Director will remain at E911

Published Saturday, May 16, 2009

The county must hire a new emergency management agency director after current director Kristi Stamnes announced Friday she will become the county’s fulltime E911 director.

Stamnes’ decision comes after the commission voted to end a nine-year agreement combining the position of EMA and E911 director in an effort to save an estimated $16,000-$24,000 annually.

Last week, Stamnes was given the option of becoming a fulltime employee of either EMA or E911. Now, her decision leaves the county with a vacant position.

“There were many factors that prompted me to choose E911,” Stamnes said. “I felt like it was the best decision for me and my family.”

Stamnes will continue to serve as EMA director until the county hires a replacement.

To do that, county administrator Brenda Petty said the county will follow “standard policy” and post the vacancy internally to allow current county employees the opportunity to apply if they meet the qualifications.

At present, Petty said it is unknown what those qualifications might be.

“I feel our current job description should be updated in light of new EMA and FEMA requirements,” Petty said. “I’ve been in contact with state EMA to assist me with more current requirements for the position.”

Petty said if no acceptable applicant can be found within the county service, the job will be posted on the Alabama Job Link website to allow outside applicants to apply.

“Neither of these postings will take place until the commissioners have approved the job description and set the salary range, so I’m not sure when it will be posted,” she said.

Previous discussions have called for a June deadline so that both directors would be in place before hurricane season begins.

It is unknown when the commission will move the EMA operations from the E911 building to the county administration building on Hillcrest Drive.

County officials say the majority of the savings will be seen by not replacing the fulltime assistant EMA director since a current county employee will be moved into the now-vacant position of part-time assistant director.

Festus: thanks for looking out for us...now...my question is this...after all these years why is there not a job description for what Ms Petty stated above? Who and whom is responsible for that...her (Petty) job is to "administrate" or to make sure that all this stuff is typed, copied, posted, and put in a folder accessible to the public...why is she asking for outlines on qualifactions, she is suppossed to have this on record. She is taking her "qs" from Nancy Pelosi, but, this ain't California and we are not in the 9th Circuit...so, Ms Petty, just post the job...I am qualified to do it, I have certification from the COE, and have 30+years experience, and, I recently wrote, for the city, the SOP for the aftermath of a Cat 4 natural disaster, based on local and federal guidelines...guess that makes me the winner. Now, Tony Wells would do a good job, based on his background, to respond and access damages...he has that experience in the insurance business...forget the political ties...it is a here and now situation...we all know it is going in that direction, so, just give it a chance. "nuff said.

GO OUTLAW GO! But you won't get the job - neither will I who also is fully credentialled in emergency response and management. I don't have the years under my belt, but I do have experience. Trust me - this is nepotism at it's best - just watch and see. I pray I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

That solved alot of problems. The employees at E-911 wanted Kristi to go. That was the whole point but I guess now they have to endure the same old crap they have been putting up for a long time now. Our county leaders are not good for any reasonable decisions that need to be made but are responsible for making a mess out of them instead. Will there ever be commissioners that will get the courage (to say it nicely) that will get rid of Brenda? I guess not. Lynn, we all like you but you will turn out to be a one time chairman. Until you ante up on promises that were made to the citizens, then consider those votes gone. As much as you don't want to hear it, White is still making some decisions behind closed doors. Believe it or not!!!

No, I will not get the job, nor, do I want it...I'm retired and the work I did for the city (mentioned above) was done under a Gov't grant, so, it never costs us any money...CCC2008 again you pop up but do not offer the salary gauge you say you have...the one in ref to Ms Petty? Just post it, so everyone can get on with their lives...if I had access to that figure, I would post it.

Tony Wells sold life insurance and who took his children who were in 4H and FFA shows to show their live stock. This somehow qualified him to run a horse arena. He mismanaged it, so we need to find him another job. He has no qualification to be EMA Director or to run the flood insurance program (which requires an engineering background) either. So I guess when the next disaster hits while he is home in bed, there will be nobody to turn on the sirens. The county is in a big mess now and it is fixing to get a lot worse.

I thought with a new Commisssion we would have a CHANGE in the way things were done around here. I see now the only change is the name of the people who still make these BAD decissions.

YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR ARE A DIRCTOR OR OWNER OF A BUSINESS YOU HAVE TO MAKE ALOT OF DECISIONS. THESE DECISIONS ARE NOT GOING TO BE LIKED BY EVERYONE. SEEMS LIKE THE EMPLOYEES AT 911 WHO WANTED STAMNES TO GO JUST SIMPLY DID NOT LIKE HER DECISIONS. WELL, WORK IN HER PLACE FOR A WHILE AND SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL LIKE THE DECISIONS YOU'LL MAKE OVER 10 YEARS. I THINK THIS BOILS DOWN TO PURE JEALOUSLY!!! YOU PEOPLE NEED TO GROW UP.
