County discusses cars, carcasses

Deer disposal, parking, among topics

Published Monday, October 26, 2009

Hunting club members will have to wait until the next commission meeting before getting an answer on whether the engineer’s office will continue the practice of digging pits for deer carcasses.

Commissioner Harold Elmore brought up the topic for discussion but county engineer Darren Capps said he was unsure as to its legality.

“We’ve been doing it since I started and I know I did three last year,” Elmore said. “We just don’t want to see (the dead deer) on the sides of the road and in our creeks.”

County attorney Julie Moody said there is a health aspect to the problem, “especially if they’re throwing them in the waterways.”

Commissioner Bragg Carter said that last year, 17 carcasses were removed at one time last year from under a bridge in his district. They were later buried, he said.

Capps will research the legality of the issue and Moody will research the health aspect. Both will report their findings at the next meeting.

In other business, the commission:

• Designated the following as employee parking lots: the lot behind the courthouse, the lot between James and James Attorneys and the Murphy Building, and the old annex site.

• Adopted a new flood plain ordinance.

• Approved a retail beer license for The Store in Onycha.

• Voted to lease six new patrol cars for the Sheriff’s Office.

• Approved three routine resolutions for the Covington Area Transits System (CATS).

• Voted to spend $33,000 for renovations at the maintenance shop on Hillcrest Drive.

I tan deer hides and my dogs are on a raw meat diet. We are hunters and use deer meat to feed our dogs as well as living off deer all year long ourselves. Just call me and I will come pick up the deer as long as they are fresh kills for dog meat and hides.

I hate to see anything go to waste.

The other wildlife will eat the carcasses as well. I don't see why they should be buried at all. Just drag them into the woods so you don't have to look at them on the side of the road.

they always got something to say about deer hunters, what about all these farmers around here that get a permit from the state and kill hundred's of deer AT NIGHT and leave the laying all over there fields. i mean really i see dead dogs, cats, armadillos, coons, etc.all over the road ways .there no different then deer.but does the county worry about that? NO . how about worring about paving some roads instead of kicking the deer hunters!!!!!

I wonder when they are going to discuss getting the Deputies more money.

Andyman, you hit the nail on the head. We need the roads paved or at least graveled. Our kids in district four travel on roads that are pitiful. The ditches are higher than the roads, cutting them in half. A tractor is a safer mode of travel after heavy rains on some roads. When Johnny Castleberry retired our roads went to crap. If you look at distict two around the lakes the roads that five to ten people lived on were paved. The developers made money off the tax payers backs, selling the properties at three times the value of unpaved roads. I hope Darren can stop the "business" of select paving and pave the road of all and not the select few. We have a great crew of workers but they can only do what is allowed. I don't what distict you reside in, but I'm sure all are in need. Maybe instead of repaving, let them sit awhile and PAVE some dirt.

I seem to recalll that Darren used some "emergency" funds to pave the road to his house.

bottom line hunters, don't leave carcass on the side of the road. be decent and at least move it into the woods.
