DA: 3 firings weren’t political
Published Tuesday, August 18, 2009
Two employees who were dismissed from the district attorney’s office Monday said in a written statement released Tuesday that they were terminated for political reasons, an allegation the DA has denied.
Brett Holmes and Brandy Smith, a former investigator and former secretary in the DA’s office, along with a prosecutor, Grace Jeter, were dismissed Monday morning. Jeter has declined comment.
In a written statement released late Tuesday, Holmes and Smith said, “It has been told by Greg Gambril that we were terminated because of a budget crunch caused by the loss of certain grant monies. Even though she was the most experienced prosecutor on staff, Grace Jeter was told she was being terminated because of the loss of grant funding from the Office of Prosecution Services. Grace Jeter was not paid from that grant nor from any other grant.
“Investigator Brett Holmes was the second most tenured investigator in the office and his sole responsibility was aiding in the preparation of the prosecution of all drug cases,” the statement said. “The prosecution of those drug cases is funded almost exclusively by the Byrne Grant, which was funded at 200 percent of last year’s level.
“Finally, Brandy Smith was the second most tenured member of the support staff excepting the office manager. Mrs. Smith’s salary was not tied to or connected with any grant. All three of us were advised that we were being ‘let go’ because of the loss of grant funding,” the statement said.
“In addition, the excuse offered by Greg Gambril as to our termination is not consistent with his own efforts in the funding arena. Unbeknownst to most Covington County residents, Greg Gambril recently had local legislation passed doubling court costs with 100 percent of the additional revenue going to his office. Furthermore, the office receives some of its funding from the Byrne Grant which, as stated above, was funded at 200 percent of what it was last year.”
Gambril said Tuesday night that those who were dismissed “know full well there were additional reasons” for their terminations. “I’m not going to go in to the details,” he said.
He said the increase in court costs that passed the legislature this past year would not go into effect unless it is approved as a constitutional amendment in next June’s statewide elections. The increase in grant funding, he said, is earmarked for the ZeroMeth initiative and cannot be used for salaries.
Holmes, reached at home Tuesday night, said the “other reasons” cited by Gambril ran contrary to recent actions.
“Both Brandy and I recently received raises in the past month,” Holmes said. “And about a month ago, he sent Brandy a letter stating what a fine job she was doing.”
In their statement, Holmes and Smith concluded by saying they believed that all three terminations were politically motivated.
“We are not concerned about retribution and that is not our objective in issuing this statement. We simply intend for the people of Covington County to know the truth: We were and are good friends with attorney Walt Merrell who is widely rumored to be the front runner for the District Attorney election in November 2010,” the statement said. “We were fired not because of economics, but because of self-preservationist politics.
“As such, it should be noted that our termination is not why we now speak,” the statement said. “We simply speak now because we no longer have to sit quietly and bite our tongue while another fraud is perpetrated on the public. The truth is the truth and the public deserves to know.”
Asked if the terminations were political, Gambril said, “No, not at all.”
“It was no revelation to me,” he said of the possibility that Merrell, a former assistant district attorney, would run against him. “It has not been a secret in my office for several years.”
Gambril, a first-term district attorney, said he definitely plans to seek re-election next year.
“Prosecution has been my calling since 1992 and I plan to do this for the rest of my life,” he said.
Merrell said he has been encouraged to seek the office of district attorney and is considering a run. He will not make a final decision until this fall, he said.

Wake up Covington County. If you can't smell the cow $%^& on this story, you need to go see the doctor. Three of the best county employees fired within 20 minutes.... Enjoy that seat while you have it DA, won't be long now. I hope you'll be searching for a job soon.

It dont sound to me like the termination of the three employees is not "political". It sounds like someone wanted them out of sight out of mind. Some people in Covington County who own a business or have the position to terminate far to often use it to their own advantage, and this is another case of it. Do they not realize that some people have familys to provide for?

Not a good political move there Greg, if you wanted them gone, you should have had a good reason. Kinda strange that Brett and Brandy (brother and sister) get fired on the same day? cco when you typed "DA" did you mean DA as in dumb ass or district attorney?

I certainly hope and pray that we have a new DA in 2010! Greg has been playing politics since he was ADA and in my opinion, he was useless then! Kudos to Brett and Brandy for standing up for what is right and letting the citizens of this county know exactly what is going on up there in that Court House.

This whole county is all about politics. I always said it's not what you know but who you know ( I won't finish my little saying because I don't want this statement to be removed). This hasn't just started and it is not going to end. People don't realize, but it is in every town everywhere. Anywhere there is politics there is corruption.

I always wondered why our DA in Covington Co. never did any investigation into the criminal activities of Sherrie Phillips. Could this have been a cover-up as in "you pat my back and I'll pat yours"?? Sherrie Phillips had remarked that none of the JUDGES and LAWYERS would go against her. Apparently she was right .

well, well, well, you play with the enemy and then or mad because you get fired. Good for Greg. If you are not loyal to your boss you should be fired. Greg has done a great job for our county and will continue to do so. The good people of this county need to stand up and see what is going on and vote for Greg to remain in this position. I would rather have someone who was first the Assistant DA and then the DA was knows what is going on than people who are bullies and try to force people to do what they want them to do. You better remember that there are plenty of wolves in sheeps clothing.

Which is true? One set of statements says one thing, then here is another. Does the left side of his mouth know what the right side is saying?
"District Attorney Greg Gambril tells CBS 8 News he's dismissed an assistant district attorney, an investigator and an administrative assistant. Gambril says the three firings are unrelated but general personnel issues are the reason behind them.
"They were reasons that were a long time in coming. The timing was right and I did what I felt was in the best interest of the future of the district attorney's office and for the taxpayers of Covington County," he said Tuesday.
Gambril says the assistant D.A. position will not be replaced due to lack of federal funding. He says the other two positions will be filled -- he hopes by the end of September. "
From WAKA website
Way to go Brett and Brandy!!
If the general public only knew what goes on sometimes is the world of county politics!

