I have lived in several states during my life and not one has the property tax base that Patrick is suggesting.
I have been wondering why Alabama was broke, because it doesn't seem that long ago that the state won the big law suit against the oil companies and are now getting a percentage of the oil monies from the gulf. I know there is not the same amount of oil coming out of those wells as the ones in Alaska or gas out of the ground in North Dakota but both the states are in the black. We are living in the red and it can't just be property taxes.
They said they were going to put it in a rainy day fund and from what I read and hear that is almost gone.

I am confused with your post Patrick. Are you saying you are for the firing because then the fired teachers will get a chance to go to another states school system and learn new teaching skills?
I agree with you that tenured teachers will also be loosing their job; at least that is what I read the Principle of Opps School said in a news article the other day. Of course the paperwork for those firings will take a few years to push through so other non-tenured teachers will have to go in the mean time. Then about the time the firing paperwork is complete the budget crisis will be over and we will need all available teachers. What a great system for teacher moral and quality child education.

I find it interesting that the state is willing to spend a bunch of our tax dollars to provide picture ID parking passes for those that qualify for handicap parking. I don't see how that one step will stop those that use those spots illegally--they will continue to do so in the future.
To me it is like the laws that say "It is really against the law to use or sell drugs within 150 feet, or whatever distance it is, of a school building. To me that says it is sort of OK to use or sell drugs any where else.
The new pass makes it "really" illegal for all those that do not qualify for the handicap spots to park there. Yeah right!
I say if the person parked in the handicap spot is seen running into the store, the store should have a tire-lock device they could stick on the car until the police could find time to respond. I think most of the people that do park in those spots, park there because they are just running in for a quick purchase, so slow them down and next time they will think twice about saving an extra 20 steps to pick up their items.

scoop and loyal: I spent my big money on extra socks and sweat suits this past fall so my energy bill would make ya both cry. Just remember to get a couple bigger sizes so when you put them over the smaller sizes you will not be uncomfy.
Those folks at SEAGD showed great community spirit. Thank you one and all.

Patrick do you really think that .50 cents an hour is a reasonable pay? I don't, but that does not mean I think that when you hire someone to mow your lawn you should have to pay 50 bucks an hour either. Of course I don't know how big your lawn is so that may be a fair price. Your statement to me shows me that you do not believe in moderation--just ridicule.
I am one that knows there are limits to what a certain job is worth. All jobs are not worth 50 bucks an hour--some are only worth $7. Why do you feel you have to ridicule me or any opinion instead of stating your opinion? Just trying to figure you out.

Patrick, I do agree with you about the low wage and low tech industry. This I see as a good thing. If the wages get too high then the jobs will move to China or other cheap labor spots around the world. Then we would be forced to continue paying the people unemployment benefits for jobs that are no longer here.

“If we are funded at the (2010) prorated amount, and if we can’t come up with a way to supplement (the budget) with local funding – it means we have to cut eight to nine teachers.”
I find that statement confusing because they seemed to have been able to pay these 8-9 teachers out of this years budget but find it impossible to do it next year. Were the payraises that high--if so maybe they should take a look at the teacher contracts during these tough times.

outlaw, they had a bag full of paper they could use but that would mean the bank would have to launder the money before putting it back in circulation. Is that legal?
scoop-biscuit, I agree they do seem to have sorry equipment but the placement of their camera sure doesn't help--even I know you don't take a picture with a bright light or reflective plate facing the camera.

I hope this works out better then the build/rent deal that was made at the airport. Don't remember all the facts with that deal but if memory serves it didn't turn out in favor of the county.
