Landing incident reported at airport

Sheriff lands plane on its belly

Published Saturday, February 7, 2009

Sheriff Dennis Meeks was involved in a landing incident at the South Alabama Regional Airport Saturday that resulted in the runway being closed and reports filed with the FAA. No one was hurt.

Airport administrator Jed Blackwell said the sheriff was flying a plane used for training pilots. Blackwell said when the plane’s landing gear malfunctioned, Meeks, pulled up, circled the airport, and landed the aircraft on its stomach.

“It wasn’t a full crash,” Blackwell said.

Blackwell said he wasn’t at the airport during the landing, but from what he’s been told, Meeks “did a good job” landing the plane.

The Andalusia Police Department, Andalusia Fire Department, Advanced EMS, Covington County Sheriff's Department, and other rescue agencies responded to the incident.

Blackwell said proper procedures were followed and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was called. Based on Blackwell’s recommendation, the FAA allowed the SARA to clear the site. The South Alabama Regional Airport closed the runway and the fire department cleared the debris before the FAA gave SARA permission to reopen the runway.

There was some damage to the plane, which was insured, Blackwell said. There also was some damage to some runway lights.

Meeks was not flying the Ximango Power Glider recently donated to the sheriff’s office by the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, who originally obtained the plane from the U.S. Air Force.

Hate to say I told you so. But I had quoted earlier I thought the whole idea was a "crash and burn". I'm afraid the whole proposition is going to get even more expensive for Covington County. At least he wasn't hurt. The plane and runway lights can be replaced. Human life can't be. I'm sure his ego is hurt. Maybe he learned something from this unfortunate "incident".

I hate it happened but it did not cost covington county anything. I'm glad he wasn't hurt.

I'm happy the sheriff wasn't hurt. I wish people would just leave him and the sheriff's office alone. Anytime something happens they always get blamed. Some people just need to get a life.

AndyBulldog--Did you read what it said? The landing gear malfunctioned!!! It could have been anyone it just happened to be the Sheriff flying the plane...Thank God he wasn't hurt!!

Any landing you walk away from is a good landing! Thank goodness the sheriff wasn't hurt.

Let me see if I can get it right. A federal prisoner escapes from the jail and nothing happens to the correctional officers who were goofing while the prisoner was on his way to Mobile. The US Marshals come and retrieve the rest of the federal prisoners and cancels the $300,000 contract with county. The sheriff accepts a free glider plane from another county and waits 2 weeks before he tells the county that they now own it. Now he takes flying lessons and crashes a trainer plane that belongs to some else. HEY!! Whats next ? Maybe he will blow something or someone with the water cannon they bought with the grant money. Somebody needs to make a movie about this guy. It could be cross between "Walking Tall" and the "Dukes of Hazard". They could call it "The Sheriff Who Couldn't Walk Straight".

Tigger - Do ya smell something fishy? Ya think all this time they have been spending together flying has also been used to strike up a way to turn a profit for all parties involved? I think it goes something like this: Okay you are my son-in-law. You get to fly when you want to at this airport right? And you get $ for your services right? Okay, can you teach me to fly while you're on the clock? Okay, son-in-law, you and Barton own a plane together right? Let's get him to let us use the trainer plane for free and I'll let him become a Bail Bondsman in Cov Co which will alow him to profit from as well. And since Barton's wife is an employee of the airport, can't she let us have a hangar to house the "Free" airplane from Etowah Co if I can get it for free from them. Okay, then we will convince the Pilot Club to donate $8,800 dollars to the S.O. and convince them we will use the money to help locate Alzheimer's patients that may become lost as part of the Proj Life-Saver Program already in place and with Meeks first Cousin who is a memeber of the Pilot Club's assistance to convince the club to go along with her. Then, I "Sheriff Meeks" can fulfill a childhood dream of becoming a real live airplane pilot on somebody else's dime! Well gohhhh-leeee--schazam ! It's me it's me I'm Earnest Tee! Nobody will ever figure us out! Well guess what.....It's the end of the road. The GIG is UP! Don't hate the player .....hate the game. YOU Lose! Your cover is blown Sheriff. See if you can find it from up there in the clouds in that airplane!

You just might be suprised what guards working for the federal government make. If the chief really embezzled 75K where did it go?

I am one of the owners of R & B Aviation, LLC. We own the airplane that Sheriff Meeks was flying Saturday. I was present at the landing incident and assisted in the efforts to land the plane safely. Sheriff Meeks had just completed his solo cross country flight and returned to SARA to land the plane when the problem with the landing gear was discovered. He did an excellent job of bringing the aircraft in safely.

