AHS sweeps Straughn

Bulldogs beat Tigers 9-6, 13-3 in doubleheader

Published Thursday, March 5, 2009

Andalusia broke a 5-5 tie in the first game of a doubleheader against Straughn Tuesday night when Marcus Ingram had a 2-RBI double to give the Bulldogs the momentum to win the first game 9-6. In the second game, Andalusia held Straughn to only six innings, reaching the mercy rule in a 13-3 win.

“I thought we competed tonight,” Andalusia coach Jonathan Rasberry said. “I’m not going to say we necessarily played well. We made a lot of mistakes in the field, especially in the first game, but we overcame a lot of adversity throughout the game.”

In the second game, Andalusia’s Brent Shiver hit an RBI double to send Robert Woodall home to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the first.

Andalusia’s Dillon Manring reached third base on an error after his double and was soon sent home on an RBI single from Nate Mack in the second inning.

The scoring continued that same inning with an RBI double from Chris Kelley and a single from Brent Shiver to bring Mack, Ingram and Woodall home to make the score, 5-0.

Rasberry said he liked to see his players hit the ball in the second game.

“We came out in the second game and hit the ball real well and had good approaches at the plate,” he said. “We cut down some things here and there and I think we’re getting to where we need to get.

“I thought we concentrated on some things we made mistakes on in the first game,” he said. “I think we corrected some mistakes here and there that we made in the first game, so it’s good to see the kids make adjustments, especially how fast the game is at times. I thought we adjusted well. I think putting the ball in play in the second game helped us out a lot.”

Straughn got on the board in the top of the third inning when Drew Jones scored on an RBI single from Zack Stinson.

Straughn’s Josh Dewrell later scored on a double from Tyler Yelverton.

Andalusia got back on its scoring run in the fifth inning when Lee Enzor hit an RBI single to bring relief runner Justin Jernigan home.

Andrew Veasey then hit an RBI double to bring Enzor home and make the score 7-2. Manring hit a double to bring Veasey home.

In the sixth and final inning of the game, Straughn’s Cole Armstrong scored the last run for the Tigers on a triple from Luke Fussell.

Andalusia scored its final five runs in the sixth inning when Ingram scored on an unearned run with the bases loaded.

Veasey then knocked the ball to center field to bring in Jernigan, Shiver and Enzor. Veasey later scored to end the game on an RBI double from Shane Culbreth.

Andalusia will be traveling this weekend to Montgomery to play in the FCA Riverwalk tournament on March 6-7.

Straughn will be in Pleasant Home for the Covington County tournament.

I think Andalusia baseball is headed in a good direction, finally some discipline. It just needs given at appropriate times. I don't agree with sophmores starting when you have plenty of capable juniors and seniors, sometimes you have to teach and coach, but the juniors you have now have played a long time together and with the complement of the senior class you should have a heck of a team without the sophmores, those sophmores would benefit and learn more at the JV level, STOP THE COUNTRY CLUB BASEBALL!

I saw an Andalusia Star News reporter at the games, he must have been blind, there is no mention of Chris Kelley and the home run he hit at the early part of game 1. Here is your props Chris....GREAT JOB!

Tank, when has Andalusia not been a disciplined baseball team?

It is amazing to me that people think the reason a sophmore is starting is because the coach is worried about who the players parents are. I would think after the year the baseball team had with the head coach last year and all the complaining about the coach, parents would be glad that the new coach was putting the players on the field he felt would give the team the best chance to win! One thing we need to keep in mind is, this is not DADDY BALL/CITY BALL and that it should not matter the grade of the player or who the players parents are. It should be who is performing. Parents need to let the coach do his job and if a player or the players parents feel they are not getting the proper playing time, they should ask the coach what the Junior needs to do to get more playing time, instead of accusing him in the paper where he can't defend himself or his decisions. If you have an issue with the coach be a man or woman and discuss it with him don't hide behind the cover of the paper or internet.

This is hilarious!!!Sounds to me like there's only one solution...To heck with Daddy Ball...Let's have a Cage fight between the Mom's of the respective Sophs and Jrs. that are battling for a starting spot. This would be the most equitable solution to get the best players on the field!! Hey parents grow up and teach your kids the what
the Rules of Life are:
Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The
world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you
feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high
school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you
get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your
Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they
called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so
don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how
cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain
forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try
delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and
losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have
abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES
as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the
slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get
summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people
actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one. Signed Bill Gates

Its about the team not jr or soph or sr. the team, the unit, the group, the team, the team, the team. we must focus on the team. that is the coaches job to put the best team on the field. Our kids will be much better when we stop coaching from the sidelines and focus and pull for the team. go bulldogs

I play on Varsity, and everyday is a competition for a spot. Coach tells us everyday there are open spots, and whoever wants them more will get it. It doesn't matter what grade your in. Heck coach could start a freshman. Its all about who hustles more and who gets the job done. So no one needs to say Coach is playing country club baseball because he isn't. He is simply playing the player that shows heart and and shows that he could help the team during the game. In my opinion Coach is one of the best coaches I've ever had. Someone who finally could bring Andalusia back to what we are known for. I think if we stop finding stuff to fuss about and try to look for positive things this season will end up great. We have one goal so far, and that is to win area, and coach is going to play whoever performs the best so we do win.
