I never get surprised when reading the comments on articles that the Star News publishes. It's like some of you don't give a damn about how kids are raised in our county. This is not the 70's anymore. We are a day an age that we know more about how these drugs affect the body alot more than we did then. Do the kids have a choice to be in a situation like that? The answer is no, so that is why they are removed from the environment they are in. My guess would be that some of you posters are all for marihuana to be legal. Guess what, it's not and until then the top priority of the police is to rid this crap off the streets and out of the homes. Some say the bond is too high. I don't think when people do the types of things the bond can't be high enough. And, the people that are coming into these houses with the children are not always fine upstanding citizens of the community. If you want to make your children potheads by what you do in your home, that is your choice. It's a wrong choice but don't criticize the ones who try and make a bad situation better. God bless the kids.

supprtVets, because they are "former deputies" does not mean they are disgruntled. I believe they had attempted to resolve this before they left with no success. Both went to better paying jobs that includes still being in law enforcement that still enjoy their profession. They would have continued at the Sheriff's Office if it would have been fair pay for all and not just for some (which are few). Promises had been made to the deputies that were never seen through. And, promises continue to be made to the rest of them that they will never see. My hats off to you guys for not taking the bull that has been dished out for years to it's employees and I hope that every other employee with the county jumps on the law suit also for is rightfully theirs.

Some very interesting posts this time. I am proud to see so many people standing up for these deputies and not putting them in the category with the criminals as I have seen before.
I agree that the deputies need compensation for hours that they work and if it is already ruled on with the FSLA, then where is the problem at? I will tell you. The problem lies with the county commission that has cheated so many workers of the Sheriff's Office that it now seems natural for them to do it. The deputies should be paid for hours over they work and not paid in compensatory time. When they are paid in compensatory time and take some off then a deputy is called in and guess what happens. Yes, more comp time for that deputy. It's a never ending story. Paying deputies instead of comp time for their overtime is what our chairman told them he wanted. But, instead of staying with the monetary overtime when he was elected, that is one of the first things he changed was implementing the comp time. Instead our money has been put into building a fence behind the county commission building that from what I see will serve no purpose. Drive behind the building and look for yourselves. That money could have been put back into its employees. And, I bet that the county agrees to put money into the airport to help them out. I am just saying that the county officials are making bad decisions and I hate to say this but this group is making worse ones than any I have seen yet.
Hammer said "Some one should ask the Sheriff if he wants to pay them or not". Some might not believe it but the ultimate decision comes from the county commission. The Sheriff has some say so in the paying of his deputies but to a certain point. I do urge Sheriff Meeks to support his deputies in what is right for them. Remember, it wasn't that long ago when you were just a deputy yourself and would have battled with your fellow co-workers and not against them. Believe in them and what is right. They put their trust in you to do the job they do for you and the community and with your support, no matter what the commission thinks, you will lock in their respect and support from those that work for you.
I not only thank the men and women of law enforcement for what you do but to all in any job capacity that makes a difference in our lives.

It's interesting to see some finally standing up and realizing that we should take more interest in choosing who we elect. It is a shame that the deputies are lower paid than neighboring departments. The other departments are set up on pay scales that give them more than a cost of living raise. Usually that is all the employees at the county get. I personally know alot of them and the same complaint is always the pay, but hang with the job because thats here their heart is. Obviously none of them do it for the money as we all see. Some of them have never got but a cost of living raise and have been there for years. The county has said numerous times that a pay scale is in place but always fails to produce it. When hired for the county, their is no set rate, and they are hired at whatever suits the county administrator. And, the previous posts are right. Brenda does have to approve what each makes. She sets this knowing that with her salary that she has nothing to lose but a pay raise for herself. It's like the employees keep getting punished about pay because Brenda has failed and let the county get into this money bind. If everyone starting calling the commission office and voiced their opinions about a pay scale and inquired what the employees make, maybe they will realize that we are tired of it. Remember, it's our money that they are spending. They seem to forget that. It's our money that Brenda is getting paid.

andalusiainquirer, the same guy was not busted twice in a month. The newspaper said that the Jones guy got busted and one guy in Red Level. I believe the story they are referring to in Red Level was the guy that had plants growing in front of his house where it could be seen from the street.
Hats off to you guys at DTF. Hope you get anyone and everyone that involves themselves in illegal drugs. Thanks for the good work.

Now that was a good story. This is the kind of stories that make us from Alabama who we are. News articles like this makes me feel proud to be from Covington County. Walt wrestling a gator is still cracking me up picturing that.

TEAM_GREG, I guess you fall under that movie quotes "You ate to many paint chips as a kid", and "You must have live under too many power lines". Dude, you are lost as lost can be. You open your mouth and run it just like Greg and only $#%^ pours out of it. I know the whole story and obviously you don't from what I have read. I was talking to an officer the other day who told me that he was on his way to getting areested for not testifying in a case that he believed the defendant was being done wrong by Greg (yes your DA). The officer told me that Greg said "You don't know how much political pressure I am getting out of Montgomery to prosecute this kid". The officer tried to do what he felt was fair. This officer has never lied to me or any other person I know and I had heard this rumor until finally running into him the other day. So, you think that things are not politically motivated? If you do then you are gullable. Hell I am not even a police or work in that field but can find out more than some just by asking. You look at a price at the grocery store before you buy it, why not look at who you are voting for before you vote. It's that simple. I have had a couple of Dealings with Mr. Merrell, some good and some bad, but I will definitely support him for DA. Good luck to the families that lost their jobs. Their is a lot of us that are standing behind you.

GetAGrip, I may be privy to information and I know you are since you work under Greg (matter of fact outside his door), so I see why you would defend him. Thats your choice but at least report the truth about what happens in that office. You know as well as I do that pleas happen everyday and is not consistent on each one. To sum it up, two people get arrested for the same charge, same criminal background, same everything. But, each gets a separate deal. One goes to jail and the other gets probation. That is a bunch of BS and you know it. I am all about making criminals pay but I think this is the reason that most people are losing trust in the Judicial System. I believe it is time for a change in that office.

One thing that was not mentioned was the investigator at the Sheriffs Office that actually investigated and built the case. Don't know which one of you guys it was, but good job. During this time politics kind of takes away from the ones who actually do the job. Again good job for putting this man away.
