City, Bullard partner on paving project

Published Tuesday, July 7, 2009

The Andalusia City Council agreed to work with local businessman Don Bullard to repave the entrance to the Kiwanis Community Center, Covington Center Arena and sports complex.

Department of Leisure Services Manager Dwight Mikel said he visited with Bullard, who recently entered a lease agreement with the county commission to manage the arena.

“He had 25 to 30 of his people working out there,” Mikel said of the owner of Bullard Excavating. “They were doing everything from moving dirt to cleaning the kitchens.”

Mikel said that Bullard offered to use his crews and equipment while they were on the site to repave the entrance to the facilities if the city would purchase the materials, expected to cost $16,500.

“That includes milling the street and fixing the ‘birdbaths’ we’ve got out there,” Mikel said.

Mayor Earl Johnson expressed his thanks to Bullard for “being such a good neighbor.”

“It portends good things to come for the arena and the sports complex,” Johnson said.
