Florala High school principal Donny Powell crowned Brianna Thames, Florala's 2009 homecoming queen. Thames was escorted by her father, Danny Thames.

Turnovers can cost a team.

That’s what happened with Florala on Friday night as the Wildcats suffered a bitter homecoming defeat to Ariton, 24-8.

“We had four turnovers,” Florala coach Stan Gooden said. “We had two in the red zone that hurt us.”

Despite the loss, Gooden said he could draw one positive from the game.

“Our defense stepped up and probably played the best game of their season,” he said.

Florala’s Zach Fleming threw the only touchdown pass to Jonathan Burleson on the night. The Wildcats managed the two-point conversion attempt on a pass to David Goodwin.

“We had some improvement,” Gooden said. “Take away those turnovers, we might have had a different ball game. We played well though. (Turnovers) was a big key in the ball game.”

Ariton’s Craig Sanders helped his team to the win, scoring two touchdowns for the Purple Cats.

Gooden said he got what he looking for in that his team played a “complete” game.

“Our kids played hard and played with a lot of heart,” he said. “They did what we asked them to do. We were better than we were last week.

“You keep hearing the same thing from me over and over,” he said. “If it’s not one thing one week, it’s something different the next week. We’re going to get back to work on Monday to get ready for Pleasant Home.

“It’s going to be bragging rights next week. They have a good football team and we’re improving. I think we’ll be ready for them next week.”

The Wildcats (1-7, 0-6 in Class 1A, Region 2) travel next Friday night in Pleasant Home.

not so such much about talent as a lack of players in right positions and very very poor practice. another big reason is that plenty of kids just simply don't play. weather it is because of coaching or parents that would rather them run free and drink all night. Florala has enough players and TALENT this year to have a winning record but the lack of proper practice and play calling has killed them. They looked a lot better last night but they needed to be there at game one. And yes everyone in the county knows we do not protect the outside. Haven't for a few years.....

It's amazing how most of you can't support these kids. You jump on the computer and try to tear these kids up. Maybe if some of you did pool together and supported the team (coach, coach assistants, and the players) then the program could benefit from this, rather than tear down. Maybe some of you need to come to practice, I only see about a few select parents there regularly at practice. Rain, snow, sleet or shine. How about financially contributing to the program, so the program can run and operate efficiently. How about being apart of the solution and not the problem. So blame who you may, with whatever makes you feel better about yourself or Florala. But when the rubber hits the road your still apart of the problem! This is today not the 1973 team 12-1! Only want to win at all costs. If you like it so much then rent the movie. So ask yourself what you have invested into these group of men of Florala. Don't hide behind some screen name on the computer and say things as if your somekind of football hero or analyst! Surely not about you! Practice is after school at 3:15. I'm sure it will be the same group of parents there. In whichif you parents are reading you're greatly appreciated at what you do for the boys at practice!

I think I counted 19 players dressed out for this last game!
That's not enough to schrimage at practice....You need at least 22 players to field an offence and a defence and call yourself a team. How the heck can you expect to win when you do not have enough players.

BTW.. the other team had four (4) coaches...

Where is the balance?
Where is the community support?
Why such a lack of personal?
This situation reflects on the school board and the community more that the coaching staff. They have NOTHING to work with!

Okay Mr Floknos i have watched you post on al.com for a while and you always have something bad to say about Florala sports and it is always the kids never the coach. It is more than obvious that you know nothing of the younger florala kids that have always won at pee wee. All you want to do is hide behind your screen name and cause trouble from the fools point of view. Up until the last 2 games we have been running the same 4 plays over and over. On defense we give up 50 and still no changes over and over. What good does it do for parents to show up at practice, the coaches could care less about help or getting better. We also have 4 coaches but only 2 seem to be involved. They never appear to get the other 2 invoved or even ask an opionion from them much less a parent. Maybe behind closed doors, which we seem to have a lot of lately with the parents and players. Nobody is asking for them to be #1 just practice hard and I know for a fact they could have had a winning season this year. Practice is nothing but a joke. Lots of players standing a round watching others. We don't practice O-line blocking correctly or flowing to the ball on defense. The kids do look better now than at game one but they should of been this good a long time ago. We have better players watching in some cases than playing. WHY!!!!! Maybe it is age or senior or whatever. At this 1A school we need all good talent playing all the time. Very poor player position and talent magaement. As for you Floknos just try and keep your panties clean and stay the heck out of Flo-town!!!!!