People in this county need to WAKE UP. Who personally in this forum would want someone working for them that were trying to get them ousted? None of you!!! Good for Greg for standing up for himself. So the newspaper ran a story and everyone thinks they know the "truth" now....wrong! Any person in a political or executive seat would have done the same thing, even Mr. Merrill if he were DA. Mr. Merrill is already pushing his weight around and he's not even close to having the integrity that Greg has. He is a bully who tries to oust the elders of his own church. And you want this for your DA? I'm sure that his supporters are his friends, as the saying goes, "birds of a feather flock together". Political dealings are all over this county as they are throughout the nation, you will not escape it. But please become EDUCATED about the contenders of this office before making any decisions. If you do this, I am sure that you will find that Mr. Greg Gambril is plenty capable and fair.

So why are several of you trying to make this about Walt Merrell (not Merrill)?
Asked if the terminations were political, Gambril said, “No, not at all.”
Maybe you all should tell us how you know it was......

So, we have a english teacher in here. Who cares if the spellings are wrong, you obviously understood the post. What would you have said if Greg would have said it was political? The same thing. People in politics will be criticized for everything they do or say, just like Walt MERRILL if he's elected. Obviously, from the paper, others tried to make this about being friends with Walt. Just as you have the right to criticize grammar, we have the right criticize ignorance. Why is it that people can criticize Greg, but not Walt? The employees issued statements regarding Walt, that makes him involved.

I agree with lo1an2go. Grace was a phenomenal ADA, especially for the kids of our county!!! NO one in the DA’s office will be able to handle these extremely sensitive cases on the level that Grace did. Our victims will suffer as a direct result of her termination. Thanks Greg! And I actually agree with one of the statements made by troyqueen, ‘I would rather have someone who was first the Assistant DA…’ Being an ADA first is a beneficial prerequisite in becoming the DA and I nominate the one MOST qualified and capable…Grace Jeter-Covington County District Attorney-2010!!!

I also would like to nominate a former ADA to be a the next DA.. Walt Merrell. Thanks for letting us know what you look for in one, troyqueen.
I think it's great the Brett and Brandy let us, the people of Covington County, know who Greg really is. I agree that this man talks out of both sides of his mouth. Wake up Covington County. Elect a new District Attorney in 2010.

I have known Greg Gambril since I was just a little kid. Greg is an honest, caring man. If I was stuck in a situation and needed help, I would call on Greg before and of the crew on the other side of this story! I've also known 2 of the ones that were fired for most of my life and they all stick together like a pack of wolves when something happens to any of them. It doesn't really matter who is at fault, they will ALWAYS assume "It's not my fault, wah wah wah." It's almost funny to watch. Everyone knows it and rolls their eyes when it happens. I've never seen a group of people who love to start drama more than these people. I guess it's needless to say, Greg will be getting my vote in 2010!

I don't know two of the people who were fired very well, but I do know one of them quite well and I have a good guess as to the additional reasons the DA sited for the terminations in that specific case.
I don't pretend to know the whole situation or the climate in the DA's office, but I would definitely take this letter to the paper with a grain of salt and not be as hasty to judge Mr. Gambril as some folks seem to be.

Everyone needs to realize that Mr. Gambril has to remain much more tightlipped about his reasons for firing these employees. An employer can't just run out screaming to the world about why an employee was fired. The Holmes crew has never worried about that before, so why would we expect that to change now?

Well, TEAM_GREG...why did Mr. Gambril air the terminations of these three people all over Channel 8 News if he has to be so tight lipped? It seems to me he was trying to cover the mess up before it hit the ceiling! And you are correct, the Holmes crew has always stuck together and will continue to stick together. They are a family and that is what families do. It just so happens that they are nice people and have a VERY LARGE extended family in law enforcement and in other areas and they too will stick together!

Mr. Gambril went to Channel 8 in an attempt to put some barracades out to stop the wild fire that was spreading throughout Covington County. This wild fire was ignited on Monday and continues to grow. This is just a typical case of bitterness. It happens too often when someone loses their job due to their own lack of performance. Blame is always put on the man in charge. Knowing Greg as I do, I can assure that the blame is not on his shoulders in this case!

You are right Team_Greg, he went to Channel 8 to attempt to stop a wildfire that he was stupid enough to start. I think it is about time that people in this county start to stand up for themselves against these so called high officals. For those of you that are so in favor of Greg, why don't you take a look at what he has really done for this county. Nothing, all he does is try to make himself look good by adding to his numbers. You all ask why is there nothing done about these people that are arrested over and over again and then put back on the streets to cause more problems. Well, here is why. If they get arrested and go before him and he pleds them down from Man. II to simple littering, they are free to go back out on the streets and Manufacture some more dope for your kids along with mine to get a hold of. But he does not care about that because he knows that they will be arrested again by the people that actually do their jobs in this county. Each time they are arrested and let go it adds one more knotch on his belt. Just adding to the numbers to make himself look good. He has given 2 different reasons now for letting these 3 individuals go. If he is such a great wonderful man, why can he not just tell the truth and quit crossing up his lies??? Why would you give 2 of them a pay raise and a letter sent to one stating what a wonderful job she has done and then turn around only a few weeks later and fire them??? Then make the comment that it has been a long time coming??? How long??? Did you decide to fire them before you gave them a raise??? Think about it people, it makes no sense. Yes, the 3 of them are very good friends and have alot of very good friends backing them, but if you were done the same way that they have been tell me you would not be upset. They were all wonderful people, they all did their jobs and exceeded all of the expectations set before them, none of them deserve what they got. All they want and the rest of us want is for him to be a man and give the real reason they were let go rather than to keep telling his lies!!! I consider them all to be family and I say WAY TO GO BRETT, BRANDY and GRACE!!!!! Don't ever lay down and be someones doormat!!!

Until Alabama is no longer a "hire and fire at will" state, individuals can be fired for any reason, SADLY, including paranoia or political strategy. I feel certain that all three of the individuals fired were doing their jobs well. The firings were not financially motivated if Mr. Gambril intends to replace them (as per his quote to WAKA). That brings me back to paranoia and political strategy. In this difficult economic climate, three people have lost their source of income due to one individual's personal motivations and aspirations.
I had no complaints against Mr. Gambril until today. Congratulations. You're a politician.

