Man hit with animal cruelty charges
Denney, 43, previously ran ‘SAFE’ animal protection program
Published Wednesday, November 19, 2008
An Andalusia man has been charged with cruelty to animals after five dead animals and nearly 20 others were found neglected in Red Level Tuesday.
Ronnie L. Denney, 43, faces the misdemeanor charge after the owner of the property Denney was leasing in Red Level found the animals and reported Denney to the authorities.
“Denney had been running a so-called non-profit organization called SAFE or Save Animals from Euthanasia on (State) Hwy. 55,” Covington County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Wesley Snodgrass said. “He had since moved his organization from 55 South to Crowell Lane in Red Level.
“A private citizen happened upon what appeared to be the remains of a dead dog on the property and filed charges against him for the underfed and wounded animals,” he said.
Reports indicate there were four dead dogs and one dead cat found when law enforcement arrived, as well as more than 20 other dogs.
Additionally, it appeared the animals had died as a result of starvation and neglect.
A person commits the crime of cruelty to animals if, he or she intentionally or recklessly subjects any animal to cruel mistreatment; or subjects any animal in his custody to cruel neglect; or kills or injures, without good cause, any animal belonging to another.
Denney was released on a $1,000 bond, and if convicted, could face a fine of up to $1,000 and/or imprisonment up to 6 months.

I hope every one will be watching out for dog fights in Covington Co .I believe it is going on . I saw a man walking down the street behind the court house with 2 bull dogs on a leash ,A car came up and he placed them in the back seat .
Also on Snowden drive [on the right going toward Moore Rd.] a man was hitting a bull dog with a stick as I was passing by yesterday .
A dog would be a best friend

I am a very big animal lover and I hope they will treat him as bad as he did the animals. I hope that people will stop and take notice of how animals are treated and one time I read a story and it said IF A DOG COULD TALK WOULD HE REALLY BE MANS BEST FRIEND? The trouble is that people want a pet and they are cute and cuddly but they grow up and then they are thrown to the side of the road or worse. I am one of them that will report animal cruelity in a heart beat. But in our system they will slap him on the hand and out he will be. I hope they throw the book at him.

This INFURIATES me. I AM an avid animal lover. I have dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, and I love each and every one of them. I can't stand someone that abuses animals. The dogs, cats, etc., depend on us to take care of them, for their food, housing and TLC. They don't ask for much, and for someone to be so cruel to them is just outrageous. I remember a while back when Denney was still on 55 that I heard a rumor that he had been shut down because he had too many dogs. He was closed for some time, but then he reopened. My husband and I camp on the river near this place and the dogs would yelp all into the night. Now it makes me wonder if he was starving them as well.
I'm proud of this concerned neighbor/citizen who alerted authorities as to his neglect. If he doesn't intend to take care of them, then he shouldn't have a business stating that he will. SAFE (Saving animals from euthenasia) should be just that, but all the animals that are brought to this establishment MUST be taken care of.
I hope this man gets everything he deserves. Yes, I would like to see him go without eating until he absolutely STARVES to death in a sense of the word, just so he would know how those poor dogs and cats feel that have been abandoned and left in his care. How is that any better than euthenasia. I don't agree with Euthenasia, but sometimes it is for the best.
Throw his butt in jail, fine him heavily, $1,000.00, that's not even close to enough! Six months in jail. Wow. He'll serve that, if he even gets it, and then rent or lease some property somewhere else, and start all over again. He needs to be stripped of any dealings whatsoever with animals, he shouldn't even be allowed to have ONE!
That's all!

$1,000 ??!!
This infuriates me..... My husband and I have saved 2 dogs from the Shelter in Andalusia.. It is absolutely insane that someone can pay $1000 and get away with killing 5 animals and endangering the lives of 20 others.
How sad our world is..

rodg- I believe you should turn the person in that you saw hitting their dog. Contact the Andalusia Humane Society or Andalusia Police Dept or Sherriff's Dept.

There is nothing I HATE more than animal cruelty.

Landlord or not... There is no sence in this happening to these animals. Even if the two were having difference this is no reason for any animal to be without food or water. I think that it should at least be $1,000 per animal plus spend some time in jail or at least make him do community service at the local animal shelter.

I wasn't talking about him directly.
I'm saying regardless of who it is.. $1000.00 for killing animals is ridiculous. Our laws for animal cruelty should be harsher than that. I live and work in Red Level and I've never even heard of him or his organization.
Apparently the Police Officers felt the animals were being abused/starved.. Whether its his fault or the land owners.. Somebody should be held responsible..
And it should be more than a $1000.00 fine.

some of the animals could have been in bad condition when left with s.a.f.e., i know the denney's have operated for many years... down by the yellow river toward florala, i even adopted a dog 2 different time from their kennel and the animals always came first for the denney's!

bla bla bla dont matter the paper said they were dead animals on the property. no excuse for that . sad that some one gets a slap on the wrist for this. should be treated as a felony.....oh ya the paper gets its facts from the police dept..

you need to get the facts apparently .the land has been "sold" since The Sheriff himself stated in a newscast a few weeks back when they tried to do this before that the Dennys had not broken any law,but hey everyone has to say what they have to say.....so when it come to "facts" you must not know all the facts bama dude.