We had our own “Miracle on the Hudson” at the South Alabama Regional Airport Saturday afternoon. Sheriff Meeks remained calm and followed instructions from the ground crew. Most experienced pilots would have been scared to death; I know that I would have been. Sheriff Meeks has only a few hours of actual flight time, but has spent many hours studying the required material to obtain a private pilot license. You do not just go jump in a plane and start flying. Pilots spend many hours at “Ground School” before they are allowed to get in a plane and start learning to fly. Sheriff Meeks is an excellent student, and his calm, by the book landing is evidence that his flight instructor taught him well.

This incident could have happened to any one…..even me. This was not something that Sheriff Meeks caused. The pilot that landed safely on the Hudson did not cause the flock of birds to be sucked in his engines. Sheriff Meeks should be congratulated for his courageous efforts in safely landing our plane.

The true test of any individual is how they react under stress in a life threatening situation. Sheriff Meeks proved himself looking down the barrel of a loaded gun Saturday afternoon. We are very lucky to have a Sheriff that has his guts.

Let me raise a few questions and make a couple of comments regarding the "incident" that might advance the story somewhat.

We know from the article what type aircraft the sheriff wasn't flying, but we don't know what he was flying. Time will fill in the blanks. In the meantime, let me offer the following.

First of all...what type aircraft was involved? Does the landing gear on that particular model operate by electric means or hydraulic? All retractable landing gear systems have a manual backup. Why did that fail to work...or was the system somehow overlooked?

Secondly...if there was an instructor pilot on board and it was a teaching situation, the instructor was the pilot in command and will have take responsibility for the incident, not the sheriff. If the sheriff is a ceificated pilot, student or otherwise, and it was not an instructional flight, then he was the pilot in command.

I think you get the drift here...we presently don't yet know all the facts. However, one thing is certain, the insurance company is going to have fun with this one.

Oh, by the way, Mr. Blackwell...anytime the fire department clears debris from a runway, it is a "full crash" as in crash landing.

This DFM characters comments sounds a lot like a 20 page letter that a deputy wrote after he was terminated by former Sheriff Anthony Clark. In this letter he belittled other deputys and and acted as if he was better than everyone else. "You do the math". I cant remember his name, but it seems like the same guy. Im sure he would love to see this administration fail. He loves to keep the hornets nest stirred up. Just my opinion.

I no longer live in Andalusia but have family that does. I like to get online and catch up on Covington County every chance I get. The things that have been said in this area are totally out of line and unprofessional. SHAME ON YOU ANDALUSIA STAR NEWS FOR ALLOWING THIS TO TAKE PLACE!

I personally know Chief Deputy David Anderson and his wife. I think they are great people and the residents of Covington County should feel fortunate that you have them. I wish that all of the people that I know that Chief Anderson has helped in the past would get on here and share that with you. Do you know how hard it is to keep a Deputy or Police Officer in Covington County making $9 or $10 an hour? You don’t know and you probably don’t care. He does and he should be respected for that.

Regarding where his wife works, if you read National Press Releases, Contract Security POST 911 is where so many law enforcement officers are going because it pays more money than most small city or county agencies. At least she has a job and doesn’t depend on a free check.

I would like to know how Chief Anderson’s name game up over an airplane accident? People in Covington County are some of the most TWO FACED, BACK STABBING individuals that I have ever met. It is one of the biggest reasons that I didn’t start my family there and got out of town.

When you can get all City Council Members in the County and the County Commission to elevate the salaries of ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT in the County, you may be entitled to expect more out of them. I personally think that they do an H-l- of a job for you.

Nobody is perfect, I am not perfect, but some of you have gone to an all time low. I guess you got out of church and went straight home so you could criticize and judge someone that had nothing to do with topic at hand. YOU SHOULD BE PROUD COVINGTON COUNTY! Remember, this is the WORLD WIDE WEB, not ALAWEB

If people are not happy with who the people of this county elected as our sheriff and/or the people he has chosen to work with him, then maybe they should qualify and run themselves next go-round.

I challenge all of you to go to the next Commission meeting and ask for a pay schedule (it is public record) hint hint. and just see what our Deputies are trying to live on. If you think it is easy then fill out an apllication and go join them. I SUPPORT THE DEPUTIES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am ashamed and embarrassed at the comments on this post. Gordonsux2009, how old are you, do you even know the issues? Are you over 18? The citizens of this community have one of the most advanced and well prepared police forces in the country for a community of this size. The police chief brought APD out of the sewer and has prepared them to handle almost any kind of incident. You talk a big talk, but when you or your family needs their help, you will be grateful, because they will come and put their lives on the line, including Mr. Williams, to protect yours. As for the water cannon, its free, its good for crowd control, destroying explosives (in case you cant read, there have been several homemade bombs found during the last few months) but the big word is FREE! Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Grow up people!

