Burke’s to open new store Oct. 3
Published Wednesday, August 19, 2009
The new, larger Burke’s Outlet store is expected to open Oct. 3, store manager May Thornton said Wednesday.
Corporate officials announced in July the retail store would move from its current location beside Winn-Dixie to the old Food World building on U.S. Hwy. 84.
The move will allow the store to occupy 27,000 square feet of floor space and give customers “better names and better prices,” Thornton said.
“We can’t tell you how excited we are about the move,” she said. “Progress at the new location is really coming along. Those guys are working hard.”
The company is also nowhere near filling the more than 15 positions that will be created by the move, she said.
“We’re in the process of hiring those new employees and are taking applications everyday,” she said. “We said 15, but we’re going to need a few more than that to begin with, so I encourage anyone who has retail experience or is looking for a job to come and apply.”
Applications are being accepted at the store’s current location, she said.
The new store is expected to feature an expanded line of shoes, juniors, young men, plus-sizes and children’s apparel, linens, home items and more.
Burke’s Outlet currently operates in 11 states, with 30 stores in Alabama alone.

Now maybe they will add cloths that will fit the "blessed women" in andalusia!!! Why is it so hard to believe that not all women are a size 2 around here? Hey we like to dress up just as much as they do!!!

Blondie, I agree!! We need clothes too! Goody's was awesome!
I love Burke's because I can buy my children some cute clothes there for good prices. Maybe with a bigger store, I can chase them longer. :|

Most retail stores don't get to order what comes in and what inventory they carry. They get what comes to them. I know it gets frustrating but the people who work at the store, or even manage the store usually can't do anything about that. Since they are going to have more square feet of selling space, maybe the variety in departments will grow.

Well! It's about time. Now maybe things won't be so scattered and cluttered like things are in the old store. Nothing is organized. I hope this is better. We do need more clothing and shoe stores, not to mention more restaurants. Can someone say, "Applebee's?"

canon09, a couple of years ago I really wanted to open a nice chain restaraunt here such as Applebee's, Ruby Tuesday, Olive Garden, etc. I checked into it and it's pretty much not feasible unless you are independently wealthy. Applebees typically requires you develop a whole region (3 or more restaruants) and you have $1 million in liquid assets for each restaruant you plan to open (so at least $3 million). There are also a number of fees including a $40k/year franchise fee and several fees based on percentage of gross sales.
Other chains have similar requirements, so unless you are already a millionaire you are unlikely to be able to open such a restaraunt.

Alot of what stops things like that from coming to Andalusia is also the fact that the City Officials wont elect to help bring it here. When wal mart first came to town, they made a contract with wal mart that if they built in andalusia, that they would sign a contract stating that they would not let any other major dept. stores build in andalusia for the next ten years. How do I know this?? Lets just say it pays to be at the right place at the right time!
IF it isnt so, then why did it take soooo long for any other types of business like that to come to andalusia???? think about it, look how long it took for these places to start to open up here!!
Why did the city council do that???? Now this is a big word people... KICK BACKS FROM WAL MART!.. Dont beleive me, look for the documentary called
"Wal Mart.. The High Price of Living" and watch it!!