Oh please give us a break. It don't matter what he did or didn't pay if he couldn't take care of the animals turn them over to the human society. There isn't any excuse for him not to feed them animals. Bamadude did the Denny's look hungry. I am just wondering? I can not and will not except the fact that it was a landlord/tenant fight. If you know so much explain to us why that would keep them from feeding the animals or at least take time to bury them? NO MATTER WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH THE LANDLORD THE ANIMALS STILL SHOULD HAVE BEEN FED!!!!!!!!!!!

Best way to say this..... goes a little something like this!
If this is just a fight between the landlord and Denny, then let it be that, if this is a true case of animal cruelty, then treat it as that! Dont try to write off one because of the other!! I am sure that this isnt over with, and if done properly that they are surely not thru with investigating this at all!! I do agree with one thing though, if he is found guilty of animal cruelty, then a thousand dollars does not even cover what he should be charged for this, and 6 months? What he may stay in 3 weeks tops then let him out on good behavior. gee you have to love our judicial system sometimes!!
I know that someone out there will know me by my name, and I dont care, I am not ashamed at all to say this, so if it offends you, dont read it! But if you agree, the speak your mind!! I love my animals more than I do some of my family!...lol
It is nothing to get up and find a box on my steps where someone has left an animal for me to raise!! I am a animal lover, and I do take them in , have them checked by a local vet, then I fight to find a home for them! I never have trouble finding homes, because people that know me, know that the animal that they get from me has been treated and taken care of!!
I AM MY OWN ADOPTION AGENCY, AND I PAY FOR IT ALL OUT OF MY OWN POCKET!! no help from anyone.
So lets sit back and see where this goes, then lets see where it takes Mr. Denny.

bama dude if your so "protective" of denney why dont you give him a place to put his dog abuse shelter and maybe you can make sure the animals are not neglected, and by the way if denney is soooo into saving animals why dont he have a REAL shelter instead of a bunch of pins located in a remote area on a un-occupied lot in the middle of the woods..sounds like a place just to hide animals and get donated money from people who truly care about animals!!! land owner battle or not the important thing here is the animals. they need more then a pin and a bucket of water in the woods.and from what i KNOW theres not even running water on the land!

I have one. There were 5 small defenseless little pups thrown off down Padgett Road sometime today or maybe even last night. These pups barely had there teeth. People if you don't want your dogs to have puppies get them spayed or neutered and for God's sake stop throwing the poor babies off and leaving them to mercy of the world. I know that this is beginning to be a major problem for some of the homeowners down that way. They can't take them to pound due to the fact they are out of the city's jurisdiction and they can't come pick them up. Luckily 3 people got involved and the puppies were taken in. I have dogs and cats and I love them as they are family members. Enough is enough if you don't want the animals then get them fixed. And as far as the gentleman who was arrested this is definitely not his first time of being held accountable for such an act and this time he should be charged more than $1000 and more time in jail. Thanks to the landowner there in Red Level he has saved more animals lives by turning this man in and I for one would like to say thankyou very much for doing what you did.

BamaDude, let me see if I have this right. It is better to starve a dog to death than to euthanize?
It seems simple to me. Did law enforcement find staving/neglected dogs or not? If they did, then the accused was not caring for the animals. Maybe the Denny's are hoarders. Maybe they have good intentions but really can't/don't care for the animals they take in.
I'm with patwilliam, rabrenhill, and others who are outraged by any act of animal cruelty. The possible penalties are simply laughable. Maybe BamaDude will be a character witness for the accused and help out with the $1000 fine if Mr. Denny is convicted.

Cannot say I am an "animal lover," but starving animals? Then to have done this under an title as "SAFE-Save Animals from Euthanasia" is just plain wrong. I guess he wanted to kill the animals the humane way, by starving them. It's just wrong. It really doesn't matter who found the animals. What actually matters, in my opinion, is what was happening to the animals. A $1000 fine is way too low. Maybe he should pay the $1000 fine and also be starved for a week.