First of all...thank goodness the Sheriff wasn't injured. Sounds to me like he did a hell of job bringing the plane in for a controlled landing without landing gear. Way to go Sheriff!

Second...as someone who knows the Sheriff, the Chief Deputy and his wife, ALL are fine, upstanding people who do a great job. I salute you and ALL the law enforcement personnel in this county...you do a great job.

As for you other idiots taking shots at the Chief Deputy, his wife and others. Where in the article did it mention them? I didn't see it anywhere. Sounds like you're having personal problems and are using this forum to vent your frustrations. Get a life.

taskmaster you need some educatin' You may be not old enough to remember the use of fire hoses on Alabama citizens daring to stand up for their civil rights in Birmingham in the 60s. Believe you, do not want to go there. The water cannon purchase is the result of having a severely under-trained, under-experienced EMA director. Misplaced priorities will always produce dumb choices when spending public money. Sort like accepting free glider planes that we don't need. Then trying to hide the expense of owning and operating it behind the skirts of the ladies of the Pilot Club.

Of course it fits in well with the cameras downtown where BIg Brother is watching out for teenagers hanging out together because there is nothing else to do. Meanwhile there are plenty of places around town that nobody is looking at while drugs are sold openly on city streets.

BTW, where were all those homemade bombs and why haven't we heard about them before now. Is STAR NEWS behind the curve on this story?

I can attest when I have called the sheriff's department in recent months they were always polite and respectful. In 10 minutes or less, depending on deputy's location, if you watch, you will see them. My road is not the Kinston Speedway and as long as I live here I will report reckless drivers. My loved ones travel these roads and "IDIOTS" are putting them at risk. Hey, "IDIOTS", get off the cell phone, stop at the stop sign and 70 is not the speed limit! And girlies, that make-up does not help your looks.

Thank you to the sheriff and his deputies for doing their best. They can't be everywhere all of the time.

I really feel sorry for some of you on here. When will you wake up and realize it is 2009 now and Andalusia is rapidly outgrowing some of you? The plane was a donation and you might not need it now, but with the constant growth in C.C., you never know when you might. Be proud you have leaders who make things happen. Regardless of the need of some of these things, they are still assets to the community. Do some research on some of the more financialy challenged countys and tell me what they have. Some old beat up patrol cars maybe?

I have known the sheriff for a long time, I do not think he is a bad person and it looks like he is trying. I did not vote for him as many of you did but we have to make due until the next election. Like most elections it is just who is liked the best not the one that will do the best job. Dennis is not perfect and neither am I or anyone else. Who gives a dam if he flies a plane or not.

For a "fresh" pilot, with not many flight hours, to make such a landing suggests a cool head in an emergency. Also, true character emerges during a crisis. This speaks volumes about our Sheriff.

What do you mean pay for grants. There are basically 2 types of grants. Those that require no financial input from the person applying and those that require you to put up some money. Getting a grant is easy if you write your grant request well. There are several sources on the internet to teach you about grant writing. They have grants that require no co pay from the requestor, that you can buy a farm, land, livestock, equipment, but be prepared to work for it. Thats an example, they have grants for everything, do you want to study honey bees, they have a grant for that. Almost every department in the federal government gives out grants. A good place to start is www.grants.gov

As for the road graders, those were purchased back last year. I have seen at least one sitting road side back a month ago and it looked brand new. I don't remember when or any other details, like how old the ones they replaced are or where the money came from. They were probably being brought in as part of going to the unit system. As for the person wanting to know about the bombs, I think the story might still be on-line if you want to go back, but there was a meth lab bust in the Gantt area (if I remember the area right) and the person had his home booby trapped with some homemade bombs cause he was out to injure the DTF officers. Also the justice system works as fast as possible, there is a lot of work involved in making these cases and it has to go through a process. A lot of times it is the defence attorneys that bog the system down, needing delays and more continence's to get their ducks in a row. Crime is up all over, not just here in our fair county. The law enforcement in Covington Co. has their hands full and I feel do a good job. And most of the crime some how revolves around drugs. No one forced these people to start using, they chose to use and how that is the fault of law enforcement, I would like to know. Sheriff Meeks had an angel on his shoulder that day helping him land that plane, cause it could have been much worse.

Its funny this story about a plane crash evolved into a discussion about motorgraders.