There should enough of these jobs available next year for everyone mentioned to have a chance at one in the judicial market. I've never met any of those folks being talked about but maybe Mr. Gambril having so many years under his belt should seek a 'higher' office' with his political support group, maybe Attorney General or State Represenative and move forward with his career and life and let Mr. Merrell have his chance at the DA's office for a term. They would probably BOTH win, with all the assistant's slots there'd be jobs for everybody and Covington County could work together and be positive for commerce, education, and retirement. Feedback please?

Nehemiah, in her last comment she said, "You do fit in wonderfully with Greg though, glad to know WE still don't have any competition for the upcoming election."
Had you been able to read, there would have been no need in your previous comment. I was referring to the whole campaign, not Brandy or Brett as one.

TEAM-GREG, You are being iggnorant and taking this a little to far,Your post are getting ridiculous and childish, the comment about the pecans shows this. I am for neither Walt or Greg, but it seems to me that Greg had no "good cause" in terminating these 3 people, whom have familys to take care of. What does it matter if they are for Greg or against him? As long as they did their jobs and did them well, and since 2 were giving raises and one a letter of what a good job she was doing then it seems to me that they were doing their jobs like they should have been. I'm sure all the people who work in the DAs office are not for Greg, or anyone else who has or will hold that position, and it shouldnt matter either way. They go to work, do their jobs to the best of their ability, make their paychecks to take care of themselves and their familys and then go home and get on with their lives. Everyone has a right to whom they choose to vote for and whom they want in office, that doesnt mean they should get terminated over their views or opinions. And I'm sure I didnt spell everything in this post right or use correct "grammar",but o-well I wasnt aware that it had to be "grammaticlly correct" to be able to post our opnions. If it needed to be I guess the Star News would have offered spell check before posting comments. And if it's giving you such a headache then why dont you stop reading the comments, and stop posting responses to us uneducated people!

I have read all of the above statements, I would have hoped that a person could work in this County as an employee without constantly being worried about losing their job. I know that the Deputy Sheriff's have to worry every four years and that is a shame. I feel compassion for the employees that lost their jobs and hope that they will resume employment as soon as possible. I would ask the public if they would vote for a Civil Sevice Act to protect the jobs of the individuals in the future.

I LOVE that there are some people on here that have nothing better to do with their time than mock people for their comments on a matter that obviously does not concern them. If it did then they could give a comment that ACTUALLY applied to the topic and NOT badmouth the 3 involved! (TEAM-GREG). I consider 2 of these people to be a part of my family. Certainly the best of friends. NO, we do not rally around each other and cause drama....we care for each other. There is a difference. I can't sit and read this Negative Bull**** without commenting. So, referring to the comment that they stick together like a pack of wolves....at least us wolves have friends to stick by!!!!! I love it when people choose to let their mouths drool with all the negativity b/c it makes them feel important, but if you can't come up with a worthwhile comment, KEEP YOUR IGNORANCE TO YOURSELF!!!! I will continue to stand by my friends. Waiting for 2010 and NEW CHANGES!!!!

Well i must say all of these comments are just wonderful. There are a few people on here today that has worked with Gambril. There is also a Holmes on here commenting. But she has no idea about what she is talking about, she just falling in suit with the rest of the family. Any Smart person would see this as a chance to better this city. I agree Gambril does not need office again. But the Holmes dosent need to be in there either. Don't get me wrong Brett has done a great job in that office. He probably is the best investigator up there. But some of the other things he has done doesn't give him the right to have that job. If i'm not mistaken an investigator with the DA's Office was fired not to long ago for doing basically the same thing. There are a lot of ethic violations going on in that office. If you ask me they should all be fired. We need change in that office. And I Also don't think that someone 2 faced like Merril doesn't need to be in there either. I promise you if they would make some of those employees in the DA's blow in one of those breath test things half of them would be drunk. Are at least one of them i know for a fact. Driving a state vehicle to a liquior store to buy liquior doesn't seem right. I think all the Case's Gambril, Brett, and Brandy has been involved with should be looked over again by a higher Office to uncover the cover ups.

I am Brett and Brandy's mom. For what it is worth Brett is out of town and Brandy is at Wal-Mart so I guess if you need to belittle my kids - I can take it. There are a lot of rumors, ideas, whatever you want to call them, floating around. I certainly am not going to try to make excuses for anyone or for whatever your condemnations are of this family on here. If you would feel better getting Tony or me "told" our phone number is in the book or you can come and see us. For you see, when you talk about my child(ren) you're talking about me. Most parents are that way and it really doesn't matter how old one is.
I'm sure that the remarks that will be made about me will be hurtful and actually, I could help you with some of them ("My reputation has always preceded me", "People like you don't exist in my world" ). I've heard many so take your best shot! And don't worry about correcting my grammar or puncuation, not important.
Now to what I need to say and probably should have in the beginning...... most of you don't know alot about what is going on in all of this situation - nor truely care. It's just plain fun to argue. Others think you have "a dog in this fight" because of past issues and - maybe you do. Attacking my family won't solve the problem, albeit it may make you feel better. Greg Gambril did what he did to better his career. I would have done the same if I thought it would help me. Could I tell of things that I know about Greg or that he(Greg) has told me? Sure I could. But what purpose would that serve? Who knows what the future holds for any of us, I may need his help,he could need mine.
As for Walt Merrell, he's my friend as well as Hannah his two little girls and another on the way. Will he run for the DA's job? I don't know. Will someone else - again don't know.
Will we pass out pecans as political favors, probably not. However, when I was little I got them as Trick or Treat items! Blue Collar/ White Collar, oh I guess blue, we have to work for our money and make ends meet. We wouldn't know any other way to live. And oh, pecan people are good folks, it's just a way the Lord provided a little extra money at the right time of year for folks that don't mind working. Ever thought about that before? land taxes, Christmas. Ask older folks and they will tell you so don't make fun of these people.
In conclusion, I hope that before this gets worse please think about the words you use, the people being hurt, and is it really worth it to you - whoever you are. Opinions are great, we grow from our differences. I don't, nor can't, believe that this event was ever meant to become a personal vendetta. If so, I can assure all of you - it didn't start here.
Thank you

Mrs. Holmes i think You are a wonderful woman for making that comment. Brett and Brandy are blessed to have a mom like you. Its like this, if everone cared about this community, and the welfare of this county, instead of their politics. We wouldn't have these problems. everyone has faults, as do Brett, Brandy, Myself, and everyone else, but to be done the way Gambril did. Thats just low. If it needed to be done and from seeing the things that i seen, it needed to be, it should have been done a different way. People don't care about other people anymore, thats what is wrong with this place.

