Juvenile vandals arrested
Allegedly responsible for destroying mailboxes, including sheriff’s
Published Thursday, December 10, 2009
Two juveniles have been arrested and linked to at least 10 acts of vandalism in the Babbie and Harmony communities.
Sheriff Dennis Meeks said the two 17-year-olds confessed to “dumpster dumping” and the dismantling of mailboxes at residences near the George Boles Road area in the days leading up to Dec. 1.
“There were 10 mailboxes that were pulled up off their poles and thrown into the ditch and two ‘Hobos’ dumped out, strewing trash,” Meeks said. “On Dec. 1, the two were caught by Sgt. Kevin Wise, Deputy Dustin Butler and Deputy Brett Holmes when they received a call about the vandalism and were able to stop a car matching the (alleged) suspect’s vehicle near the Cty. Road 81 area.”
Meeks, who said he was the owner of one of the vandalized mailboxes, said other arrests are pending in the case.
“We hope that with these arrests it will stop the vandalism in that area,” he said. “Deputies will continue to monitor traffic in the area for any other signs of criminal activity.”
Meeks said that through the two arrests, the Sheriff’s Department was able to clear 10 cases off its books.
“We think that there are other (cases) out there, but at least with these arrests, we know those 10 cases were definitely committed by (the juveniles),” he said.
To report an act of vandalism in the community, call 334-427-4911 and ask for dispatch, to avoid tying up emergency lines.

I had my hobo dragged down the road trash everywhere and a broken wheel the trash company would not replace this and it was vandals last year! My whole neighborhood had the same thing happen and I wonder if it is the same people I live on Shoemaker rd (cnty rd 81).

The chances are good that at least one of the youths live near Shoemaker Rd. or one of the roads that branch off Shoemaker. I would suggest that anyone residing in the Harmony area, including Shoemaker Rd, J Bird Road, Co. Rd 70 & 77, etc., contact the Sheriff's Dept. about any vandalism or theft of property that has occurred in the area over the last year or so. Chances are good that the same individuals, or close relatives, are connected to the criminal acts.

It doesn't matter what they did because Covington County doesn't prosecute criminals.

2 orange jumpsuits, 2 big trash bags and somebody to watch these goobers is all this situation calls for.

I wonder how long it will take before someone starts posting comments, about how these are such wonderful kids.Or how we just don't understand what there going through,or kids will be kids. You know it usually happens on a topic like this. I always get a good laugh at those kind of people.

lookeyhere, I was wondering same thing. There names are out there so you know some friend will feel the need to defend the gentlemen's honor. ;)
Hey maybe they know the other boys who shot up the vehicles! Malicious damage to other people's property seems to be a team sport around here.

These kids need some video games to play, that will keep 'em off the streets.
mailboxes vandalized, hobos knocked over...lucky that these kids are just a bunch of amateurs.

Oh yea , they will pay for their fun. I had my mail box busted several years ago by 6 teens and each one had to pay me $50.00 . YEA, they'll pay. Mail box and trash trashing should be about $100.00 apiece now. Judges, I'm watching you.

While we're talking Trash........... If someone who lived across the street from you and for some reason or another did'nt use the county hobo, but had a huge garbage pile in front of the house; what would you do? I have reported it time and time again. County Comm. SUCK

Winkie, I have that same problem with a neighbor.....I don't know how she lives in that shack....you actually can see daylight through the walls and the yard and what's left of the front porch are jampacked with garbage, yet the truck comes by here every week, and she has a hobo! It's totally embarrassing giving directions to my house, "when you come by the house with trash all over, then mine's....".....I can't understand.
These juveies need to have to clean more than they dirtied! Give them a job with the trash truck after Christmas day, make them ride on the back of the truck and pick up excess trash! That'll give them someting to think about !~

We always had something to do when we were growing up such as helping our mothers with the housecleaning and hoeing grass out of the garden, picking the vegetables when they got ready, helping mother put them in the freezer or can them. We worked hard when we were growing up. Keep your kids busy at home and they want have time to go and destroy anyone's else property!

Winkie...have you tried calling the Health Dept?
Posted by SouthernAttitude1 (anonymous) on December 11, 2009 at 8:08 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Ineedtobeheard, do you live in the county? I do, in a small named community.
I have the same problem with one of my neighbors. Junk that has been in the yard over 40 years. LOTS of junk! If they would haul some of it to the scrap yard they would have a tidy sum.
Not even gonna go into the filth of non-recyclable junk, rodents, roaches and fleas. We spend a small fortune on poisons to barricade our yard and house from all of the disease carrying "pets" they have. This particular house is the downfall of our entire community.
We need laws, yes I did say we needed a law, to clean up our small communities in the county and the areas lying outside of community townships. I don't mind a pack rat who is saving useful junk but decayed, rusted and just pure filth does not have it's place in our county.

