Please everyone, obey the leash laws

Published Wednesday, August 12, 2009

I live on Youpon Drive, between Green Acres and Albritton Road. This past weekend at 3 a.m., my daughter heard a dog run across our back deck and bark once. The next morning, we found our beloved 19-year-old cat dead. She was a sweet, old girl and she did not deserve to die such a violent death, especially in a day and time when we have leash laws. Our other cats are young enough to climb a tree; but, our oldest was too old to defend herself or run away.

You may ask why she was outside if she was so old? It’s where she had lived her entire life. She did not like to be in the house and she never left our deck. She was happiest outside and only in recent years did she get to where she could not run. Besides, with the leash law we have in Andalusia, we did not worry about a dog hurting our cats.

Please, please abide by the leash law, do not leave your dog out at night and keep them somewhere they cannot escape.

No one should ever have to find a family pet mauled from a dog attack.

Although I FULLY agree with the leash law....and I am sorry that your beloved pet was a victim of someone breaking that law....and your cat never left your yard....Cats should also be included in this law (it may be)....Too many times we have cats come to our yard....obviously loved cats...but cats out on their own, free to roam the neighborhood....they leave footprints on our vehicles, use our sandbox as litter pans and sometimes get into the trash and hair on everything....these are not stray cats because I know where most of them live. All pets should be kept confined to your own property at all times. We live in town and even here cats outside is not a good idea....we have a bobcat and a fox in our neighborhood...and they love cats....we see them occasionally and a cat usually goes missing when they are around. Pet owners...please keep all pets safely secured either in your home or yard.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. I own a very large dog and I walk her on a leash daily. She lives inside but when she goes out she is confined to the back yard, however whenever we walk around Andalusia we are constantly followed by other dogs not on a leash. They bark at her and chase us, sometimes for blocks.

Often times the unleashed dogs are small dogs that pose no real threat to my dog. She is very docile and gentle, however, the possibility always exists that one of these little dogs could run up and provoke my dog by biting her and in that situation I'm quite sure she could kill or at least seriously injure a little dog with a single bite before I could do anything about it. And I shouldn't have to do anything about it.

If you own a dog you should be responsible enough to keep it confined to your yard so it cannot harass passing pedestrians or be run over by cars on the street.

You grief will not go unshared as the community as a whole feels the sorrow for the loss of a beloved pet. It was unforseen and sometimes things just happen as acts of nature. When I was a small boy I had a large dog, my elderly neighbors had a little dog named "Brownie" that was their closest companion and part of their everyday lives. One summer afternoon my dog mauled Brownie in a split second
before anyone could do anything, the loss was horrible for everyone that day, that was back in 1959 and I recalled it clearly when I read about your cat. The neighbors died decades ago but I'll never forget the pain shared by everyone that day.

It's truly amazeing how dog's reflect their owner's behavior.

My dog is white! Just because Obama is president doesn't mean you can discriminate against my dog.

lookeyhere................

man do you have some issue or what!!! Have to say I have never heard anyone compare the president with a dog ( donkey yes, dog no) you are something else!!

I am sorry for the loss of your animal, I understand the way you feel about this. What we need is a clinic here that offers discounts on spaying/neutering services, if we had something like this where people could afford the services, then maybe there wouldnt be as many strays running around. People just dont want to take care of that "cute little animal" when it begins to grow up, gee people did you expect them to stay small forever?

I watched a man stop in a local neighborhood this week, open his car door and throw two kittens out in someones yard, I call the police dept to report it......lets just say I have two new kittens in my home now!! I REMEMBER YOUR TAG NUMBER AND THE MAKE AND MODEL OF YOUR CAR DUDE...............

Blondie: Thank you for rescuing the kittens. I have rescued quite a few animals and ended up giving several of them a forever home. Covington County absolutely needs a lost cost spray/neuter clinic. Unfortunately, in my experience, there are a lot of people who can afford the surgery but just don't bother with having it done. It is usually easy to find homes for cute kittens and puppies. The problem is that those kittens and puppies grow up and produce more kittens and puppies and the cycle continues. Please don't even get me started on people who do not give dogs heartworm preventative when it is a for gone conclusion that any dog spending any amount of time outside in the South will get heartworms.
Again, thanks for rescuing the kittens. As for the man who dumped them... my genteel Southern raising prevents me from writing what I really would like to write. That and the fact that the post would be deleted.

So sorry for the loss of your furry family member. It's never easy, especially when it could have been prevented. Blondie and WAtidefan, thanks for your rescue efforts. So many times folks get pets without thinking about the true time and energy that goes into caring for them. Then come the unexpected kittens who don't deserve a horrible life simply because a former owner decided to dump them somewhere instead of taking them to a shelter.
