Car flips, 2 hurt

Published Friday, April 24, 2009

A Friday afternoon accident sent two unidentified females to the hospital after a car overturned, trapping one of them inside.

The accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. on Johnson Road in the Gantt Community.

“From what it looks like, the Mustang ran off the dirt road and overturned,” said an Alabama State Trooper spokesman. “Two people were trapped inside, and one had their arm trapped underneath the vehicle.”

It took a team of law enforcement and emergency medical personnel to lift the car off of the trapped victim’s arm.

Both were transported to Andalusia Regional Hospital for treatment.

Law enforcement officials say the driver was speeding and text messaging when the accident occurred.

Representatives from the Heath and Gantt volunteer fire departments, the Covington County Sheriff’s Office, Gantt Police Department and the Alabama State Troopers responded to the accident.

This is a prime example of why teens do not need a cellphone except on trips away from home and I mean long trips, not to school or town. The parents of this teen are the real guilty party in this instant. I fully back a law being passed to prohibit the use of cellphones, iphones, etc., while driving. If a call is important, pull off the road and make the call. I've had kids/grown-ups both almost hit me while talking on a cellphone. Just my opinion.

Both of you said it well. Ya'll are so right. I have seen kids that aren't even old enough to drive and they are always on cell phones. I am like the rest if you need to make a call stop and wake up parents.I am so proud these two weren't hurt.
I tell you it burns me up to see that young kids walking around on cell phone and I even told my stepkids you are stupid for paying for them to have them.Take the phones and IPod's (or what ever they are) out of their ears and make them talk to you instead of friends on phone.Oh yea they caught our 12yr granddaughter on the phone at all hours in the morning and then won't to punish her.OH NO YOU NEED PUNISHING YOU ARE PAYING FOR THE DARN THING.Needless to say my stepdaughter and them are mad at me. So be it.

This is again, a prime example of the use of cells/iphones, while driving. There really does need to be sort of law against this, and yes I too agree that if a call is important enough to have to use the phone while you are driving, then pull over and make it...then resume your trip. Thank God the girls were seriously injured or someone else wasn't in this instance.