Lynne, I find it rather amusing that you take offense to people talking about your family! Some members of your family have been running around town for the last 2 days saying horrible things about Greg. How is this any different. My niece is a friend of your daughters on facebook. She referred to Greg as "Pineapple Head." There are many other hurtful things being spread across facebook by your family and others. Again, please explain how this is different. I've sat in your living room before and heard y'all ramble on about others. Now, it's your family...it's somehow different? By the way, about the pecans...I love them. Lynne Holmes: Very well presented, and I hope very well received. You have a great attitude.
An old French expression of my grandmother's (it translates better in the French) "Some people are born to have a large loaf, and some are born with a small loaf." You can apply many meanings from that saying.
God bless your family.

TEAM_GREG..have you sat down and had a meeting with Greg? If so, I would certainly like to know what was told to you. If it is not the two stories he has already given. I personally appreciate the respect and opinions of each one of you on this post. I am Brandy Holmes Smith. I am proud of the job I did for the citizens of Covington County and I will never say that I nor Grace nor Brett did anything but our jobs. There are many others in that very office, courthouse, and in this county that will say the same. Differences of opinions, everyone will have their own. I was there. I know what was said, and as previously stated in an earlier comment by my mother, he did what he thought was right. I have no hard feelings for what was done. I will survive, it may be handing out pecans, mowing lawns, I will do what I have to do..I work for a living. I'm not ashamed of what has happened to me, I have no reason to be.
Posted by realist (anonymous) on August 19, 2009 at 2:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I think part of the problem here is no one commenting (except probably Mrs. Holmes) knows for sure the other reasons the DA had for firing these three and whether or not they were legitimate. Unless the paper prints and interview with Gambril where he explains those reasons and gives proof to back them up or the opposite happens and they print an interview with the folks who were fired and their proof that their firings were politically motivated there is little reason to continue discussing this.
Saying Greg Gambril is a great guy or the Holmes family is a wonderful family may be generally accurate but it's not enough to conduct an argument this vehemently. Bashing the side you don't agree with is even worse, considering I haven't seen anyone post any solid evidence of how one side or the other is in the wrong. I have my opinion just like everyone else and I have reason to believe I'm right based on past experiences, but I don't know specifically what happened here so I'm going to wait and see what happens before I completely make up my mind.
Last time I checked speculation and hearsay are not enough to string anyone up, so cool your jets and wait and see what new facts are made public over the next few days. I'm sure we'll be seeing more about this in the paper and on channel 8.

All these young lawyers are good people wih good families in town with young families still in school I suppose, and its certainly a hard job since the people that run afowl of the law live there and have families there also. Lots of the customers that run through the 'court system' settle down after a while and become workers, parents, and grandparents themselves and wind up at out at Johnson Park, groceries stores, county fairs, etc., etc., and follow small town southern life once their life is back in order once again and become productive customers for area merchants, home buyers, medical patients, and taxpayers, and yes, even voters again. I think the best man that helps as he goes, a good family man, that knows everyone in the county would be Grady Lanier. A seasoned lawyer that has helped more people mend problems right there in his office
with logic and family values whether they had the money or not. I think he should run again, or else be the family court Judge, he's just a very good fellow. And if nothing else prevails, everybody's reading this hot story it seems, just wnated to thank Mr. Lanier for his decades of family service to the people of Covington County, Alabama.

So to switch subjects for just a sec...anyone else notice that this article was written by a third grader? I mean, I get that the Star News is now New York Times or anything, but c'mon! I wonder what the editor thought as he sifted through notes written in purple crayon?
Basically, this whole thread of name calling is merely a symptom of bad journalism. Just pulling a few quotes from a clearly biased (not badmouthing the ones fired just noting that their position is clearly biased) letter is nothing more than rabble rousing.
Hopefully, the paper will see fit to print a piece that more thoroughly examines the problem from an objective standpoint.

TEAM_GREG, I have read your post on this blog and feel I must say this. No offence to you or anyone else on here. I have known the entire Holmes family my entire life. I have be in a few situations with Brett that were quite "harry". Brett has always been truthful and honest with anything to do with his job and law enforcement, even if it might put his butt in a sling. Always, always has been side by side with any and all fellow brothers, even if he might disagree with them. Right is right and wrong is wrong. I DO NOT KNOW what happened at the courthouse, but just plain beeing rude and hateful about one's family is wrong. I agree with Lynne 100 percent, just like I personally told Tony after her post.
If you want to comment, by all means do so, just have a little courtesy and respect in the post.
I am a parent and would not have been as nice as Lynne if it were my child(ren).
Again, no disrespect to anyone.

TEAM_GREG, I guess you fall under that movie quotes "You ate to many paint chips as a kid", and "You must have live under too many power lines". Dude, you are lost as lost can be. You open your mouth and run it just like Greg and only $#%^ pours out of it. I know the whole story and obviously you don't from what I have read. I was talking to an officer the other day who told me that he was on his way to getting areested for not testifying in a case that he believed the defendant was being done wrong by Greg (yes your DA). The officer told me that Greg said "You don't know how much political pressure I am getting out of Montgomery to prosecute this kid". The officer tried to do what he felt was fair. This officer has never lied to me or any other person I know and I had heard this rumor until finally running into him the other day. So, you think that things are not politically motivated? If you do then you are gullable. Hell I am not even a police or work in that field but can find out more than some just by asking. You look at a price at the grocery store before you buy it, why not look at who you are voting for before you vote. It's that simple. I have had a couple of Dealings with Mr. Merrell, some good and some bad, but I will definitely support him for DA. Good luck to the families that lost their jobs. Their is a lot of us that are standing behind you.

jess04--you hit the nail on the head when you said that that about the Holmes family sticking together and about them being fortunate. If only everyone had that type of support system. But then, that is what gets to some, they have never had or known that kind of bond--and probably never will. And that my friends is when the "green-eyed" monster of jealousy rears its ugly head!
I hope that all is revealed in due time, and that the Holmes family stand fast to their beliefs and to each other.
As far as the pecan remarks, many families use "pecan money" for many things. Maybe you've never picked up pecans for a little extra money, maybe you've been very fortunate to have plenty. There's nothing wrong with that at all. With that said, good luck to all involved.

covingtoncountycitizen2008, you're comments mean nothing to me. All you have done is make more empty accusations! If this is true, let's hear names. Otherwise, you're no different than the rest of these stubborn buffoons on here!