"Oh yea of little faith" Check the roster for correct number of players. 30 on the roster 7 Seniors Yes, Florala has some young players, but I think each team can only field 11 players at a time. Right? So, first off I think the Florala Wildcats have the best equipment and a great football field as well as a very supportive ALL SPORTS CLUB. I do know for a fact that a lot of alumni were in attendance last night at Homecoming and the football team performed a heck of alot better than any previous home game this year. But for the two fumbles each near the end zone, the score would have been 24-22 or tied up 24 - 24. In poker you play the hand your delt, so in the case of the wildcats I am just saying lets develop the talent that we have. Put in the best players, but make sure all get a chance to play to develop future teams. It's seems odd to me that when Florala gets inside the 20 yard line threatning to score, their plays seem to get sent in very cautiously / conservative. I was told at the game by a school official that the Coach's teach the line to "block the hole" on defense ... hmmm Basic Football Defense dictates that the defensive line should penetrate the line of scrimmage in an effort to get at the quaterback or tackle the ball runner. Also, the Defensive Ends should penetrate 3 yards or so and turn the play inside toward the Defensive line... Why not get back to BASIC FOOTBALL, after all its not rocket science. It's where we teach SUCCESS and a Winning Attitude. Teams perform like they practice. So, Florala needs to take a look at how they utilize their practice time on the field. If your just gonna lecture while the players stand around, you might as well take them in the classroom, play the previous weeks video to discuss improvement and highlight mistakes that should be worked on by performing appropriate drills in practice. Fumble prevention should be top of the list for Monday Coach. Or at the least fumble recovery...
Blocking techniques should be included as well. NO PLAYER should be standing around doing nothing during Football practice. Try to develop in them a sense of urgency thru motivational drills, say belly flops or mountain climbers and pushups to discipline the slackers & glory seekers. They should feel that they have earned the right to wear the Green by physical conditioning. And Coach, I know that they can learn more than 4 plays, come on...
I wonder if I volunteered to be an assistant Coach, would I be allowed to teach agressive FOOTBALL techniques that lead to ah.. efective blocking, tackling, holding on to the football, and result in touchdowns...
I wonder....

again...info....info....30 man roster includes all 7th and 8th grade players that started the year. Many are gone with the jv over before it started. With 7 seniors, 1 has never played, 2 out for the year hurt. Then only 3 11th graders and 5 10th....you do the math....young is an understatement but still the play calling on both sides of the ball is poor at best. I will concede that it has improved but still not where it should be. O that is, D has practiced a better D but don't use it enough. Volunteering not allowed at FHS...oh....useless you know the right folks.....good intentions do not matter

Maybe you guys that do nothing but complain about the players, coaches and community need to be a bigger part of it. Let me just say if you think you can coach any better then why don't you step up to the plate! or did you not finish college and get a degree. I personally know that the coaches put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into the football team, not to mention the time it takes away from there own family. so tell me what excatly what have you done for the wildcats?

FYI I personally attending the Monday afternoon practice session and let me tell you the line Coach is awesome. Not only was instruction being given it was reinforced with the Coach getting down in the trenches and demonstrating the correct way to execute blocking.. BRAVO !!! for the Line Coach. Lots of bull in the ring...one on one, two on one and block one then down field to block a second time was drilled. The line hit the 5 man blocking sled and almost turned the thing over one time. AWESOME. THESE CATS are fired up and hungry for Victory. My hats off to the line Coach in hopes that this kind of personal instruction will continue.
All the Best to the Wildcats !!! Keep up the hard work...The more you sweat in practice the better you execute in the game. The Backs and Ends broke out and ran thru some passing practice too.
To wind up a great practice, the Cats performed a real time scrimmage with full offense and full defense teams performing full speed plays. Keep up the sense of urgency CATS and lets put these next two games in the WIN Column.... GO WILDCATS !! Great WORK players...and special thanks to the line Coach...There will be plenty of time to get off a pass and plenty of room to run the ball in the future if they continue to practice like they did this afternoon...

the biggest problem for the wildcats is the tremendous loack of talent. for those of yall who think its the coach, vince lombardi or bear bryant couldn't do any better with what we have to work with. yeah it might help a little bit but we jus DONT have much talent. and yeah mostly 2 of the coaches do most of the work, but each coach has something that they do to help the team.

Floknos wrote: "Might be a good idea to get Coach some new assistants. I know for a fact that one of them never played in high school ball. He graduated from there. Nothing but a waste of space on the sidelines and practice field."
News Alert! Info wrong! There's no coaches there that graduated from Florala. Just thought you knew it all. Maybe you should do some more research before you make yourself look even worse! And it's also amazing how you little boys resort to the sucking tactics. Real mature I must say! But yeah grizzy all the coaches help do something for the team and Coach Gooden has done well with the current circumstances. Everyone thinks they know what's going on, do you really? Floknos thought he did with his comment earlier mentioned. Support the coaching staff as they continue to work with these kids. You run these coaches off, who you gonna replace them with. It's not pee-wee football (daddy ball)!

Some people need to get a grip and wise up to who is and isn't coaching or maybe even what planet they occupy.
