biscuitsandhoovergravy, I am a school teacher in Covington County and I assure you I don't make $48,906 per year teaching. I, like many other teachers, actually work two jobs.

I was a member of the LBW Ensemble with Woodie from 1986-1988, & I can still hear him singing the "Louisiana Saturday Night" lyrics he was so well-known for at that time. As stated in the comment above, he always had a smile on his face, and he was so much fun to be around. I am very proud of his accomplishments as an artist, and he will be truly missed.

Who cares if Straughn lost to Andalusia? For crying out loud - it's a high school game not the Super Bowl! At least at Straughn we can make improvements to our facilities without having to charge for parking like they do at Andalusia!

Oh you're right about brothers/sisters, sister-in-laws, etc. being teachers at Straughn, but as for how they got their jobs, I would hope it's the same way I got mine as an educator - because I was qualified for the job, I interviewed for it, and I was chosen. I can assure you I didn't get my job because of any relatives or best friends that might have chosen me. Yes, the principal is the son of a FORMER superintendent and he was not a principal when his father was superintendent. Also, the assistant principal of SHS, the principal of SMS, and the principal of SES have NO relatives working/teaching within either of the three Straughn schools.

As a matter of fact, I have a friend who teaches at Straughn who had a daughter graduate from college with a teaching degree this year, but she has yet to be offered a job. She's interviewed for several jobs, substituted at either WS Harlan, Andalusia Elementary, Straughn Elementary and other schools almost every single day, but she has not received a job offer yet.

I've visited all of these churches on one occasion or another for maybe VBS, baptisms, revivals, etc., and yes, many Straughn "people" go to the churches you listed, but they also go to Mt. Pisgah, Greentree Fellowship, Mt. Zion, Zion Hill, Mt. Gilead, Babbie Baptist, First Baptist, and other churches in our area. We should just thank God that we have people who are working in the classroom/education settings with our children who actually go to church and strive to live as Christians.

I'm sorry you had a bad "impression". I just think as long as you are not directly effected or have any reason to slander Straughn School, you should keep your negative comments to yourself. Straughn is a great place to live & go to school, and the day that it becomes less than that, I assure you it will be obvious because we won't have to be building more classrooms to make room for all of the students who which to go to school there. We're constantly growing and word is we'll be a 4A school in athletics (because of the number of students enrolled) this time next year. Don't you think if Straughn was as bad as you were making it out to be that we wouldn't have gone from 2A to 3A and now possibly to 4A in only 7 years or so?

I stand behind my belief that Straughn School is currently the best place in Covington County to send your children to school.

Thank you so much, WAtidefan for your clarification. I can't seem to figure out bluecollarguy either. I think he's just unhappy with himself and wants to bring others down with him. Not happening here!

First of all, there is no "scholarship" for your grade Senior Year, and Homecoming Queen is often a surprise as well. Several years in a row, the Homecoming Queen was a surprise because the one selected had not even made the court in the years before. Homecoming Queen is voted on by the entire high school grades 9-12 not just by the senior class. Most often it is NOT a cheerleader, band member, class president, etc. as most would think.

As for "....the teachers purposely do not inform the students about GPA...." in our high school, the student's rank is listed on his/her report card, so students know where they rank in the class. It's not something that's kept secret. Why should it be? And what's this comment about "goodies" and Sitel? I don't understand that comment. For your information, scholarships aren't awarded based on who finishes first in the class. They are based on ACT scores.

You keep referring to Sitel in a negative way, so if you are working at Sitel and you are as unhappy as you sound, quit and hope you can find something else to do. Also, check and see just how many Sitel workers are Straughn graduates........quite a few of them because I can name a lot of them myself. With the economy and job market as it is, you and anyone else should thank God for a job at Sitel. You could be holding up a sign on the street corner saying, "Will work for food!"

It's obvious that bluecollarguy has no idea what he's talking about. Sounds like a jealously issue to me with both bluecollarguy and WAtidefan. I am a Straughn High School graduate and I also have a child that graduated there, but even I don't know what bluecollarguy is talking about when he said, "........they don't take to well to outsiders moving in to try to win any of their scholarships though". What scholarships? My child was Saluatorian, but I don't recall receiving a scholarship awarded by anyone from Straughn. Besides, with bluecollarguy's grammar and word choices, I'd be surprised if he got a scholarship from anywhere!

At least it shows the level of class that Straughn High School administrators, students, faculty, and supporters have to want to beautify their campus, but I don't understand all of this jealousy and animosity. For example, I went to watch the Andalusia vs Straughn football game and was appalled that the Andalusia High School administration, cheer sponsors, coaches, etc., would allow the distasteful signs made by the Andalusia High School cheerleaders that were hanging inside the stadium. It seems their time would have been more well spent painting the logo in the middle of the football field since there wasn't one! It is also ridiculous that the AHS cheerleaders had to stoop so low to try and pump up the football players before the game by putting rude signs in the football team's locker room and telling them that the SHS cheerleaders got in there some how and put up the signs. Come on! Why all this jealousy and animosity between schools? Why can't we just all be happy and proud for the accomplishments of ALL schools and students in our area?

We all live in the same area - a LOT of AHS students live in the Straughn community and vice versa - yes, even one of the truck shooters that was listed in the Star News this past week as a "Straughn teen".....he's actually a 2009 Andalusia High School graduate. Thanks, BigDog on your comment about it being a good school and community. If it weren't, we wouldn't have so many students being driven in from the Andalusia city limits and surrounding school districts & cities, that's for sure. However, it's obvious with comments like bluecollarguy made, "If you 'in' with the core, you 'in', but if you ain't, you up the river without a paddle" that he didn't go to Straughn! I take it by his tone and comments that he either wanted to go to school at Straughn (or went and was kicked out), wanted to work at Straughn (or worked for a little while and it didn't work out) or wanted send his kids to Straughn, but he must not have been "in with the core".

Congratulations, SHS on being a class act.

The comment above was to be posted on the story about the new gates at SHS. How in the world did it end up here? I typed it as a post to the SHS story. Never know!