@Tankdude and all who have rallied around Mrs. Holmes for her chastisement:
Remember, they brought this themselves. I am not saying whether or not they deserved to be fired, but they started the discussion. They sent the letter. They made the story happen in the first place.
Have some of the comments been over the line? Probably. Does anyone REALLY care whether some low level bureaucrats lost a job? Probably not (at least not the ones commenting here). Is it more fun just to rile up the people who do? Most certainly. (See: "troll")
Anyway, this is just what happens on the internet when a thread isn't closely moderated (which ASN apparently isn't). This is also what happens when an office place disagreement is passed off as news.

I would hope Greg is someone's child. My point taken. Everyone on here is someone's child/parent. Do you have kids? Put yourself in the same situation. How would you feel? Comments are fine, but namecalling and being rude are unnecessary. Everyone has an opinion, but only a certain few know the facts. Let the facts be just that.
Again, I have not commented to offend anyone.

I hope, Team_Greg, that as you make these remarks the one you're representing is aware. Because of having worked for him for three years, and I as thought I knew him, he would not have previously allowed such comments to be made.
As far "bashing" Mr. Gambril I never did. I on many occasions did acknowledge when confronted that I had a friendship with Mr. Merrell and his family. I had nothing to hide, but at the same time, I also informed Mr. Gambril he was my boss and he was who signed my checks, not Mr. Merrell. So the story of us "bashing" Mr. Gambril is very untrue. That my dear, is the rest of the story.

You have taken my comment to heart because you know exactly what I said. I have not taken anyone's side one this matter except Lynne's comment about a mother standing up for HER children.
If this were My children, rest assured I would not stop, especially since you stated you had been in their home. Be a grownup and go back to THEIR home and state your mind, in a civil way. I am sure Lynne would just love that!!!

He would be so disappointed in the horrible misuse of the English language. Brandy, you tried really hard on that one. I even noticed a few big words. Brandy Smith likes this.
Ashley Morgan Just so we are all understand, Greg Gambril is making news tonight saying he fired Brett, Brandy and Grace becuase it was what it is best for the tax payers of Covington County. He did not mention his constant state of paranoia. Yesterday someone dusted off his balls and brought them to him so that he could find the courage to go thru with this. He... Read More fired them simply over a friendship they have with Walt Merrill. Wow, Greg, you were a huge mistake to the people of Covington County. "Remember Your Friends in 2010."

I do not know all of the Holmes family personally but I do know Brett, and have now for a while. If I could say anything about him it would be that he is a very honest and a very loyal friend to our family.
Now TEAM GREG, as far as the pecan remark and your comments on white collar/blue collar. My family has harvested pecans in this area for many, many years. BLUE COLLAR WE ARE! And I can assure I’ve had my blue collar #$% has been whipped with more money than your white #$% has ever seen.
GO TEAM BRETT!!!!!!!

Well, well. How does it feel to be where you two are now Brett and Brandi?
You two, and your wife Brett, have written snide BS comments about someone else on here that is giggling his backside off right now.
But, you say the people need to know the truth. I remember when the truth didn't concern neither of you (and conin1) when you made your comments public. Didn,t care who you hurt or if it cost them their job or if their family would suffer.
But worry not buckaroos. Polictical favors are abound. You two got your last jobs that way and I'm sure you will get your next jobs the same way.
It's a political office. There is not one person who made a negative comment about Gambril that would not have the done same thing. I don't support Gambril nor Merrill. Things will never change regardless of which may win.

This all coming from the posts you have made today. Maybe, just maybe, you will find something better to do with your time.
As far as my comments to Lauren, they were as follows:
Posted by admin23 (anonymous) on August 15, 2009 at 9:08 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I as well agree with Festus and alhm. As far as, Alabama coming out of the cave of ignorance, if the cave of ignorance that we live in is the cave of God's love and the ability to trust in our Lord, for our Lord to be able to pull us through the tough economic times that our country is in..I'll stay in my cave of ignorance. I prefer it.
Lauren, you may feel you live somewhere else and have the knowledge of the South to where you can speak of it in such a nature, you have no knowledge of the way things are, but a few. As Fetus stated before, speak with those people, just as you say the others were categorized, you have not only done the same but the same things you listed above as the emails were doing to you.
So sorry you have such a hard heart for Alabama and our beliefs in our Lord. I will pray for you tonight. God Bless
Now, if you would like to take the time to review them for yourselves in her letter to the editor, please feel free to do so.
Finally, I will say it's been fun, thanks Team_Greg for being the person I needed you to be all day today. It's been a blast.

andy2utah...knowing you for a long time, as I have, I can say that you are not only just like you were in school but have never changed. Yes you were a bookworm, you grew up in a broken home, many times broken and that was your only source to keep your life somewhat the same, to keep your nose in a book instead of facing reality. Once you moved off you really were forgotten until you decided to send a letter to the Star News in which you "bashed" the people of Covington County. Once again, you've felt that was something you needed to do, but not only the people who send emails in Covington County but to the people in this great State as well and I personally as well as any other proud citizen in this state do take offense. I'm glad you're satisfied with your 106 comments, this one will make 108 and I'm proud to say 108 to get to tell you how sorry I am for you that your life has come to such a pathetic place you feel the need to say such about a wonderful place to live and a wonderful community of people.
Good luck in Salt Lake Lauren..you're going to need luck wherever you go with an attitude like yours.

