Commission should nix electronic bingo
Published Wednesday, June 17, 2009
Dear Editor,
In recent days it has been made quite clear through The Andalusia Star-News and WAAO that our county commission chairman appears to have had a change of heart concerning the current issue of electronic bingo in Covington County.
He is quoted as saying, “It’s my personal conviction — the deepest thing — that (electronic bingo is) not right.” Acting on his personal conviction, he has announced that he will call for a motion to be made to ban electronic bingo in Covington County at the next county commission meeting.
The current response of Mr. Sasser is a display of courage. He has announced his position to all the citizens of Covington County and has chosen to do what he understands is right and “legal.” Now is the time for our other commissioners to go “on the record” and announce their “convictions” concerning electronic bingo. If a man is not willing to state where he stands on an issue, then his silence infers that he condones whatever actions have taken place.
These men find themselves in the middle of a difficult situation. Every option must be explored to remedy our current economic crisis. Yet, some options promise great returns at the expense of long-term damage to our community. Electronic bingo is such an option. The price that our county would pay for such a remedy would far exceed the temporary benefits it might produce.
The electronic bingo option puts our county in a position where the gaming company wins and ultimately the citizens of Covington County lose. Not to mention that electronic bingo is “illegal” in our state and our county. Why can we not seek to find a solution where Covington County wins without giving any portion of our money to the gaming companies? When our commissioners meet again on June 22, it is my hope they will have the courage to ban electronic bingo and search for much healthier ways to aid our county.
Dr. Fred W. Karthaus III
Pastor, First Baptist Church of Andalusia

Thank you for your words. I believe that when we honor the Lord, He will bless us. Even in a situation like this.

Thank you, but we would rather keep Fred right here. Thanks for your stand Mr. Karthaus. There are many more of us who agree with you and we know that which is good and right is on our side.

i get so tired of all the preachers talking so bad about gambling and trying to get everyone to believe its such a sin, its total b.s. that they take such a stand on this issue, i wouldnt mind if covington county became a smaller version of biloxi, yes the owners would make a small fortune but in return the county and surrounding cities could get a hell of a lot more income than now, along with all the hotels, resturants and retail stores. its also going to take people to run this place so it will create JOBS! if all the so-called concerned people are this much against gambling why dont they try and make covington county a dry county, no gambling or alcohol. i bet the ABC people wouldnt like it if they lost all the alcohol revenue from covington county, the state makes a mega bucks from alcohol they sell, makes you wonder why the state is so much against gambling. i am a GOD fearing person, i am not an alcoholic or a compulsive gambler and i do not believe i will be cast into hell for a few drinks or going to a casino. if i am wrong, heaven is going to have very few people from covington county.

I have bought a lottery ticket before....I have played a slot machine before....but I still do not want legalized gambling in Covington County. That is a personal preference and everyone has a right to their opinion. The argument that it will bring in jobs, etc., is very valid but there is validity also in that it will bring in a lot of negative things as well. As far as church members going to Biloxi, I don't dispute that at all. Some church members are not against lotteries or gambling but some are. This is not necessarily a Christian issue, it's a moral issue and there will always be people on both sides of the fence. Again, thanks Rev. Karthaus for taking a stand with us.

Once again your trying to make choices for the majority. It should be a personal choice to gamble or not. If you gamble you will go elsewhere to do it, why not take advantage of the people that like to throw away their money. Let them throw it to Andalusia and Covington County. Turn it into something good! Take a bad situation and turn it into something great! But gambling is my choice not yours, quit taking away my rights and ability to think for myself.

Gambling is a personal choice and if you choose to do so, that is fine. However, I remain opposed to legalized gambling in Covington County. As for making choices for the majority, I can't make those choices, I am only one voice. I'm not convinced that the majority wants legalized gambling. I do know that the majority voted against a lottery one time in the past but the people's opinion may have changed since then. As for taking away rights, there is presently no right to legalized gambling in Alabama therefore no one can take away what you do not have.

Fred, Are you changing your mind like our Chairman of Commissioners?? Mrs. Grundy wrote that you were with THE GLORY SINGERS (the choir of senior citizens from First Baptist Church) and you ALL played BINGO for prizes. Just wondering what the difference is..........

Did the Glory Singers put money down to win the prizes? No, I would guess that they did not. If I were a "betting" person, I would wager that no money was passed from the players to the house. Therefore this would be like comparing apples to oranges.

A simple "Yes" "No" vote on this issue would put a stop to all this bickering. Why isn't "a vote" the issue? Why do we have to be bashing each others opinions instead of taking a vote and solving the issue? Just a thought.

Gasman; good choice. The Indians will appreciate you giveing a few $$. I have been to Atmore and when I visit family in Fl. I buy a lotto ticket. I dont have a problem with other States laws, and I love dogs but I dont want one in my house. There are 'times & places' for everything under the sun. God gives us everything, not one thing did he NOT make, its why and how we use them.Do I believe gambling is sin? Yes, I do. Am I a sinner? YES I am. I just do not want a Casino enviorment in my hometown. Not to say Andy is crime free but its not like it would be if we had machines avalible for temptation. Good Luck in Atmore and if you win........well give a portion to your Church or favorite chariety.

To all that seek to ONCE again USE religion as a point.... What has happened to seperation of church and state? Does that not apply anymore. Why is that churches pick and choose Biblical text to suit their needs, of more so to JUSTIFY their OWN SINS? Cov Cnty churches are nothing more than a Sunday morning meeting place of hippocrites, the TRUE meanings of going to church has totally been forgotten! As already been stated on here most are only bench warmers, and most can been seen out and about on Sat nights either in a bar or off cheating on their spouses OR ON A BUS TRIP TO MISSISSIPPI!!! Why is it that the CHURCH's can gamble or do raffles which is nothing more than gambling, they use an item to raise money for a certain area of the church, people BUY those tickets FOR A CHANCE at winning the item, IS THAT NOT GAMBLING???? At least at a casino you do not get hounded to BUY that chance or GIVE your money... it is YOUR choice. The gambling in churches give NO consideration to the people buying those chances, as long as they buy one.

Can someone please point out the specific verse(s) in the Bible that condemn gambling.
I'm not talking about the "love of money" or "two masters" verses. I see that alot of people have stated that gambling is a sin. If gambling is a sin, then I would like to see where it is stated as such in the Book.
I completely understand a person's personal convictions, and I am in no stretch of the imagination trying to say that it is wrong to have such convictions. However, I will also not tolerate someone bearing false witness, and saying something is quoted in the Bible when in fact it isn't.
Thanks,
Andy Griffin
