super-again, you should check yoir facts. The city completed its $500,000 per year for 10 years contribution for the new elementary school in 2009. There was no agreement that the city would pay anything in addition to that $5,000,000, however, starting in 2005, the city gave the school board 2.5 mils of ad valorem tax revenue, which amounts to approximately $250,000. So what you are saying the city should do is exactly what the city did 5 years ago.

super---you are dead wrong. Not one cent of school money went into city hall. Get your facts straight.

DarrylDavis-- Since you are so handy with a dictionary, look up the word "ignorant." I believe that your comment on ad valorem taxes fits that definition to a tee. You see the people of Alabama, the 67 counties and the munys VOTED to impose these taxes on ourselves so we might have public schools, decent roads and streets, police and fire protection and the many other services provided to us by the various govermental bodies. If you are ready to do without these services and facilities ( in other words, go back to the wilderness ) then perhaps you need to move to an uncivilized section of the world where you can fend for yourself.

gasman, You are flat wrong in your blog where you state that PowerSouth does not use coal to generate electricity, rather, you say it uses natural gas. 80% of PowerSouth's generation is coal fired. Besides that, natural gas is a CO2 emitter as well and will be covered by this proposed federal legislation. If this cap and trade legislation is passed into law, we in the southeast can expect a 20-50% increase in our electric rates.
This is a serious matter for us, and you should know what you are talking about before you spout off on this site. Some folks may take what you write here as factual, and a mis-statement of facts is different from a statement of opinion. You are intitled to hold and espouse whatever your opinion may be, but when you state something as fact you owe it to others to make sure that the facts you state are correct.

MrSensibility, The purpose of the moument is not to attract tourists, even though it might have that effect as a side benefit, its purpose will be to honor those thousands of men and women whose work there made this a better place for all of us to live. Besides, according to what Mayor Johnson told me this mourning, this project will be funded with private gifts and donations. I hope you will particpate in this very worthwhile project instead of looking for some obscure reason to criticize it.

I just spoke with Mayor Johnson about the idea of some sort of memorial/recognition park at the Alatex site, and he is already all over this. He told me that he is exploring funding for such a project and welcomes anyone who may be interested to participate in this as committee members to call his office, 334-222-3313, and leave their name, address and phone numbers.
I think this is a great way to pay tribute to the thousands of working men and women who laid the foundation for so many of us .

How many folks do you think might be interested in a memorial/recognition park near the entrance of the Alatex property, where you could purchase engraved brick pavers to honor loved ones who worked at the Alatex/Andala. Such a park could include a bronze statute of a sewing machine operator and perhapes Mr. Scherf, Sr.?

galatians5_6biv, you are correct. The utility board has no direct obligation to pay these bonds. They are the sole legal responsibility of the city.

super-in fact the city has and continues to do more for the school board than you have called for in that the city began this additional $250,000 annual payment 4 years before it completed its 10 year $500,000 annual elementary payments. Seems to me you owe the city an apology.
