Navy man faces 10 counts of rape, sodomy

Published Thursday, June 18, 2009

A Covington County grand jury has returned a 10-count indictment against a U.S. Navy man who confessed in April to raping and sodomizing a girl under 12.

Robert Joseph Boswell, a 19-year-old Red Level resident, is charged with 10 Class “A” felonies — five counts of first-degree rape and five counts of first-degree sodomy — after a report was filed with the Sheriff’s Office in January, alleging the sexual contact.

He was arrested on those charges Wednesday and is currently being held in the Covington County Jail under an $850,000 bond.

Sheriff Dennis Meeks, in a previous statement, said it took investigators nearly three months to schedule an interview with Boswell because of his military commitment.

Meeks said the investigation “demonstrated that Boswell did indeed have unlawful and inappropriate sexual contact with the female minor child” and ended when Boswell confessed.

Meeks said Boswell took leave from the Navy to facilitate the interview, rather than face the consequences through the Navy’s chain of command; however, the military will make their determination in whether or not they will charge him with violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Reports indicate Boswell was stationed on the U.S.S. Enterprise in Norfolk, Va., and served as an aviation ordnanceman, a person responsible for the maintenance of guns, bombs, torpedoes, rockets and missiles and whose duties also include the stowing, issuing, and loading of munitions and small arms.

As of Thursday afternoon, the Navy’s public affairs office had not responded to questions about Boswell’s military status and whether or not he is currently facing any charges in a military court.

Good Lord...will it ever end? I sit and wonder and scratch my head in amazement the things, horrible things, adults will do to children, and continue about their lives as nothing bothers them. It's just so hard to understand how a person, male or female, can want to have an intimate relationship or encounter with a child! I just don't get it! It saddens me and truly brings tears to my eyes knowing that there are people out here among us that dare to touch an innocent child in such a way, and continue to live amongst us, serving in our military, preaching in our churches, delivering our mail....it's just such a sad country and truly is a sick one indeed....please, if anyone if abusing your child or you suspect it, REPORT it....this has got to stop!. I have three grandchildren and honest to God, if I ever heard of someone abusing them in any way, I would absolutely KILL them...I would...there's just no reason for that kind of filth and disgust to be walking among the innocent children of this world, this state, this county, our communties! I sit here with tears streaming down my face as I write this because my family was a victim of such hideous acts on underage kids, and nothing was ever done to this man....nothing! But the victims continue on in their adult lives scarred for life, unable to trust, unable to function normally due to the terrible scars that were left on them as a result of a maniac getting his jollies on small innocent children! I'm sorry, I just got caught up in the moment and I just get so emotional and so disgusted with the laws of this state that allow these monsters to roam our streets, schools, communities! And this guy, well, he is the armed services....

Ineedtobeheard.....what do you mean by your last statement? Surely you don't think this behavior has any link to the armed services or those who serve? Please clarify.
