Gantt man accused of rape

Published Monday, July 20, 2009

A Gantt man who fled to Florida is now in custody after he allegedly broke into a Gantt home and raped a female occupant.

John Michael McCarthy, 42, was arrested Friday and charged with third-degree burglary and first-degree rape, Gantt Police Chief Chris Byrd said Monday.

Byrd said due to the nature of the crime, neither the victim’s identity nor specific circumstances surrounding the alleged crime would be released. However, he did say the crime occurred in June and McCarthy fled to Hillsborough County, Fla., shortly after the incident.

“The warrants were issued (then) for (McCarthy’s) arrest, but McCarthy had to be extradited from Florida to face these charges in Alabama,” Byrd said.

Byrd said McCarthy has an “extensive criminal history” and is currently being held without bond on a violation of probation order in the Covington County Jail.

Ok, I'll comment. What part of Gantt did this man live in? I think this is information the public needs to know, just in case he makes bond. ( Does he have a bond set??) It did give the address of the man in Opp but not the one that is close to home to me.

It is hard to comment intelligently when the GPD releases no info on the act...I understand the necessity of keeping the victim's name unk, but, what date, was the victim beaten, where in FL was McCarthy picked up, where did he live prior to the alleged rape, was he part of the victim's past, etc? All these answers can be released to the public, then we can all comment. If he is guilty, then he should not be bonded out. If the investigation hits a brickwall, then he has the right to a bond. I don't have any answers, just my thoughts out loud.

Not enough info has been released to make a comment. He may be the guy next door who helped you out one day. Maybe even baby sat your child. This is the type of crime that will ruin two peoples lives forever. Lets not get the rope out just yet. Lets not convict thru rumor or on the grounds of what someone assumes.
I have been in the position where i was accused of a serious crime that i did not commit. It was with the help and support of neighbors and friends that the truth came out.
Again not enough info has been reported by this paper. If you cannot report the whole story. If you dont know the facts. Dont print the story. I dont need to be entertained by the Andalusia Star. I want to see true honest reporting of the facts....... ya'll have a good day
