Straughn, Opp sit at top of football region standings

Published Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Two Covington County football teams have played well enough so far this season to secure playoff spots in November.

The Straughn Tigers (7-0, 5-0 in Class 3A, Region 1) and the Opp Bobcats (5-2, 5-0 in Class 4A, Region 2) sit at the top of their regions.

This Friday night, Straughn will travel to face T.R. Miller in a well-contested game.

Straughn has had only one away game so far this season, defeating Cottage Hill 31-30.

Miller’s record at home is 3-0 this season, having won all four of their other away games.

Opp will face off against Elmore County this week at home.

Elmore County has the same region record as Opp, but the Panthers have won one more away game so far this season.

The four other teams in the county, Andalusia (1-6, 1-4 in Class 4A, Region 1), Red Level (3-4, 1-4 in Class 2A, Region 1), Pleasant Home (3-4, 1-4 in Class 1A, Region 2) and Florala (1-6, 1-4 in Class 1A, Region 2) will not be making it to the playoffs this year.

Andalusia, along with Hillcrest, sits at the bottom of its region with a record of 1-4.

This week, the Bulldogs will travel to Evergreen to take on Hillcrest.

Both Pleasant Home and Florala both have the same 1-4 record in their respective region and both are facing opponents that have won one more than two games in region play.
