Lockhart man arrested for sexual abuse, assault

Published Friday, February 5, 2010

The U.S. Marshals located and arrested a Lockhart man Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting and abusing a young girl over a two-year period.

Omer Stokes, 37, was taken into custody at 1:15 p.m. by the Marshal’s’ Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force at his father’s residence.

Reports indicate Stokes’ alleged victim was 10 years old when the June 2006 incidents began, all of which occurred both in Alabama and in northwest Florida.

In a press release by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office it is reported Stokes allegedly punched the girl in the mouth for what he described as “being sassy.”

Stokes is currently being held without bond in the Covington County Jail and should be extradited back to Florida where he will face charges of sexual lewd or lascivious conduct of a person under 16 years old and cruelty toward a child without great harm.

He is innocent until proven guilty!

Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. This is a complicated issue and unless you know both sides and all the facts keep your comments about "he should die" to yourself. There are several people who have been falsely accused and their lives have been made a living nightmare because of inconsiderate jerks, who pass judgement without using their pea brains to think before they speak. Remember what goes around comes around and it may be you one day whether you are guilty or not. If he is guilty he will be punished but if he is not guilty his life is ruined already, so let the courts decide and leave him and his family alone.

We should never want someone to die. Suffering in prision is always better. I do agree everyone is entitled to a fair trial. I also think there are many accused and sentenced of sexual assault without proper evidence who are innocent. I am willing to wait.

sweetnannie, suffering???? LMAO Those people that are incarcerated live better than the average tax paying citizen. They have access to gym facilities, a library, three meals a day, cable television, air conditioning, not to mention a free college education or in most cases a High School diploma. Now is that suffering? Sure they can't always be with their families and they are limited to a fenced in area. They don't have to worry about how they are going to pay any bills. They straddle their families with hardships for the choices that they have made in their lives. I don't call that "suffering". I agree, innocent until proven guilty. When proven guilty, then he should die a horrible and miserable death, for the heartache and the willful mistreatment of a child.

who do any of you think you are to pass judgement or decide the fate of this man? quit playing God because He is the only one that is allowed to pass judgement!! none of you know the whole story or the truth about what happened so you have no right to run your mouth about this man or child... whether it happened or not this man will answer to God bout it not to you and if it didnt happen you will be the ones answering to God for passing judgement

Seriously people? You should all think about what you're saying before you type it. None of you know that what this man has been alledged of is in any way true. If you knew him personally you'd feel way different about his situation. He is a very nice man who happens to have bad luck with people screwing him over. So honestly ya'll just need to chill out and quite posting such hateful comments about things you're clueless over!

I can say this..... and I have it to back it!
Due to experiences, I am not at all surprised about this at all!

I applaud ktbird and laplowgirl on their posts. And I also congratulate the Star News on removing the posts that have comments suggesting that the accused should be hung without a trial (or something akin to that).

Today, Monday, 3/1/10, the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing arguments in the case of Jeffrey Skilling, the former Chief Operating Officer of Enron. The basis of the appeal is that Skilling did not receive a fair trial because of pre-trial publicity, including comments on the internet. There was even a song composed that said "drop the s" in "Skilling," implying that he should be killed. As a result of these prejudicial comments and stories, the Court will decide whether Skilling's conviction should be overturned.

Come on folks, there is a better way to display your redneck ignorance than to post barbaric comments about people accused of crimes on the Star News blog. (Suggestion: go to church and declare you have accepted J.C. as your personal lord and savior, that works also).

Estragon: Another post demanding tolerance from others while you remain intolerant yourself. You never miss an opportunity to turn any subject into Christian bashing. At least you are consistent.

Said it once, will say it again. IF found guilty, **WHACK** Castration.

Posted by MrHaney65 (anonymous) on March 5, 2010 at 6:11 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Castration, sounds good, but. The person will still be able to abuse, molest.

Ok, first off, I agree with innocent until proven guilty. I agree that this man's life is ruined regardless of whether or not he did it because of all the publicity. But, if he DID do it, then he deserves to die. I support the death penalty 100%. I also believe that we should take punishment a step further with punishing the criminal the same way they ruined the other's life. Rape the rapists, beat the wife beaters and so on and so forth. Also, if he didn't do it, the girl that accused him needs to be sent to prison-she was going to send him to prison. That will make her think twice before falsely accusing another person. However, nobody has all the facts and nobody probably ever will except the 2 people that are involved. And as far as jalexander65322 saying that people don't have the right to pass judgement or decide this man's fate.. Well, you are just wrong. The constitution protects our right to do just that "...Shall be judged by a jury of your peers..." It's not playing God, it's our duty as citizens of the United States. Everybody is entitled to their own opinions and just about everybody has an opinion. So to those of you who keep telling people to keep their comments to themselves, well... The rest of us say no thank you, we enjoy our freedom.

Unfortunately the allegations against this man are true. I believe he should get what he deserves.

Has anyone else noticed the number of sex offender arrests compared to the population of Covington County seems a might disproportionate when compared with other areas? Maybe they just don't get the same attention in other areas.