It seems that Grace had a heart for children with her sexual awareness program and the DA pulled the plug on that. He thought she was getting too much attention and not him. How arrogant of him to deprive the kids because of his own insecurity. What kind of DA does not let his own staff have EMail in his office? Is he afraid they will campaign against him on-line? His funding is public record. Look to see if there has been a cut of that magnitude. For the record, you won't find any. What a desperate move on his part, not to mention political suicide. He will unseat himself if given a little more rope!!!

oh and Mr. Holmes, welcome to the 21st century...it's a wonderful and exciting place. Since you are apparently new here, we'll try and take it easy on you.
See, since the internet has become so pervasive, the whole idea of bullying has changed. Whereas used to, you could just invite someone over for a good old ass whoopin', now you are likely communicating with someone all the way on the other side of the world.
Nowadays, we denizens (inhabitants) of the world wide web have just taken to making fun of each other. It's called "Trolling" which i think beigecollergirl referred to earlier. See, likely what happened here is that Team_Greg doesn't give two sh!ts what is going on in City Hall in Andalusia, Alabama. Likely, he is sitting up in Flint, WA laughing his ass off (LHAO if you will) that he got some crazy redneck so fired up that he put his telephone number on the internet.

I love the South, especially Alabama so this isn't trashing or slamming or making fun. Just enjoying the reading. Oh, and one more thing Lauren, if you really did orchestrate this...job well done.

So here's the thing.
Three people got fired--people with families, wives, children, health insurance costs, bills to pay and parents who care about them. While this story did provide me with some satisfaction after the virtual ass-beating I received last weekend, I think everyone needs to take a step back and realize these are PEOPLE we are talking about.
I haven't seen Brandy since about 1993, and I don't have a memory of Bret since probably 1998. I have no idea why either of them were fired. I do not know what they do in their spare time or what they post on Facebook. I don't even know what kind of people they are since I haven't seen them in what seems like forever.
I do, however, know what it feels like to be publicly drug through the mud for no reason. And even if Brandy and Ashley had something to do with that, their family still does not deserve this lashing.
Perhaps, as rgodwin so eloquently put it, "I have destroyed myself" since "my family didn't raise me this way." I will tell you what my family did teach me, however--the Golden Rule. You know, that rule that you should only do to others what you would wish them to do to you.
Am I angry at Brandy and her cronies for the things she said about me last weekend? Sure--who wouldn't be?! But do she and her family deserve this treatment? Probably not.
Regardless of how I feel about the Bible and its importance in my personal life, it does have some good things to say (like many of the world's other religious texts). We could probably all learn from it in situations like these. (Remember the whole thing about loving your brother and casting the first stone?)
Don't worry, Brandy, Lynne and Tony - as someone told me last weekend, this will all pass as soon as the next "big story" hits in a couple days.

Team_Greg (Lauren or one of her family members), you really should find something else to entertain yourself! You have posted over and over and over...and over...and over. If you knew the whole story you wouldn't be defending Greg the way you are. Yes, he fired 3 employees...that is fine, he has a job to do. No, he should not have plastered it all over the Channel 8 News. Unfortunately, people lose their jobs...but their bosses are not all over the TV telling a little story about it. I have known the Holmes' for quite sometime. I went to church with them and I was in school with Brett, Brandy, Amanda and Ashley. I wasn't any of their best friends, but I know they are kind and honest people. And, everyone is entitled to an opinion. You have expressed yours and they have expressed theirs and everyone else, like me, has put their two cents in. We all need to just let sleeping dogs lie. Nothing we say or do on this forum is going to change the outcome. The Holmes' and many others, including myself, are going to campaign against Greg...BIG DEAL! That is why we live in America, so that we can have a say in our government.
In closing, if you truly dislike this county, town, state, perhaps you should stay away and that includes the local newspaper. You have done nothing but belittle the Holmes' and the people of this community. Shame on you!

Lets stop beating the bushes!! Team_Greg, just 'WHAT' DID THE HOLMES SAY THAT GOT THEM FIRED? Come on now tell the whole story and tell what you know. I can tell you that a letter came into the Probate Office ,as a matter of fact, it was a letter of garnishment on Sherrie Phillips. The employee who recieved the letter turned it over to the proper office. Sherrie went off on her then fired her. I guess thats when she decided to steal more than a few pennies. SOoooo Why did Gambril really fire them?

I don't know who TEAM_GREG is either, but I would love to find out. He seems to get joy from saying mean and hurtful things towards people, trying to show his intelligence level and belittle theirs. Not only is he talking about three of my best friends, he is now going after their family. In my humble opinion, this is a very big mistake. Yes, the Holmes family sticks together, just like each and every other great family that I know. I am proud that they have taken me in as a friend and treated me like family. I will be there for them through thick and thin, just as I will be there for all of my friends. I have never heard any of them claim to be perfect or better than anyone, yet the feeling I am getting from TEAM_GREG and his posts, he feels that he is better than a lot of ther people on here. People who, just like him, came on here to state their opinion on the situation at hand. I am no professional profiler by any means, but from what I have read, he is a very shallow white male in his 40s or early 50s who thinks that the world owes him something and since he hasn't made it happen for himself, he will just get on here and get his 15 minutes of fame. He has really made me and a lot more people on here angry with his comments. We are all now a little less intelligent from having to listen to him rant and rave from a far. TEAM_GREG, anything that you have to say about my comment, go ahead and say it. I will not give you the satisfaction of commenting back. I have friends to go see and stand behind.

Team_Greg, you need a job! Maybe buying pecans. You have way to much time on your hands. If you bought pecans you would be so tired at the end of the day you would not have time to act like a spoiled child. My family has been in that same business for many years. It is an honest living. And I bet more money than you will ever see in your life. I have known this family all of my life, good people. I have known them in business and as friends, and they are not the people you describe to everyone. Honest hardworking people. You have no right speaking about them the way you have. If you love Greg so much, fine you go work for him and see how you like him then. Vote for him, no one cares who you support. But leave this family alone. You have been on all day. What is wrong with you? You will not make that call and you know it. If I were you I would quit while you are so far behind. I will tell you this we have had a good laugh off of you today, you are a very angry little person. Just makes you look silly. Have a nice day, what is left of it.

