperwork for 1/2 Arabic or 1/2 African or 1/2 White. When you are mixed you are considered a minority, Black or African American. We are not given a choice which nationality we want to be. I say we because I am 1/2 Italian and 1/2 Black, but but i didn't have a choice on what nationality I wanted to be.
As far as Andalusia being backwards. Really the whole south is. On positivie note, Andalusia is a good place to live after you are retired. It is also a good place to raise children, Crime rate is very low. I used to reside in Covington County, for 11 years. The cost of living was very cheap at the time but minimum wage was $3.35. I was 22 at the time and I had not made that wage since I was 16. The lady interviewing me at the pecan plant said, "You're in Alabama now lady." Everything is going up but in Andalusia and unless you work at Shaw or Alabama Electric you are not making any money, just minimum wage. Just enough to pay bills and maybe go to the movies. My husband worked on a job for 7 years, starting at $6.50, on the 7th year we decided to move, my husband was only making $7.00. When we moved his starting wage was $9.00 and after 3 months he earned a raise making $12.50. Companies do not pay you what you are worth everywhere, but it sure beats the wages we were making in Covington County. I worked at one time 3 jobs and earned the same my husband did on one job $14,000. I do live in a bigger city now, but you can't even pay bills with a debit card at any of these establishments. No one carries cash like that anymore, I certainly do not. Transportation is horrible. If you do not have an automobile, you are out of luck. Not to offend anyone, but yes I would say the south was backwards.

It embarrasses me that we still even have to have this dialogue. No one in this "discussion" (I use the term loosely) has really brought up the critical issues that should be the focal point of any current debate. Instead of talking about the economy and how to fix it we're talking about whether Obama is a Muslim. Instead of talking about Iraq, people are arguing over race issues. Rather than talk about health care people spew ignorant bile about Obama being the antichrist or some other such nonsense.

You brink up all these issues and you claim you can refute the references I offered as proof, but cite none of your own. I declare shenanigans.

Response Part 2

As far as the tax situation, I would welcome it because I am married but have no dependants. They tax me very heavily. By the time I pay parking, insurance, and taxes, that is half my paycheck. I have to work at least 30 hours overtime to even see something. I have never been on welfare nor food stamps, I have always worked. You know the funny thing is they take medicare out of my paycheck every week, but if I get sick and lose my job, I am not able to apply for medicaid or medicare unless I am pregnant. We do need a change as far as that is concerned.
My opinion on this state that the country is in every time a republican has been in office we go to war, we have very high gas prices, and this country goes into a depression. Now you can say what you want about the democrats, when we hold office it may be a little drama going on but we get the messes cleaned up, and the economy is in very good shape when we had it over. Never has a republican had to clean up any mess the democrats left behind. Now thats just my opinion, I could be wrong.
We all just need to relax and look at the big picture. We are all one nation under God. Black, White, etc. And we need to put this racism behind us and move on because like it or not times are changing and for the better of everyone. We must love all our brothers and sisters in gods eyes. If you are a true christian.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag is an oath of loyalty to the country. It is recited at many public events. US Congressional sessions open with the recitation of the Pledge.

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag reads as follows:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for all."

It should be recited by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform, men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. People in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute.

President Elect Obama has to honor this. One nation under God. Let's see if he does for all it's people.

Don't know what more proof is necessary. Obama made a gaffe one time at a BBQ and forgot to put his hand over his heart during the national anthem, but there is a multitude of photographic evidence that he does salute the flag and say the pledge.

I believe in America and I believe anyone can be anything they want to be in this country regardless of skin color. The election of a black American as President of the United States should put to rest any and all issues regarding Affirmative Action. I did not vote for Obama because I do not think he is right for America. The majority of Americans thought otherwise and the next four years will determine who was correct. I hope everyone that has developed the "Obama mania euphoria" will be able to recall that euphoric feeling in 2010, when you write your tax check on April 15! If you want to see into the future economic landscape of America, check the economy of Germany and how it is run. It is Socialism at its' best. Their citizens pay a Church tax (even if you are an atheist), healthcare tax, unemployment tax, working tax, child tax, house tax, food tax and on and on and on! Germans are even taxed on the AMOUNT OF RAIN WATER that falls on their property!! Everyone also has to pay to go to driver's school if you want to drive (not a bad idea), pay for hunting school, pay for fishing school, pay, pay, pay!!! The majority of Germans pay almost 50% of their wages to taxes. And try to find "civil rights" in their laws. And don't even bring up a charge of police brutality. Gun ownership? Forget it! It is easier to get the keys to Ft. Knox! America is heading in the same direction! God bless us all.
Also in fairness, after reading much Bush bashing, I will give kudos to President Bush for implementing safeguards to keep America terrorist free since Sept. 11. So many people criticize President Bush and have no clue as to the burden of the Office of President of the United States of America. His policies have kept us safe. If we are not safe from terrorism, the state of the economy will be secondary. If we are not able to sit in our theaters, restaurants, churches or schools because of our fear of a terrorist bomb attack, NOTHING else will matter. We ALL need to PRAY for our nation. Trying times like the ones we have only heard about are on the horizon. The 60 something and below age groups are in for a real roller coaster ride. God Bless America