I have done some stupid things in my yonger days, very much like what was done here. I had to do my community service and apologize to the persons involved. Nevermind the punishment and embarressment i got at home. The youths now have a chance to turn there ways around and eighther straten up or continue down that road. Now that they see what happens when you get caught we will see if they change. I know I did!!!!!

ineedtobeheard---- you can see daylight through your neighbors walls, trash everywhere, do you think there could be a problem she cant handle or something?..maybe she needs a little help and compassion? IF i could see daylight through the walls of anyone i know or even dont know, i would be offering to help in any way i could...thats just sad.
Help her clean her yard up, weatherize the house..make sure shes not freezing..be human.

Its easy to come down on people you consider to be under you.............( It's totally embarrassing giving directions to my house, "when you come by the house with trash all over, then mine's....".....I can't understand.)).................maybe you just live on that beautiful house on the hill, and God will welcome you in to his because your so used to the good life.

bluesclues. if you have a neighbor such as the one ineedtobeheard has or the one I have you would see that from a different point of view. Sometimes it is just sorryness of the people for not caring what they live like or how they are bringing down property values. For that matter just plain not caring. My neighbors have the dreaded don't give a $$it disease.
Filth is filth.
If you have struggled to keep your property nice and not a health hazard, why should you have to put up with someone els's disregard for anyone including themselves?
Actually ineedtobeheard sounds like he is giving directions to MY house. I have a modest house, nothing fancy, just kept up to good living standards. I would not be ashamed for anyone to see my place.
Doesn't the bible say cleanliness is next to Godliness?

why don't they put them through the "scared straight program" that is where they send them to every prison in the state and make them stay until they are 18 they would learn a lesson then. Well we could hope they did!!

...I don't believe that "cleanliness is next to Godliness" in the Bible, but it does say "love your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22:39)
bluesclues, I hope your attitude is contagious, then this place will be a much nicer world. Just a helping hand and not a handout could make a world of difference.

here we go again.. someone fusses over the stupidest things! it goes from kids tearing up mailboxes and trash cans to the idiot complaining about the neighbor. I agree with Blues. If i knew someone who didnt have food or needed help, id do it in a second. Unlike the ones who like to make fun. Your Pathetic.

schmeltit_deltit, yeah you are right but is something we have heard all of our lives. The love thy neighbor, well, I think I will pass on that one for the one particular neighbor. I do love and help the others, though.
I would happily let anyone who wants my junky neighbor have them. Feel free to let me know when you can pick them up. Oy yeah you must take all junk and pests.
i_am_so_sorry123456, I hope you are sincere in your regrets. I wish you the best if it is the case. As far as your buddy, Good_ol'_boys, he needs a good lashing. Seems to have no regret.

I have a neighbor who has a neverending yard sale outside her house. It's not garbage, because the stuff looks like it gets changed out every week or so. I know the lady is fine, because I see her out walking around in her yard and sitting in the chairs with friends all the time....chairs that are in her front yard, 5 feet from the street. Clothes racks with clothes hang out there every once in a while, and at night or when the weather is bad, she covers them up with tarps. I thought at first that maybe they were just cleaning house or remodeling or even moving out, but this has been going on for months!!! Who do I call to complain about this?
There's a difference in someone who can't do anything about it and someone who can set the stuff in the front yard, but is too lazy to take it off somewhere, or move it back in the house at least!!! I live in town, in the city limits, and I thought there were ordinances against that kind of thing. It brings down the atmosphere of the entire neighborhood. If you are an able bodied person, take care of what is yours!!
Posted by schmeltit_deltit (anonymous) on December 12, 2009 at 4:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I feel your pain, and there is a limit to the amount of yard sales a person can have in a year. I believe any more than three or four it becomes a business and then gets subject to all the expenses and liabilities that any other small business must endure.
Posted by andalusiacitizen (anonymous) on December 12, 2009 at 4:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)
But it's really not even a yard sale...I don't think....it's just junky stuff all in the yard, and on the porch, all the time!! :)

The best thing "i am so sorry 123456" can do in the military is to take the time to learn to spell. The great school system in Covington County apparently did not do a great job at teaching him this one very important skill.