Hello, hello, hello!!!! Well, let's see where I want to start, hummmm. Team-Greg, let me say you are about the most ignorant person I do believe I have ever seen in my life!!! I have to say you are also a huge coward, you come on here and talk more sh*t than I ever thought one person could do but then are too scared to make a phone call!!! You might want to run and hide back behind your momma's skirt tail, you might be safe there. You must not know very much about this small town, because when you stir the pot such as you have eventually the people you stirred it with will find out who you are and that my friend can be a bad thing. I really do hope that you never come back to this county and need any help because I do have a feeling you would be told where to go. Seeing that you know so much about this situation why don't you go back up and read the comment posted by Friends2010 and make some logical comments and see if you can answer some of those questions. You obviously do not have a job or a life so you should have plenty of time. I do want to thank you though on a job well done at burying the man that you are on here defending. I have to say you are probably one of the best players on the Walt Merrell team. You may want to go find you some lotion though, you will end up with blisters tomorrow as hard as you have worked that shovel today! :-) Now to the really important part of my post, Brandy, Brett, and Grace we all love you and support you in whatever you do! We know what kind of people you and your families are and are very proud to call all of you our friends. I will say, remember your Friends in 2010, vote Walt Merrell!!!! As for you Team-Greg, go find something more useful and satisfying to do with your hands. ;-)

I am Proud to have worn the uniform of the United Staes Armed Forces to protect the freedoms of speech we've read here today. I challenge this reporter to publish ALL of the upcomming elected offices for 2010, to include salaries and job qualifications, from the DA to Judges, and all other offices from the local Republican and Democratic chairman in the county, usually they wait until the last two weeks to do this and thats not enough time to have a real census of the people that could really make a positive change for the community or give new people a chance at an elected office. It seems Covington County is on the move now, they want jobs, homes, careers, a future, but it seems too many people are being locked up and their rights to vote are taken away even though their healed from drugs or whatever and redeem their lives at home after their rehabilitation. Would you please touch on this subject, because this does affect many Covington County residents and their family members
in the 'now' and current times. The families of this society I speak of does vote in these elections and read your news & shop in your stores. Thank you for allowing my opnion.

I’m one of those Holmes’ and Andalusians and I am proud of both. I love my family dearly, and I am very proud of Brett and Brandy for standing up for what is right.
I am proud that Brett and Brandy had an opportunity to voice their opinions in the Star News (in response to Mr. Gambril) and received the rally of support from family and friends. The fly in the ointment is some outspoken boors, who were very active in their put-down politics so omnipresent in my life.
I believe it is important to note that one pitfall of our American workplace is our deceptive informality: We’re all on a friendly first-name basis, yet we’re working, not socializing. Whether we like it or not, there are status differentials in our setting. It’s worth reflecting privately whether you’ve overstepped the invisible-but-still-present bounds of your role.
For the long-term health of your career with Mr. Gambril, it pays to be slightly more formal and correct than is required, the more so when you are part of the infrastructure as Brett and Brandy were. If you work in a political office, or at least this one, you clearly cannot have different political views than the boss man.
Remember that you do not have to like or even respect those with whom you work. What we all must do is to behave with civility, cordiality and professionalism to all those with whom we interact; I know that Brett and Brandy did that.
Posted by Amanda (anonymous) on August 19, 2009 at 10:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I work as a teacher, I have an advanced degree, and I am well known externally for my contributions in my school system. Most of the time, I love my job and feel valued and appreciated for what I bring to the table. I was taught to work hard and work from my heart no matter what I did because it is God's work - we all were.
In education, where our goal is to teach and to assist students with their development into professionals, it is part of our mission to model how grown-ups in the workplace interact and in the real world; you see individuals at the top of their own fields who over-extrapolate their expertise and feel qualified to make judgments without study, evidently based on the assumption that other areas are less complex than their own are people who occupy the center of their universe and are oblivious to their effect on others; they have, shall we say, robust self-esteem, sometimes verging on the delusional (see any comments made by Team Greg for reference). These categories overlap, and before slotting someone into one of them, it’s worth double-checking your own conduct to assure that you’ve set and stay within humanistic boundaries and that you are observing the appropriate courtesies. I have yet to hear a comment by either of them that is unhumanistic.

Much can be learned from this situation. The primary rule is that what you get to change is you, not the other person. Lessening the sting requires both changing how you perceive the situation (seeing a larger context) and changing how you react. This admittedly is a chicken and egg problem: how do you change how you react when it feels so bad in the moment? What if your instinct tells you that the intention behind the conduct that is painful to you is malicious and may escalate if the low-level insults don’t seem to be hitting home? Try to hear the next bit in a warm and caring tone of voice: it doesn’t really matter what motivates the conduct, the only thing you get to change is you. I believe that is what Brett and Brandy did; they responded with only the facts.
Team Greg, I will cultivate compassion for how horrible it must feel to have the need to put others down all the time. I am sorry you could not be a part of my lovely family for which you so desperately yearn. If you had been, my parents would have raised you better.
I know that letting the insults roll off without shrinking or cringing will raise us in the esteem of those who are present, and help them regroup to respond in our support. Public nastiness can leave people paralyzed and embarrassed—as well as privately worried about becoming the next target. Step back and re-frame your arguments and positions so they have a more scholarly look and feel: base your information on facts and so marshal them in ways that are meaningful to the ones who matter in your life, if anyone. I can assure you (and the rest of your family) that they don’t matter here. If you would like to discuss this further, I think you know how to contact me and I'm what you call a face-to-face kind of person. Anytime, anywhere.
Now, this wolf needs to get her sleep

Didw any of you see the interview with the DA on WKNI awhile back when the county was talking about bingo. He went on and on in a big righteous way about how gambling was a bad thing. He said that went went to Ist Methodist and how their Book of Discipline said that we should not gamble. He told about a letter that he had written to every public official in the county telling the actions he would take if any one in Covington County approved the opening of electronic bingo facilities. Hey I am against bingo, but his letter was not entirely truthful.
This is the same guy that could not get excited about doing his job and going after the law enforcement officer that shot a man in the back who was running away in handcuffs down in Lockhart. He washed his hands of that situation like Pontius Pilate. Just like he knew who the the folks were on the county payroll who facilitated the so-called jail breaks and did nothing.
He needs to go to church next Sunday and ask for forgiveness for bearing false witness against three people in his press conference the other day.