I totally agree with the LoyalAmerican. Obama mania will soon be gone and the honeymoon will be over within six months. Then those people who were part of that will wonder, why didn't I see the truth? I pray that nothing happens to Obama in the meantime. His life shouldn't be in danger. It would do more harm to America if this should happen. He needs a chance to prove his words and show us the so called "change" he has planned. Then let's have a review.

Posted by fancy2167 (anonymous) on November 12, 2008 at 2:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Afirmative Action is something that is given to you because you are a minority. We were not given the presidency, we earned it, and took the lead. After all the oppression of these last 8 years. How can you say you are safe from terrorist, when it's not just muslims we should be afraid of. It is also the streets of america. We used to be able to keep our doors locked and our cars running. Now everthing is under lock and key. The drugs, the murders, the rapes, this is feel are terrorist act by americans. Our soldiers should be on our streets ridding them of drugs and guns and murderers.
We are fighting for freedom in another country, but are we really free in America? We are rebuilding homes that we destroyed in another country, but the truth is, How come we can't build homes in America for all the homeless? Bush gave money for hunger to the same country that caused 911, but funding is very low in America. I am a good christian, but I would have thought twice about giving someone money that just bombed my country. Most homeless shelters serve commodities or donated food. Some programs lose their funding. I say we need to clean up our own home, before we fight and try to tell another country how to run theirs.

Posted by LoyalAmerican (anonymous) on November 12, 2008 at 9:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)

To fancy2167; First I want to thank you for your 6 yr military service. You stated "We were not given the Presidency, we earned it and took the lead." That is precisely my point regarding Affirmative Action. Obama has proven a minority can, in your words, "earn it and take the lead." It is time for every American to EARN it, take care of yourself and take pride in YOUR accomplishments! Also, please research which administrations leave a mess and do not imply that the Democratic party is a party of Doves! WWll, Democrat (D)Roosevelt in office, Korean Conflict/War (D)Harry Truman was at the helm. Does John Kennedy(D), ring a bell regarding Viet Nam? Does Lyndon Johnson (D)ring a bell for continuing the quagmire in Viet Nam? What party was in office when our troops were finally brought home from Viet Nam? Republicans, with Nixon in the White House. He certainly had mega problems, but at least he brought the military home. The next horror we suffered in America was Jimmy Carter(D). He should go down as the absolute WORST President in American history! You want to talk gas prices/shortages, sky high prices for everything and shortages in evey repect? Thank Carter! The good old days are remembered from President Reagan's administration. Most Americans had a rebirth of pride in our Nation! Then first President Bush (R) was saddled with Saddam Hussein and Desert Storm. Then President Clinton(D) had Somalia and Bosnia. You ask are we really free in America? During your 6 years in the military, did you ever go overseas? If you did and still do not appreciate the freedoms we have in America, you must have lived in a bubble! Being the good Christian you say you are, then one would think you would applaud Pres. Bush for giving food to hungry children, no matter their nationality! A child is a child! America has abundance! I am sure you recall the words, "To whom much is given, much is expect." What is wrong with helping people around the world that are being stoned by a husband because your arm or face became uncovered, imprisoned for speaking, denied an education because you happen the be female. America has a place on the global stage and a huge responsibility because of our blessings. Additionally, we do build homes for the homeless, one house at a time. So rather than find fault and not be part of the solution, go volunteer at Habitat for Humanity and help build those homes for the homeless! Start with your own neighborhood and work with the police to rid it of any rogue elements. The majority of thugs roaming American streets are NOT American citizens! Support your country and insist your congressmen secure our borders! By way the South is not backwards. There are narrow minded, entitlement seeking, fault finding, backward thinking people North, East South and West. Stupid is as stupid does no matter WHERE you live. And the GREAT thing about America is,move until you find a part of the country that embraces YOUR ideas of what life should be!!

