Boy walks from home, found safe
Published Friday, February 13, 2009
A Florala boy gave his parents quite a scare after he went missing shortly before dark Thursday, Sheriff Dennis Meeks said Friday.
Meeks said 4-year-old Dustin Wilson was reported to have wandered away from his Pink Rose Lane residence off North Creek Road around 5 p.m.
“His mom said he had been playing in the yard with his dump trucks and she was helping her daughter with her homework,” he said. “She said she only took her eyes off of him five minutes and when she looked up, he was gone.
“She said she called for him for about 15 minutes before she notified us,” he said.
Meeks said several deputies and members of the Sheriff’s Reserve quickly “headed that way” and K-9 tracking dogs were called to the scene.
“Fortunately, Deputy Jerry Fields was close by when the call came in and was able to quickly respond to the residence,” he said. “About an hour after the call came in, Deputy Fields located the boy sitting on the porch of a residence about a mile away.
“He asked him his name, then his mother’s name and was able to confirm it was the missing boy,” he said. “We’re happy the incident ended well. That close to dark, we were very alarmed. The child was found safe and sound, and we’re thankful for that.”

It is good that they found him. Does this prove that the folks in the SO can do what they have always done without a glider plane?

tadpole.. You've got a dirty mouth.. Lookeyhere can have a opinion if he wants too. I myself dont have anything for the sheriff.. Maybe if he would have actually done something when i came to him about 3 or 4 months then maybe id care for him. Your calling people bad names.. maybe that word your so stuck on is just something your lacking.. :-)

Oh come on tadpooh, all I said was thank GOD the sheriff wasn't flying over peoples houses. I think the deputies did a great job finding the kid. Thank the GOOD LORD the little boy was alright. Uh but I still don't want the sheriff and his crop duster flying over my house.

Just want to say....Thank God the little boy was found and was alright. but must say If my child had been lost I would of wanted our sheriff and anyone else out looking for them and if need be flying also. you know if you look back at what has been sheriff in the past you'll see our sheriff is trying to do a good job. Why don't you just give him a chance. My opinion he is better then what has been before him in the pass .

Lookeyhere I have always found that most people who don't like the Police have something to hide. I think alot of people in Covington county can't see the trees for the forest. I will break that down for you so you can understand it. You are so fixed on putting people down that you can't see the good they are doing. We all have a right to free speech but sometimes why don't you use it to promote good will instead of hate and discontent. The sheriff is doing a great job and I could care less if he flies over my house 12 times a day, and especially in a plane that did not cost me a dime. I hope you can get that if not let me know and I will write it on a 1st graders level for you.

Lookeyhere, would you tell him to keep the plane on the ground if a 4 year old in your family was missing? Probably not. I just hope it doesn't take something like that to happen before you come to appreciate the sheriff's new upgrade.

I think what lookeyhere means is....get an EXPERIENCED pilot to fly the plane, not someone that does belly flops.

Hey give the sheriff a chance. He is taking flying lessons and at least he is trying. I have issues about alot of law enforcement but you have good and bad in every feild. The only thing I really dislike about this is every who is over this paper has the right to remove what every they want I feel that is wrong unless it is really offensive, but what happen to freedom of speech? I don't comment much now if everyone wants to come to Opp and post there wouldn't be enough time for the editor to delete ideams.

I just wanted to say that my 83 year old father was the home the little boy was found at. My father said that the child did not know where he lived or who his parents were. Daddy was so upset that a small child was alone out there that he could not think straight. When I arrived at daddy's the state trooper, officer Fields, and the mother was there. I am thankful that the child was ok, but my first thought was something had happen to my father. Thank God we have caring troopers and officers that are quick to answer to our calls. God Bless all of you.

Just wanted to say thanks to Jerry Fields...I know he was searching for that kid as if he were his very own. I am very glad Jerry's here in Florala...along with Steve Geohagan.