Wow, I must say this has been entertaining to say the least. I do not know any of the parties involved personally, nor do I care to, but this is interesting....you never know what deep dark secrets lie in that courthouse....I'm sure if a willing participant dug deep enough, they could just shut the whole thing down and start over from scratch! Could NOT be any worse I don't believe.

Will we be another Jefferson County? The corruption in our Gov. didnt start with anyone who fills present job's. No, it goes way, way back. There have been thieves in our Courthouse sence 'git go', and if anyone ever tried to correct corruption they were kicked out or payed to leave. Did anyone read the artical about how many times the CC Courthouse has burned down? Take some loose time and study the history of CC as well as the Cities/people within. Time to make a 'CLEAN SWEEP'!

I just want to say one thing and I am done. All these Holmes want to talk about corruption and this and that, but I have personally witnessed Brett Holmes do things in his Covington County Sherriffs Department uniform that would get him fired in a heartbeat. Maybe you shouldn't be helping prosecute people for things that you yourself have done while on the clock at the Sherriffs department

WHATEVER! Who cares about this political mess. Who supports (likes) who and who doen't. Boy you guys use up your time on trivial things. Who cares why they got fired. They'll survive. If Grace really has been an advocate for children, that is wonderful and she should continue to do that. She can do that outside the District Attorney's office.

Why dont you fess up and tell the public exactly what you are implying that Mr. Holmes did in uniform that was unlawful, or are you another 'Spoon' stirring up bull-sh!# ?

Imjustsaying: If you see/saw an officer of the law doing unlawful deed's and you didnt report it to the Sheriff .........then YOU are no better than the person who broke the law.

It seems rather inappropriate to be commenting on an "anonymous" blog about personnel matters. I would like to note, however, several facts:
1. Greg Gambril was awarded the 2009 DA of the Year Award by the Alabama District Attorneys Association. http://www.andalusiastarnews.com/news/20.... That sounds to me like he is held in pretty high esteem by his colleagues throughout the State of Alabama. I have also read within the last year that he secured grants for county law enforcement and that his prosecution of crimes resulted in a number of convictions. I have never heard or read anything derogatory about the job Mr. Gambril is doing, only praise. As the head of the DA's Office, he has the right to decide the people who will be on his team. Call that "politics," but there is nothing wrong with that.
2. Brandy Holmes Smith, one of the fired employees, is Admin23 on this blog. She has posted 115 comments on the blog, a number of which had to be taken down by the site staff. Many of her comments try to personally attack other people rather than civilly address a valid difference of opinion. For example, she wrote in response to Lauren Yant's Letter to the Editor that Lauren was the product of a broken home, as if that had anything to do with Lauren's opinion that people should be more tolerant about other people's opinions. Alhm is Admin23's sister. Together, they make quite a team of trash talkers.
3. Perhaps there is a lesson here. If you are an overly opinionated person who makes it a habit to talk bad about other people, in the end you only hurt yourself.

I guess this clears it all up now. Abraham Lincoln said "You can fool some of the people all the time, but not all the people all the time".

Estragon, I would like to ask you to be careful what you point out as "facts". With that said it is my "opinion" that you are a quick one! I don't believe that you have ever asked me who I was. If you were just a little smarter or knew me as well as you think you do then you would know who I was. My username after all is only my intials Ashley Leigh Holmes Morgan. Wow. Anyone that can read knew that yesterday. And I'm pretty sure that Brandy said who she was also. Try to stay up.

This local fellow one time in Andalusia was owed a couple of hundred dollars for a freezer by this gentleman south of town. The freezer was full of the summers vegatables and the air condition ran 24/7, cool, with plenty to eat. The man demanded his money for the freezer and was told no by the gentleman. The man went to see James Prestwood to seek an attorney to collect his money that was rightfully owed him. Mr. Prestwood listened gently to the story, rubbed his silver hair back and said, "I know they owe you for the freezer, but their too many of them to make mad, you know we have jury pools here and I make a living reasoning with those folks, better to just lose the two hundred dollars in the long run, instead of 'stirring up a bee's nest'. It worked, later that fall, the man was paid in due time for the freezer and also given deer sausage.

Maybe Ms. Jeter’s tactics has caught up with her. Apparently my family is not the only one she has railroaded. For instance, not disclosing a person’s background before they serve on a jury. Or not completely investigating the whole story; just doing whatever it takes to add another notch to her lipstick case. Or worse yet, having her clients change their story and purge themselves on the stand while pointing her finger in the face of the accused and convicting them before a jury of their peers has a chance to hear the case. In my opinion Grace Jeter got exactly what was coming to her.

A prosecutor's job is to enthusiastically prosecute a crime any time. If you feel that Grace Jeter was too tough for your relative's lawyer to handle, you should take that up with his lawyer. The children of Covington County have been blessed to have such a committed advocate fighting for them, and they are the ones who will suffer from Gambril's decision. It takes a special person to handle abuse and molestation cases, and it will be hard to find another prosecutor with her dedication and sensitivity.
Also, if you meant to suggest that she has suborned perjury, you need to check your facts. That's a very serious charge (and one that I doubt the Andalusia Star wants to provide a forum for).

Perhaps sunshine1973 is ticked off about a friend or family member who was a defendent in a case that Mrs. Jeter was prosecuting and can't seem to come to grips with the fact that maybe, just maybe, his/her friend or family member may not be who they think they are or should be. And just in case you may have never sat in the courtroom...all a PROSECUTOR does is PRESENT a case...the persons sitting on the JURY are the ones who CONVICT the accused. Perhaps sunshine1793's friend or family member got exactly what was coming to him/her.