The Truth About Barack’s Faith

Barack Obama is a committed Christian. He was sworn into the Senate on his family Bible. He has regularly attended church with his wife and daughters for years.
TO: concerned1
But shameful, shadowy attackers have been lying about Barack’s religion, claiming he is a Muslim instead of a committed Christian. When people fabricate stories about someone’s faith to denigrate them politically, that’s an attack on people of all faiths.

Make sure everyone you know is aware of this deception. concerned1 looks as though you are going to have to ask President Elect Obama for forgiveness if you want to make it into Heaven.

How can you be a Christian and be for abortion? I ask for forgiveness every night before I go to bed! DO YOU? I hope that he does do right by this country and I know I am supposed to love and respect everyone but everytime I think about 9/11 it is hard. You and several are right ... there are good and bad in us all but I hope you are right but I am entitled to my opinion just like you are. You make not like mine and I may not like yours..Time will tell though won't it!!!!!!! YOU just cannot be a Christian and feel the way he does about abortion. Hey let's see if he is sworn in on the BIBLE!!!!!!!!

To nfa: Oh please, you don't know Barack Obama any more than you know me. You write words you want to believe. Only God knows the heart within each of us. Ask Obama's forgiveness if one wants to get to Heaven you say! Whoa there Nellie! There is only ONE Messiah and Barack Hussein Obama is NOT HIM!! I'll give Obama the benefit of my doubt. But when he decides to go along with stem cell research by harvesting babies just for their stem cells, begins to dismantle our military, promotes abortion, attempts to silence free speech and attempts to ban our right to bear arms, closes Gitmo and brings all those terrorists onto American soil, then I'll know my gut was right. Then in approximately 1460 harsh days from Obama's inauguration, patriots can right the wrong done to America!

I wish that people had decided to vote for experience and knowledge rather than race alone. I found it so disheartening to see people on television completely fold when they were asked why they voted for Obama. They had no clue and were even getting McCain's policies confused with Obama's. There was such racism in this election and it was not on behalf of the white man. All I heard the day he was elected was how history had been made. The first African American President was elected today. Well, I hate to break the news to you all, but he is biracial. I cannot believe that America chose to elect a Muslim who is a rookie politician. Come on people..........history will be made.......read the book of Revelations.

Where is the truth in Obama? I have searched and searched everywhere. I couldn't find it. You choose to believe what you hear and make it the truth. His whole life is undocumented. No record except for the last few years.
He wouldn't even allow his college and law school transcripts to be released. So what's he hiding? Will you tell me that's the truth too. The unheard and the unread. How naive this nation has become. Truth becomes what you want it to be after a while, but that's not documented truth.

I think deep inside we DO know the truth. We are unable to wrap our minds around it because it is too scary! This entire election was developed by the radical left in an effort to promote their agenda. Barack Obama has not had an original thought in his life. By is own admission the likes of Karl Marx shaped his mind. He will be a puppet for the left wingers that want to destroy America. Grassroots is the solution. There are 58 MILLION Americans that DID NOT vote for Obama. United we stand, divided we fall!

You need to read your newspapers and listen to the televsion. You need to get your facts straight about President Obama's views on abortion. People like you who don't understand and comprehend and take a little bit of a statement and draw your conclusion is being wrong. You are wrongfully accusing an innocent man because you do not know the facts. I know your minister has told you all this concoction of a story. I can't believe ministers are literally getting up in church telling their congregations these lies. You need to be taught how to be saved from your sins. Oh yes, Obama has to do right by the country because he is BLACK but Bush has been in office for 8 years, during 9/11 and what kind of right have you seen come from him. Absolutely NONE but who complained.

I don't have to agree with you because just like you I can voice my opinion and you don't have to like it, and my minister didn't tell me anything. I know how to be saved from sins. I don't bash you, but you bash "people like me". Believe it or not people like me even have a TV and I do watch and read and I am still entilted to feel the way I do. Like I said time will tell and we will see. I do hope he does something positive for this country but I guess we just have to wait and see what happens, so get off my case and get on someone else's!!!!!!

And for everybody that's on this Obama is for abortion issue, it doesn't matter if he is for abortion or not. Roe vs. Wade establishes that abortion is leagal. And it is up to the Supreme Court to overturn that decision. Seven of the nine Supreme Court justices, including the Chief Justice were put in place by an Repulican President. In addition, the Republican Party until two years ago own the House of Representatives, and for the pass eight years have owned the White House. And yet abortion is still legal, so it's not like a Republican President can/will do anything different that a Democratic President on the abortion issue.

If people would do some resaerch and get their facts together, alot of this arguing would cease and we could move on.

And finally to the stat that 95% of blacks voted for Obama, Did anyone look into what percentage of blacks are democrats. Did anyone look into what percentage of blacks are democrats? It's 93%