FACT:law enforcement went to the land and photographed dead animals on the land. bama dude you must hate animals.im pretty sure the county would have not issued a warrant if they were not enough facts . the deputy himself had pics of dead animals laying on the land . and bama dude get your facts the bond was a $1000 but the fine only carrys a $1000 max and i agree that it should be $100,000 and 10 years in jail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!having a bunch of animals in a pin in the middle of a woods on a un-occupied lot with no running water should be against the law within its self none the less he will just get a slap on the wrist and continue to do this. and like i said bamadude WHY DONT HE HAVE A REAL SHELTER ??? HES HIDING ABUSED ANIMALS IN THE WOODS, BOTTOM LINE!!!!AND YOU A PURE ID10T IF YOU THINK THAT YOU WOULD HAVE SEEN DEAD DOGS THERE YESTERDAY AFTER DENNEY MADE BAIL.!

Well said andyman well said. I want to know something bamadude who are you and why are you fighting so hard against what is said about the Denny's? Hey this is Sherrie Phillips all over again. NOTHING WILL EVER COME OF THIS CASE OR HERS. Andyman is right the law took pics of the dead animals. Bamadude what about that? The facts have been said and proven and why are you fighting for them? Or are you a member of the family? Come on now tell us the truth. Why can't you say hey the Denney's were wrong they should have fed and water the animals. The animals couldn't help what the landlord was doing and the Denny's could have help the animals. I stand up for the landlord for turning them in and he must be a good person to let the law see where the animals were starved and some dead. The smell would have been bad enough. Bamadude one last question and I do hope you will answer this. Did the landlord keep the Denny's from buring the animals? If so then they would be bad. So tell us why the people you are fighting so hard for couldn't even take the time to bury the dead animals.

This is a sad and bad deal here; however, we are missing the BIG BIG picture. The laws in this state need to be changed. I remember signing a paper a few years back to up these charges and the fines. Nothing has come of it either. As far as I know they were turned in and dismissed. We all need to contact ALL of our lawsmakers and tell them how we feel about these slaps on the wrist laws that are on the books surpose to be protecting our animal friends. The poor pony that was dragged behind the truck the dog was set on fire and the list goes on. Some of these crimes were committed by our youth. They need to be taught better through eductation that animals do have feelings and they do hurt and bleed just like we do. The ones that use it for sport such as dog and cock fighting should be thrown in jail and fined heavily. GET THE LAWS CHANGED to reflect our feelings. I realize some of you will think I'm an idiot but this is my opinion.

Sad but again here everyone goes with their vicious remarks!
Animals are better destroyed than left to starve. I would rather see people shoot unwanted animals than have them suffer. I am a big animal lover. I have fish, birds, dogs, cats, and horses so don't go hating on me because I think that way.
I do not know the whole story so I for one will not act like a fool running my mouth. Bad character folks, just bad character!!! Makes you just as bad as the person doing the bad deed.
Folks, put a bullet in it's head before you let it suffer!! Be HUMANE!

Oh you really take the cake Beautifulme you really take the cake. Let me see now you will hug Sherrie Phillips and don't know her and now you will put a bullet in an animals head. You are a christian. Lord don't let me go where you are going. I guess when I get more down and can't get up dued to my fighting for my life I will have my husband call you and let you come over and put a bullet in my head when I can't go any further. Well it is almost here so I will tell the good Lord above to forgive you and let you put me out of my misery. All I have left is my opion and let me tell you my animals have been like family to me. Wiped my tears away and gave me strenght when I didn't want to fight anymore. Who was there for them poor animals to wipe their hunger and pain away? If you can't take care of them then there are places they could have taken them to.

Kathy, my dear....People and animals are totally different. I am an ACTIVE member of the ASPCA. I used to would think that it would be horrible to put a bullet in an animal to keep it from starving but if you do your research then you will discover how many millions upon millions of animals are left do die due to neglect and starvation. There are proven far more animals than good homes for them. It is virtually impossible to get homes for even half of the animals that end up in the shelters that are put down. Do you not know that the shelters kill the animal???? I beleive that a bullet is far better than the shot the inject them with that takes up to 10 minutes to kill them. Watch the videos of animlas being put to sleep. You will see, that is more cruel than a bullet.
Killing people is of course a ridiculous thing to even mention. Completly different than an animal. Human life is far more valuable than an animal. Don't go off hating me now because I have however done my homework on these matters and I firmly believe in humanly putting an animal down rather than letting it suffer to the fullest extent of starvation...death. Come on, how could you not agree?? That is the scary part that people don't see this. And I love animals, I would do anything possible to save one but I would in no case ever let one suffer!!! I would definatly put a bullet in its head before that happend!! I would love to take in all the unwanted animals and help care, love them, and find them new homes but that is impossible. I have just as many animals as my husband will let me bring in already!
I am active in the aspca and I help relocate and rehabilitae animals. I keep the petitions going around and send them to our state leaders. I do my part in helping keep animals from suffering from neglectful people!! Do you do yours? Join up with us and help if you aren't already!! You will be rewarded greatly for your participation.
I stoped breeding performance horses due to the fact that the horse industry is becoming over populated. "I thought, why raise horses when there are so many going to slaughterhouses already??" So now I rescue horses and re-train them and rehome them.
So you see Kathy, I am a christian and because I would not let an animal suffer does not make me a non christian. I have a big christian heart and attitude and I try my best to show it in every way. I would definalty help any human being, even ol' sherrie phillips.
So, kathy, you can think it is a horrible thing to rather see a bullet in an animal than to find it dead from starvation but I can promise you that anything I believe in and speak of is because I DO MY HOMEWORK on it all and I know as much as I possibly can about the situation!!
Posted by BeautifulMe (anonymous) on November 24, 2008 at 1:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)
And let me say Kathy, so you don't think I actually go around shooting animals that I have never had to put a bullet in ones head to keep it from starving. I somehow manage to succesfully rehome the animals I rescue.
Send me your email and I will give you so much info on this matter that it will blow your mind. I am sure you will have a heartbreaking moment when you learn all I know about it and then you would rather see someone humanly put an animal down than have it tied, caged, and starving to death.

