Man threatens to kill his mail carrier

Published Wednesday, September 24, 2008

A Red Level man pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal charges that state he threatened to kill his mail carrier.

Red Level Police Chief Howard West said Matthew Leo Kelley, 39, entered the plea in Montgomery before U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles S. Coody.

“Kelley had made threats to the postal worker that basically said he was going to kill the carrier,” West said. “Kelley was upset because his Social Security disability check had been returned due to an insufficient address.”

West said the postmaster contacted his department, who then in turn, reported the incident to postal inspectors who are federal officers that work postal-related crimes.

“We take all threats seriously,” West said. “There are laws that one has to abide by. You can’t just make idle threats.”

Kelley has an extensive criminal history of drug-related and property crimes.

Alabama Parole and Probation and River Falls Police Department also participated in the investigation.

It is unknown when Kelley will be sentenced for the crime.

Would this be considered a case of " reverse going postal" ?

I agree with you jennygirl. There was no tape or video basically the postmaster words against Matthew Leo Kelleys wife. No judge wanted to hear the real story of what really went on. But I can guarantee you Matthew you never said the word I will kill my mail man or murder him. He simply wanted to know why after 7 months he delivered the ssi check to the same adress with no problem and his stimulus check was also returned who wouldn't be upset espeacially when they live on a fixed income and there check gets returned. There are 3 mailboxes all together you can find any three of the recipients mail in any three of the boxes. So the Red Leve ost Office needs to get there business affairs in order. To this day the mail man still delivers mail to the address he so called the wrong address of Mr. Kelleys. So he just simply wanted to know why and how to correct the problem. So was the address really the problem?

Yes Mr. West there are laws we have to abide by. But we also have constitional rights. Such as our freedom of speech. Also the charge of extensive drug related crimes negative. Extensive means lenghty or a great extent. This means repeated. I know of two times he has ever been convicted. This is not a criminal history. So through the years he has not had a lenghty criminal history. Other charges if that is what was being talked about he beat them he was never convicted so therefore those can't not be included in your word extensive. You are innocent til proven guilty. But excuse me innocent til proven guilty went out the window as well as our freedom of speech. Which is amendemt one freedom of speech. In this town it seems once you get in trouble the law looks at you as you are a trouble maker all your life and never gives you room for change.

Matthew Kelley is a great husband and a wonderful loving father. His family has went through tremendous hurt due to the unfairness of the law and the judicional system. My son will never forget watching his father having a gun to to the back of his head and knees in his back while his father lay sleeping. Nor having a gun pointed at him coming up the hall. He is only six. He has no trust for Covington Counties finest nor any other officers surrounding. It isn't right to judge a man with out hearing the whole story called the truth. Isn't it only right he had a right to express his freedom of speech. Gossip has hurt this family. It has caused great pain.

Matt plead guilty because he felt the system was unfair and sought to hang him no matter what. So he did what he felt was best. He plead to amendment 8 to protect people from unusal punishment.

Matthew Kelleys,
Loving wife,
Katina Kelley

I also would like to say the andalusia star news should not print information that they do not have the complete information on. Pen and paper hurts lives of innocent people espeacially the children. They say the pen and paper is the second dangerous tool. The first is the mouth which some people need to learn to keep it closed more and listened a lot more so there wouldn't be misunderstandings.