Maybe, the Judges should order anyone trashing and or destroying property to work for the Health Office/County Comm. for 6mon. cleaning up trash throughout the county as well as repairing buildings/property. I'm watching our Judges,Comminisers,Mayor.

bisquitsandhoover, these same people for a couple years did not have their septic pumped and calling or going to the Health Dept. was a waste of time, we (neighbor's) had to call the Sheriffs Office. Now, calling the Sheriff to be able to get s#@t cleaned up is WRONG!! But that is how this county works. If ANYTHING gets done you will have to call Dennis. Can we have someone arrested for not doing their public paid job?

ineedtobeheard: I know the feeling. Some people love to live just to hord trash and the more they have the happier they are. They will probley have a melt down when they do have to "CLEAN IT UP"!!!!
BLUESCLUES: I will contact you by private e-mail and give you my neighbors address. Thank you so much for pledging to help "CLEAN IT UP"!!
IAMSOSORRY: Ok, your sorry, so get out there in your neighbor hood and get to work over and beyond what the Law orders you to do.

Why is it so important that this kid mis spelled. The point here is he said he was sorry and pray that he really learned a lesson. That is what is wrong with this county now, they worry to much about finding faults in everyone that they can't see any good. No I didn't say anything about what he done, I will be the first to say he needs punishing. I got it when I done wrong and gave it to my kids and it is what is called tough love and every child needs it. He may have a learning disability or a good reason why he couldn't learn to spell but that still don't give a reason that all of us are not prefect like some think they are.
And as far as the house you can see daylight through the walls, let me tell you something that is the kind of house I was raised in with 7 brothers and sisters and a nephew. My mom and dad done the best they could do and we was rich as we could be because we had parents that loved us and feed us everyday. There was many a days we counted the chickens through the crackes in the walls. But we were very happy and survived and learned to appreciate what we have. I am not saying this is the way for anyone to live but they may not can afford better and have to do what they can. But I don't agree with all the junk, it would have to go. Have a blessed day.

It is important to spell correctly because one is on a public message/opinion board trying to communicate ideas. The way one presents the material or ideas determines, to a large degree, how valid they appear. Every person that post on this, or any other website, has access to a spell-check program. Also, if one uses Mozilla it highlights misspelled words. Furthermore, if someone is going to post a message, proof that message.
As to the youth asking forgiveness and remitting a sorrowful plea, it does not remove his actions nor does it mean one has to accept his entreaties. The Sheriff's Department put in expensive man-hours that they will not recoup. Citizens had to pay out-of-pocket for repairs or replacement of their property, garbage was strewn along roadways and on private residences, and the waste company had to endure a loss of profit and customer complaints.
As an aside, I think I know one of the youths involved and a tearful apology or prayerful words hold no interest on my part. These are minor transgressions for the young man compared to others he has played a role in committing. Hopefully, he won't kill someone before he serves a nice, long stretch at one of the state's "hotels" for criminals, then he can pray for Abdullah, LaQuenta or Bubba to be gentle each night. Finally, when repentant youth returns home, he and his family members will share a common bond.

I am not going to comment on the off topic discussions.
I am commenting regarding the law breaking youths.
Placing them in the legal system may very well place them in the system for life - which will cost the taxpayers for life - and the benefit to society may very well be negative.
I have known many people placed in the 'system'. Once they are deemed 'criminals' they become criminals. To place this label - to say once a criminal always a criminal - to say a criminal just needs to be locked away forever - is hypocrisy - and I would say 99% of us are criminals.
If you have ever been speeding, turned without signalling, taken a pen from the office, cheated on your taxes, had a drink or smoke underage - then you are also a criminal, whether you were caught or not. I am not condoning such activity - merely pointing out that we have all broken a law. Or two.
Once in the system, these people - now called criminals or felons - associate - in jail, prison, monitoring programs - with other 'criminals'. They learn from others how not to get caught and how to be better criminals. I know folks in AA - who now drink together. Folks in Narcotics Anon. who find new dealers and contacts. Folks in prisons and jails - who find out how to not get caught and beat the system.
Ous US society has become one of punish, punish, punish and to the fullest extent of the law. There is no compassion and no rehabilitation. There is no help to get their lives turned around - no hand up. Maybe I should say very little - rather than no help before the flames over semantics start. Either way. Gone is federal help and student loans. The US has the highest prison population of any country in the world. We also have the greatest number of police of any country. Have we reduced crime ? Are we safer ?
If you want to create more criminals - create more laws that can and will be broken. Then pay more to administer the legal system and prison system. We are now reducing school budgets to increase prison budgets. Somehow that doesn't seem to be the way to solve this.
Yes - the 'dog' did something wrong - but how much can you beat him - before you expect him to bite back.
Do you really expect someone to join 'your team' when your team keeps beating them down ?
Do I believe that tipping over two trash cans (Hobos) and vandalizing 10 mailboxes should not be dealt with ? Not at all.
Do I feel they need to get three felony charges and handed the '3 strikes you're out' vedict ? Not at all.
Make them apologize to each and every person they vandalized. Make them clean trash and do community service - providing a service rather than a cost to the community. Make them buy new mailboxes - or repair and repaint - as required.