Like I said previously.. Whether he did or didnt do it wasn't my point.. My point is that anyone that abuses animals and is FOUND GUILTY should pay more than $1000.00 fine.
Its not about a hang em attitude.. Its about the Animal Abuse Laws in this nation.. You can't tell me that its perfectly justifiable for someone to starve an animal to death or beat them horribly and only pay $1000.00.

In 2007, the 'artist' Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, took a dog from the street, tied him to a rope in an art gallery and began starving him to death.
For several days, the 'artist' and the visitors of the exhibition watched, emotionless, the shameful 'masterpiece' based on the dog's agony, until eventually he died.
Does THIS sound like art to you?
But this is not all... the prestigious Visual Arts Biennial of Central America decided that the 'installation' WAS actually art, so Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel action for the Biennial of 2008.
Let's STOP HIM!!!!!

While you are on the subject ,someone needs to push your new commissioners to get some type of animal control laws established and maintained. Too many being dropped of in the county and then they as well being killed. The lack of this action is causing more to suffer than needs to. Escambia county has a law ,and someone to pick them up, and take to the pound. Not that I agree , on them having to be put down at the shelter. But something needs to occur to help with the problem within the county, such as licensed, fines etc.

Oh Beautifulme, I to am with the ASAPC and the Humane Society and I also have seen the vet put them down and even held them in my arms and cried as they took there last breath. I to have raised yorkies and show babydoll persians. I have been very active with this until my health got so bad. But I do try to help anyway I can. So you see I have given out my email address and if I had yours I could send you enough on it to blow your mind away. I have taken in stray animals and help them to get better and then find homes for them. When a company across from where I lived moved and left about 20 or more starving cats I went down there twice a day and fed them animals. When I was split wide open from the collarbone to the bottom and then on both sides but I would ask the good Lord above to help me make that walk everyday. I know about the animals and how people will get them when they are babies and then get tired of them and dump them. I don't hate anyone and I wish I was rich enough to help all the starving animals. I can not and I know people everyday who don't mind killing and animal. I don't have the heart for it. I am sorry I don't mean to pick on you I really don't. I just hold my animals and do the best I can.

I have my own issues with the Shelter in Andalusia.. Mainly, the hours.. Has anyone tried to adopt animals from there? I have. I had to take off work just to go up there to pick up my dogs.. They are only open from like 10-2 (with a 1 hour lunch) and closed on Saturdays.. Its almost impossible to adopt from there.. I've been to alot of shelters in the surrounding counties and they are open all day and on Saturday..
Maybe instead of euthanizing the animals, they could stay open a little longer!

I hope I never have to go to court and have some of you against me!! but then There are some here that I would want fighting for me, because you have spoken the truth about this situation and you stand your ground on it!! This is to be true, if Mr. Denny had all intentions to be a safe house for these animals, why didnt he have the proper permits ( or did he) and why was this off out in the middle of the woods? IF he was totally honest about taking care of these animals, then he wouldnt have acted as if he was trying to hide them. If I was trying to adopt them to save their lives, I would want the public to have access to the property where they could see the animals!!
But who is going to adopt a starving animal? someone like me, because I am just that way, most people want the fat happy healthy ones, so they wont have to do anything but continue to feed and have them, not me!! I feel that all of them deserve a fighting chance to live, and I stand by my words of saying that You will never catch me "putting an animal out of their misery by shooting them" like a previous person stated! just because they are starving! I have had a many of pet that I acquired when they were to the point of near death, and I took care of them, and they are the best animals I have ever had in my LIFE!!!
Better laws do need to be amended so this doesnt continue to happen! If they can waste tax money on stupid court cases ( hint * hint) why not take the time to do something for a good cause!
